Genealogy / Just found out I'm Polish! [45]

I come with theories

look mr g, I live in the us, so i already have done footwork on four of my polish grand
parents documents.. I pretty much know which way to research in my own country.

Im not being hostile, I get sick and tired of seeing people go into a thread that someone
created and type stupid crap when they are asking serious questions.

your response to me appeared sarcastic, and my advice was sound for her to go try
and get records.. on the 1900 cencus it asked age at last marriage. so the age should
be there, she can go to the actual town /city and find the records via the history center

I also would need to know what town in texas, online they have the records of alot of
marriages, so she might be able to find it that way, but she left little information for us to
go on to even think about helping.. so again without that, she is on her own.

what do you have?

oh yeah, a settler came from england/america and settled in poland.. hmmmmmmmmm

that helps.

goodnight.

Genealogy / Just found out I'm Polish! [45]

Maaaybe there was some settlers in Poland from England/America,

are you trying to help this person or trying to be annoying?

I gave her some tips, do you have suggestions or just statements?

because we all know that there were settlers from all parts of the globe, she needs
help finding the name, the only way to do that is dig further in family docs and local
churches and history centers.

if people dont have anything good to say when someone does a genealogy request
then stay the hell out of the thread.. its hard enough for people to do the research then
they get stupid answers from dorks who are just trying to be funny and really they are
idiots.

people take this seriously, so if you dont like it, dont fricken respond to the thread.

have you talked to the Deceased uncles family and asked them if they have any old
documents you might be able to view or make copies of?

if he was the one who knew, then there has to be documents that show the original
last name.

another way to check is that you already located the 1900 cencus which tells you where
your great grandpa lived at the time.. on that it should show age when he was married
or your great grandma too.. once you know the age you can get a date,, go to that local
church in the town that he lived and check thru the records for that year in that city/town
and hopefully find out his original spelling if he didnt change it before he was married.

which I cant see someone doing that, I think he changed it after he was married, but
I could be wrong.. usually during that time, polish men looked for wifes ( polish women)

hope this helps. without the polish name spelling I am afraid we are limited on how we
can help. wilson is very common name.

USA, Canada / Polack/American Polonia/Plastic Pole "culture" [568]

Why just Poles in America? What about Plastic Mexicans? Plastic Irish? Plastic Italians? Plastic.....well..

hes a plastic brit living in a plastic house , with a plastic dog and a plastic doll.. oh, I wasnt
supposed to say that... sorry del, didnt mean to give out your secret that you have a blow
up plastic living with you.. and you named her barbie. :)

What about my wife that spent her whole life in Poland but is now moving to America with me in January? Will she then become "Plastic"?

he thinks that if you dont stay and pay your taxes then you are no longer polish, and
are plastic... he thinks you should stay and fight for poland , even though no wars
are going on currently there.. yeah, I just ignore it anymore.. kinda stupid and old now
and not really worth discussing.

oh and when your wife gets here, she isnt allowed to wear clothes that have polish symbols
or eat keilbasa or anything that is polish cause she no longer pays taxes..

I dont think he realizes how stupid he sounds when he says this, but hey, if the shoe fits.

yep yep.. anyways.

Genealogy / Americans of Polish descent. How many of us are on Polish forums? [216]

I was going on just a couple of letters, 2 pieces of paper that provides a typed address for 2 different people with the same last name that matched with the letters and an individual who married my great grandmothers'

MY mom gave me two documents with my grandpas name on them and grandma on one
of their marriage cert and naturalization papers.

then later she gave me my other grandmas green card. she was still citizen of poland.
she even had to do the paper work during the war again cause of all the immigrants
and had to prove how long she had already been here. get letters from her friends.

Do you have any old pics?

I dont have old pics of when they came, if they took any, they got lost. I do have
one of my grandfathers old home.

my family came and settled in detroit. but they did come thru ellis.

cheehaw, Nice pics, all polish?

poor Polish peasant ancestors

thats what I hear alot of people say, but back in the day if you owned more then
one cow, you were rich.. my uncle told me that his mothers parents owned alot
of cows.. not just two, so they were like modern day ranchers with a cattle farm.
but of course, she up and came to America cause most of her cousins came and
quite a few stayed.

