There is no way that the priest in question should call himself a Christian...

Absolutely - and the same with PiS as a whole, trumpeting Christianity but in fact practising a faith much darker and older....

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

The 4th of June is a Saturday, and gatherings are planned all over Poland to celebrate the restoration of democracy to Poland

Basically another attempt to stifle lawful opposition...

Food / Is brain-damaging vegan fad growing in Poland? [176]

True. But there's something nice about humans: we have moral/ethics.

This sums it up really. Whether you like meat or you don't, animals are raised in appalling conditions to be slaughtered.

Looks like a handful of PiS nutters:

More than 1,000 Polish nationalists and followers of right-wing Catholic groups gathered in Warsaw at midday Saturday to demonstrate against perceived EU interference in national politics.

were upstaged by the moderate majority:

Counter rallies by backers of the 28-member bloc attracted around 240,000 people, according to the city administration, in what has been the largest public demonstration since Poland's national-conservative government came to power.

And the Polish pro-democracy movement goes from strength to strength...

That must rank as one of the stupidest comments ever written on this forum

Spot on. Never, in all the decades I've spent in Poland (coincidentally ones which IS has spent outside Poland) have I heard anybody, eve suggest any such thing.

The same kind of sources that write about the EU having plans to mandate the micro-chipping of all newborn babies?

Pretty well. Since there's nothing good to be said by the regime and their seedy supporters, they can only come out with Wii like that

Not sure what you mean by "trendy PC causes to promote".

Same here. I suspect he means "anything not conspicuously old-fashioned".

Meat is basically dead animals, reared (especially in Poland) in a cruel way and slaughtered so a particular species can steal the protein and carbohydrate from their corpses. It tastes nice, but we don't really need to eat it much or at all.

Clearly you can't be talking about the 18% regime: none of their changes have been good

The second worst regime for decades - the worst being when they were briefly in office before

It essentially means that PiS have to create a new parallel state

This is in every way their plan. The treasonous 'Fourth Republic' project...

a very worrying growth in the deficit and govt expenses at a record high as they hand out their electoral pork and also pay off the sacked officials who did nothing wrong apart from not being members of PiS

Absolutely agreed - it was the same last time.

The government are economic illiterates and within a few months people will care much more about that than they do about abortion, the president's love life or poisoned horses

Again, spot on. We should be very careful though - PiS have made very clear their contempt for democracy and we can expect them to use all sorts of dirty tricks too stay in power. Last time they were booted out mid-term by the voters; they hate elections and would do anything in their power to stay in office without them.

Maciarewicz is an old school leftist

An appalling individual. Quite scary that he holds public office.

very sensible young people and have nothing to do with fascism

So the hitler salutes are just stretching their arms...

a demonstration of how hard it is to get an accurate view of Poland from the other side of the atlantic.

Very true.

Law / Uber in Poland - illegal [28]

Yes, that's true. Basically the tax-office were catching people who didn't, so they had to rework the whole thing and Uber have to see and check all the docs.

Law / Uber in Poland - illegal [28]

Using Uber is ok as long as you do not have an accident.

It was like that here until a while ago - now they have to have the correct insurance.

Yes it is, though in character and behaviour, they're far closer to the NDSAP at the start of their regime. Sooner or later there'll be some parallel to the Enabling Act of 1933 and there's already serious talk by Macierewicz about a jackbooted, flag waving and saluting uniformed group...

Real Estate / Can foreigners buy land, house, or apartment in Poland? [60]

If a citizen of Belarus wants to buy an apartment here are there any legal steps required other than the normal ones ?

No, there are no rules about buying an apartment or house. Only farmland and forestry. There were some rules about buying a second home, however as far as I know this rule was relaxed some time ago.

News / The Leningrad Amber room finally found in Poland? [11]

A mosaic and a chest showed up

Interesting to trace (as historians would want to) the journey of those pieces. If this bunker thing isn't just a museum's attempt to boost their visitor numbers we may soon know more.

and were returned to Russia in 2000:

That bit's a shame, given the Russians' reluctance to return plundered artifacts.

News / The Leningrad Amber room finally found in Poland? [11]

Possibly - towards the end of the war it might have been within range.

One of the things that the "oo they didn't help us at all in 1939" brigade in Poland conveniently forget is that it was only much later in the war that there were the right sort of planes with sufficient range to reach here. In the 1930s passenger planes from Croydon Aerodrome to Pole Mokotowskie in Warsaw (yes, there was a scheduled service) had to refuel on the way.

News / The Leningrad Amber room finally found in Poland? [11]

Really? That's new to me. Were they soldiers' souvenirs? I know some of the American took souvenirs and one dirt-poor redneck became unaccountably rich after going for a swim in the lake at Garmisch-Partenkirchen; all it took was a few blocks of gold, part of the 3% or whatever that was never traced - there's quite a good book about it.

Until recently the most plausible theory about the Amber room is that it didn't survive the Soviet bombardment of Konigsberg, where it was stored.

And if it did, it would basically just be a curiosity now; most of the pieces were as dry as bone and falling off the wall even before they were removed from the Catherine Palace.

It could be another false alarm like the 'gold train' or a stunt by PiS to line someone's pocket but still interesting. It would be great if they find it although since Amber dries out with time it would probably be in very poor condition.

- A museum in Poland believes it has discovered the legendary Amber Room
- The room, worth £250million, was looted when the Nazis invaded Russia
- Exactly where it was taken still remains one of the war's greatest mysteries
- Museum officials claim to have used geo-radar to uncover a hidden bunker
- They believe it could contain Amber Room treasure and will start digging

But now, bosses at the Mamerki museum near Wegorzewo, north east Poland, say it may have been hidden behind a false wall that was sealed shut inside an old wartime bunker - after finding an unknown room measuring 6.5ft wide and 10ft long using geo-radar.

Merged: How postwar Warsaw was rebuilt using 18th century paintings

A good article in The Guardian's "Stories of Cities" series:

When Warsaw's Old Town was destroyed by Hitler's troops in the second world war, the nation mobilised to rebuild the city with the rubble of its own destruction - and the work of Italian painter Bernardo Bellotto
