Law / My very old PASZPORT KONSULARNY has a pesel number. [8]

not a pesel number

A pesel number begins with your birthday.... last two numbers of the year you were born, the month then the day and then 5 more numbers.

So a person born on July 17 1964 would have a pesel that begins 640717.....

News / Poland hopes to attract hard-working, trouble-free immigarnts - Ukrainian, Belarusians and Vietnamese [139]

I didn't know that many people claimed it in PL

If they don't try to claim when they first encounter border guards then they get pushed back past the border like any other shmuck that tries crossing illegally, tha'ts my understanding.

acting discreetly with other leaders in mainland Europe

My thoughts exactly.... especially Germany where Merkel era migration has been and continues to be an unmitigated rolling social and economic disaster with no end in sight...

Weird that no one is commenting on Tusk wanting to 'temporarily' and 'territorially' suspend the right to asylum... presumably to counter the russian/belarusian slavers (aka human traffickers) that try to dump them in Poland (and the Baltics and Finland).

notesfrompoland.com/2024/10/12/poland-to-suspend-asylum-rights-as-part-of-tougher-migration-policy-to-regain-control-of-borders/

It's especially significant since Tusk is a well-known EU insider.

Thoughts?

News / Polish vodka as a mean of protest [49]

If you're a teetotaller, you might get a couple of years

More like months... most very old people with a good quality of life regularly have small amounts of alcohol (I remember a news story about a lady in her 90s who was mentally alert and had a small glass of schnaps every evening.

Life is a series of tradeoffs and life is full of double edged swords and alcohol is one of them. Like I said, too little is better than too much (many teetotalers fear addiction and they should probably stay way) but consumed in moderation it probably brings more health benefits than danger.

News / Polish vodka as a mean of protest [49]

The French who drink wine with meals live long as well.

There are some meals that I can't imagine without wine.... duck, rabbit, goose, my combination porkolt/gulyas among them. The wine and food complement and improve each other for a more enjoyable experience.

While the rule for alcohol is 'too little is better than too much', in moderation it makes life nicer and probably has health benefits.

News / Polish vodka as a mean of protest [49]

Because it's fun.

The data suggest that alcohol, in small doses, has some beneficial effects (in terms of gut biome, blood quality etc). Unfortunately it's very easy to overdo it and consume it in quantities that nullify the benefits....

News / Up to 80 Polish fighters killed in Ukraine [63]

Stalin was just as brutal as Hitler.

And Poland received some kind of recognition and restitution from Germany (whether it was enough is another matter).

But Polish people were forced to lie about russia's involvement after WWII... lie about Katyń, lie about the Soviet invasion, lie about russian non-participation in the Warsaw Uprising, lie after lie after lie were maintained in public.

It's very natural that many harbored more negative reactions to russia (in it's ZSSR skinsuit) than to Germany.

News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [1440]

i assume that all democratic parties are against this and against the pathologies associated with it.

you could have fooled me... cause the impression i have is that all the mainstream parties are simply trying to ignore the problem and/or call anyone who notices the proble a bigot or nazi...

meanwhile....

what are any mainsteam parties suggesting?

anti-immigrant and pro-russian party.

anti-immigrant or anti horrible, dysfunctional migration policy?

pro-russian or funded by russia because it sees an opportunity?

there are certainly "experts" on pf who love such political parties

i wonder if this might help explain.... (nb that's one month that's no over yet).

Polonia / Which country is better SPAIN or POLAND [118]

I'd like an apartment in Malaga

Malaga's lovely but so hoooot, I've been places that are hotter in temperature but nowhere that _felt_ so subjectively hot..... parrots on the beach are nice. People are nice but the accent takes getting used to... I'd like to remind them of the existence of the consonants s and d (and sometimes l and/or r) makes Spanish a lot easier to understand.

I've only been to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in the Canaries but strongly prefer Fuerteventura, the locals are just a lot nicer. A Polish acquaintance who'd worked on both islands said she had the same idea... Lanzarote people were kind of closed and weird (and her mainland Spanish boyfriend agreed).

My favorite parts of Spain are probably those with connections to Catalan culture (not the full independiste model) but Valencia or Mallorca are great. I'd love to visit Mallorca again but it's become a symbol of over-tourism and so I'd feel guilty.....

News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [1440]

BSW, a party that did not exist a year ago. In fact, nothing is known about this party except that it does not want to help Ukraine, i.e. it is pro-russian.

More German political failure! Just what we needed!!!!!

Political scientists define political terms.

Then they are slacking.....

Franco ticked most of the boxes

I know someone who has studied the Spanish Civil War and Franco in depth (using Spanish sources of which there are far more than English).

They say he wasn't especially fascistic. He was a traditionalist strongman and hopeless on economics (autarky... it never works) but he didn't have the fascist... je ne sai quoi... he wasn't about creating an iron future as much as trying to recreate an imagined Spain that never existed....

I'd say if there's a non-circular definition of fascism it's related to a certain kind of naturalistic worldview in which there are predators and prey and the strong devour the weak. Most everything else comes out of that.

AfD (as much as I despise them) dont' seem fascistic... and they are the _only_ part in line with majority citizen opinion on migration. Take that away and they have nothing but the current German system is too dysfunctional for that.