America between 1853 and 1888, so I am American through and through but I enjoy learning about my roots and especially studying history.

you still have some polish in you, and family history is very interesting, same as any
other history, like American history, its amazing to find things about your family that
you never knew happened, wars the participated in, uprisings, military, owing large farms
and lots of land, family still living in same town and if your lucky, like me, you will still have
current cousins living there.. We have always been in contact with.

we are a ocean apart, but they still think of our family as polish.. even though we are
American citizens :)

You don't have to be a genius to work out that a dumb Polack who can't speak Polish isn't actually Polish at all.

lol its apparent that your not a genius cause you cant even work out what you just said.

* Duh, my name is del and I live in Poland and pay taxes and my real name is BEN DOVER..

lol..

to make your orchard. ;)

Food / Taste of food in Poland vs other countries [186]

Come to Poland :)

:) I heard from few relatives that the food in poland was full of more fat, which I would
agree , that might be why the taste is different compared to here. some places still cook
things naturally.

I think its just what we get used to, because my mom would cook some really good food
and I loved it, and then someone elses mom would cook and I would not like how she
prepared her food.

I dont like the original way to make cabbage, I like how my mom taught me, so its all
in what we get used to, and you grew up on a certain taste. back home is always the
best.

well, maybe some growth hormone taste;)

they went organic, now food that is without chemicals and hormones cost you a mint

The shelves are changing, Which is good, we dont need more crap in the food. :)

but overall I was hoping to be more related to ancient Greeks or something.

if you can get that far back I am sure we all are.

Thanks for sharing.

It seems many of my ancestors lived in Poland or around it for 100s, if not over 1000 years.

well, I know my mothers side they did live in the same area for 200 years.
I havent persued it further due to my work schedule. but I do plan to pick back up and
continue getting records. least till the trail stops again.

Therefore the mean white dog's grand-, grand-, grand-, granddaughter must now pay higher interest rates, have better cat-highschool grades to be admitted to the same college, have better cat-school grades to be hired at many government cat jobs, etc., etc.

I Understand what your saying, but thats a whole different thread

that's a compliment,

Thank you :)

if the black cat got a cheaper interest on his cat house loan because that cat's grand-, grand-, grand-, grandfather was mistreated by the mean white dog.

lol,, well, it wouldnt be fair, but we are talking about people with duplicate names
and lets face it, there are people who share the same name and are Black, white, hispanic
etc. common names like smith, and jones and even people with the names WHITE AND
BLACK as their last name are common so if they took the cencus, it was just to show
where the population was in terms of integration probably.

Anyways, I think a thread should be created about that with Polish Americans.
unless Pol3 already did.. I think he did.. lol

I'm against all discrimination.

Im not for it either, like I said , genealogical records are for finding relatives, and
not discrimination, my dog and cat are black and white, I have to decribe them when
I am speaking of them, what kind , color is all around you. your house a brick or
wood? that doesnt mean your discriminating against it just because you called it
a brick home.

I am white, that is a fact, so would I get upset.. no, now if you say, your a stupid person
because your black or white, then, thats discrimination.. or that you wont give a job to
a person because of their color. yeah, thats discrimination, or that you say, well , your
clothes are ripped and you look terrible you poor son of a immigrant.

my house is cream color, my dog black and white, my parents listed in the cencus as
white Americans.. does it affect anything now?no, did it back then, yes, it did, but thats over
with. we all share the same buildings, same bathrooms and same drinking fountains.
and no one makes anyone go to the back of the bus.. cause if they did, I would have
something to say about it,, or maybe I wouldnt say it, i would just change the color of their
eye..and lip.

anyways, back to the topic of Polish amies, who dont always get easily offended, we
just want to be left alone. everyone deserves a chance to learn, and if thats a crime
then I am guilty as hell.

:)

America has a hell of a lot to be proud of

I agree, thank you, but its not about that for some of us.

Maybe we are misunderstanding, maybe you are thinking of the way everything
in America is commercialized?

I can agree on this.

what do you still know and still celebrate that was part of your familys traditions?

Thanks sky, interesting. so maybe swedish and polish arent that far off in traditions
someone mentioned polish are like the italians, I have not seen this, I know they
( good percentage) are Catholic.

