Life / Polish and Czechs [191]

Czechs & Poles?

A Pole told me that in his opinion, Poles generally liked the Czechs but that Czechs generally didn't particularly like Poles that much.

Poor, religious and miserable - his words, not mine.

Ah - like receivers/givers?

Trainers can be pretty big though.

Socks - well, malleable anyway.

Inapropriate loudness

No. Don't accept it. No man can possibly complain about this maleness affirming phenomenon!

Ha ha - no English lessons required for you then Marynka!

(Which, incidentally, according to conventional slang= spanking! - not that I meant that)

Yes, it's the thread Natasa, Southern and all the other pervs have only dreamt about ; )

Is there something that is "Polish" ?

Eg. according to traditional Anglo slang, German = watersports, Greek = anal, French = oral etc etc

Who of the well travelled on PF can attribute certain practices to Poland?

Life / St Patrick's day in Poland [272]

Well as it is officially St Patrick's day here and now - Sláinte !

(Jesus it's all BS anyway - I mean , as I type, I'm drinking American beer and will be going out of my way to avoid all festivities later today)

Same thing then really Pennboy! LOL

And no I won't be an ass about it, but please for the love of god, don't say Patty to any Irish person. I can't explain it but it just sounds awful - Patrick or Paddy. No other variation is tolerated!

I dunno - it's probably like saying "Indo day" or something - but maybe you say that?!

Very different - in that there is no official independence day as such.

Or maybe you meant "our" instead of "your" ?

For adults, basically, it's a party day, and that's it. For kids and people who have them it's parades and stuff but with only a very vague national aspect to it. In fact to be honest, in some cases, the curiosity factor of US marching bands coming over to participate (which they do, often, in a cheerleader type of way) is a big novelty and a little bemusing, but welcome.

Any true meaning or whatever is out the window in practice.

General question - what are "Irish pubs" like in Poland?

Only ever been to one (called, funny enough, Irish pub) and it was, well...a pub basically. And that's it. Dark wood, leather, that kind of thing - just an old style pub but nothing identifiable about it.

But maybe this idea of a pub is quite different from the Polish norm?

In fact, I think I remember hearing that pubs as the Irish would know them are a relatively new concept in Poland in that traditionally they were very rough and ready "drinking houses" basically - old men and alcos - and that people tended to drink in hotels - true?

whatcould I say that one could n't find on wikipedia etc?

If you were Irish you would think of something. I know I can. I'm sure others here can too.

Irish people say 'slag' for insult and 'eejit' for a stupid person. The GAA club is the hub of local communities and rural life especially relvolves around it. is that good enough?

No it's not. And it's not exactly accurate either.

Labhraim giota beag Ghaelige ach ba mhaith liom fheabhus a cúr ar mo chuid Ghaeilige sa todchaí.

Did you miss this bit?

Not some poorly translated googled Gaeilge - anyone can do that

Most Irish don't even drink beer

Oh you think so?

Go away, you are a joke.

By the way, I think 4th time now at this stage:

why don't you tell me something that only an Irish person would really understand?

Difficult to say - it's all relative. Compared with US beer it's almost certainly a bit bitter, earthy tasting - although nowhere near Guinness-like. Slightly fruity even? Very hard to describe!

Easily quaffable rather than sippable if you know what I mean.

Ah **** just try it ; )

wacky leftist welfare system.

Hmmm.

Where have I heard this before recently? Ah yes, polesarerussian wasn't it?

Any other nom de plumes saddo?

I've said it before but I can guarantee you this guy is not even Irish. Not even a wannabe American plastic paddy. There are far too many giveaway signs in his posts. English is not his first language.

Either way, whatever the nationality of this lunatic he most certainly does not represent the views of the average Irish person.

To put things in perspective, Sinn Féin recieved less than 10% of the national vote at the recent election, which incidentally was their best result ever, by far. They are formerly the political wing of the provisional IRA who have been on ceasefire since 1997 and announced a complete end to their campaign and decommissioned weapons 6 years ago. Any other renegade so called "republicans" that troll-boy has gone on about in other posts receive almost zero support and are condemned by all other republicans - including Sinn Féin themselves.

I've asked you before but I'll ask again - prove to me that you are Irish - why don't you tell me something that only an Irish person would really understand?

Not some poorly translated googled Gaeilge - anyone can do that.

Go on then, I'm waiting....

Ireland4ever is a troll and is not even Irish - ignore him.

Polskimoc is also a troll and unfortunately comes across as a cliché dumb polack immigrant frantically looking to finger point.

the most recent iq test

LOL - the one, the only one - WTF are you even talking about?

Results of dozens of IQ tests surface and resurface all the time and on this very site. Results are always different. You'll need to do better than that.

Since you love your statistics so much, maybe then you can explain why Ireland has almost 10 times as many nobel prize winners per capita than Poland?

Ha ha - it's very English that 'bless' thing : )

And why are people talking about hairy armpits as if it was something bad ??

Yiz are all indoctrinated I tell ya!

Au naturel is intoxicating!

More on topic, I don't think I've heard any poles say anything negative about France.

UK, Ireland / Does everyone know about countess Markiewicz? Polish connection. [16]

Any idea if it's true about the Irish Citizen Army's anthem being based on a Polish song?

Wow - hadn't heard about that.

If it's true, might make for more of a Polish link than the existing tenuous one!

and get to wound up

Easily done ; )

UK, Ireland / Does everyone know about countess Markiewicz? Polish connection. [16]

Quite common in fact.

Especially during that period. Quite a few important figures in Irish nationalism were protestants e.g. Parnell, Wolfe Tone, Isaac Butt, Robert Emmett.

In the republic today, a few protestant nationalists but not at all common. Then again, relatively few protestants in the republic anyway.

Mansergh is a prominent and influential figure in the Fianna Fáil party for example, and a COI member.

Maybe it's all old news to many Poles but haven't noticed it mentioned on this site anyway. It's more of an Anglo-Irish story than a Polish one of course - but with the obvious Polish connection.

Interesting and unusual chapter in history.

Life / Vasectomy in Poland is illegal? Why? [123]

it must have been at least thirty years ago

I wasn't even "of age" then - you must be knockin' on a bit then Jonni! (sub-topic related feeble pun intended)

Ah OK. A bit different but I get your point. But vasectomy wasn't viewed the same way as the pill or condoms etc as far as I know.

Anyway, that particular anachronism was addressed over 30 years ago Jonni !

Ireland

Er nope?!

Two friends have had it done. A now deceased and well known DJ had it done years ago and spoke about it.

No issues in Ireland - maybe the church has voiced disapproval, I dunno - nobody I know would pay attention anyway. Certainly legally, medically, it's routine and has been for years.