I wish the census never even asked the race question

Well , from genealogy standpoint, its good that they did, because although
Slavery was a huge part of American history, some of the slaves that were freed
ended up taking on the names of their previous owners and so you had duplicate
names of two guys, so if you are looking for someone , you know that your ancestor
was white, and it doesnt apply to my family, but some immigrants were early settlers
And came early and to get accurate information you have to follow the paper trail.

Its not easy trail either.

Why did your parents not teach you Polish?

I dont know, I never asked, but as a child, I was embarassed because kids called us
dumb polacks, my father and mother both went to catholic schools, strict learning, strict
religious beliefs..

when I found my dads report card at the same public school he went to ( after catholic)
I seen something that bothered me alot.

they werent rich, they managed, but they graded the kids on appearance.. how
screwed up was it back then?

so I am sure it had to do with how he was treated, and my mom, people fit in if your
not different.

Genealogy / Americans of Polish descent. How many of us are on Polish forums? [216]

I find the subject of cultural identity interesting, good thread Patrycja19.
Unfortunately I have more questions than opinions ;p

Thank you, the only way to know is to search.. some of us lost our grandparents young
some never had the chance to know them, and my parents spoke polish, but all of us
kids didnt know what they were saying,, of course it was at Christmas and Easter and
anytime they just didnt want us to know what they were saying..

when your a kid, you dont know any better. I dont blame them, maybe at some point
they knew it was something they shouldnt do because kids are mean ( sorta like del)
telling you how to be and not how to be. thinking they are better then everyone else.

I remember going to school, I was in 1st grade, and they called out your name in class
for attendence and soon as they say your longggggggggggg last name with silent
letters that end with a ski, they would laugh.

couldnt shrink in my chair, so I just sat there thinking of what /why kids are making fun
of my last name.. doesnt anyone else have one too??

whats so funny? but it wasnt my way of saying my last name, the teacher multiated
it so bad it sounded horrible.. and they ask you, how do you say your last name?
ok I am in 1st grade, I am just learning life, and your asking me how to say my last name?
and kids stare.. yeah, its really fun to be around jack asses.. people who think they are so
much better.

so it could be that , I cant ask my parents, both are deceased, all the questions i still have
I cant get answers to , even though I miss the heck out of both of them, and think often
of them and how I wish I was a kid again so I could ask those questions.

with new resourses and updated sites like Family Search ''searching for origins'' is bigger than ever. there must be millions of people in the USA looking for their European roots.

yes there is, its a very large business now. its advertised on TV and they have a show now
about family roots. alot of famous people are getting more involved.. pretty sure they
are just selling the whole idea, but hey everyone has ancestors.. :)

How many of you would consider moving to Poland for good?

I would.. I have a great family that still lives in poland and I know they would help out
and get me on my feet if needed.. thats how familys roll..
and I could get citizenship just like that .. and I know my family would help me with that
too.. they love me like I love them.. no matter how far away we are from each other.

If you have to choose, are you American or Polish?

right now I am American of polish decent. I have American citizenship because I was
born here,, same as in every country. but my Ancestry is Polish , just like yours is
supposed to be scottish.

Typical Plastic Polonia response

awwwwww did I strike a cord ?? cause you said your dont want to be a old man
teaching? whhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa go change your diaper..

Anyway, if you had actually read the thread, you'd know that I was talking about teaching professionally. Nothing to do with sitting on "Jaja's" knee listening to boring stories about how he ran away from Poland in 1919 because he was such a patriot.

mine neither, I didnt get that chance to sit on their knee, they all died minus one before
I was even thought of.

and they all came long before 1919... but what would you know , I guess you think
everyone who immigrated left when it was bad.. no one left to make a better life
like you did when you left your wonderful home to move to poland right..

yeah, one track mind you have.. lol.. what a good guy you are. lol not.
who cares anyway.. your claim to be holy holds no merit with me.

what really cracks me up is that people in general have to pay taxes in every country
they live. you use this as your excuse.. pathetic your not polish, your a citizen who is
a wannabe.. unfortunately you will never be.. but you can dreammmmmmmmmmm
dream of how you want a jaja like all of ours.. but never will have one, cause your just
a skirt with a bagpipe trying to pretend you are polish.. and guess what?

all the vodka in the world wont help you.. ha ha ha.. lol
again, I say, what a waste..
