News / Will Chinese soldiers be stationed in Poland and Europe in 10 years? [52]

They'll take over east Asia first.

I dunno... a recent Chinese internet trend is people pointing out that formerly crowded place are now empty...

No one seriously believes the official population statistic of 1.4 billion... IIRC two separate countries put demographic experts on the job to figure out the real population and they both, independently, came up somewhere between 800 million and 1 billion (probably closer to the former).

The economy is complete crap since stupid communists creating a stupid housing oversupply that has gobbled up savings and they have a terrible age distribution (thanks to stupid communist 1 child policy0.

Almost every day people are setting fire to factories because they're not getting paid. and 'ruin the nation' (sabotage) is a new movement.

I'm sure the PRC has huge ambitions and would like to dominate East Asia and the Pacific (including NZ and australia) but it's not clear how much they can actually do given realities on the ground.

History / Why Poland is not Russia [260]

The official word for diarrhea is "biegunka"

two colloquial expressions in English (at least the US, can't speak for other places)

the sh+ts, the runs (I think it has more to do with.... consistency.....) so the first time I heard biegunka I immediately understood it : )

Polonia / Polish bus crash in Croatia. Is there a fate? [202]

Greeks .... sewer of a country

Why you gotta hate like that? Greece has a terrible, terrible political culture but I very much like being there. The Aegean (Greek Islands/Turkish Coast) is one of my favorite spots on earth.

IIRC an absolute majority of modern Greeks are actually hellenized Albanians... which explains a lot....

Language / Polish vs English tongue twisters [45]

sześćset

Many/most people pronounce that szejset much/most of the time.

sześćdziesiąt

Again, szejsiąt is a frequent abbreviation....

Makes it a bit easier....

Food / What Polish foods do foreigners generally not take to? [139]

Always nicer with kasza than rice too.

My ultimate gołąbki (mix of different practices that I approve of).

Whole pickled cabbage leaves (romania).
Kasza rather than rice (where?)
Spicy paprika tomato sauce (Hungary or Romanian Hungarians)
Big dollop of sour cream on top (ditto).

I don't have the skills or time to make gołąbki myself but a closeby store has pretty good ones. I serve them with passata (paprika added) and sour cream on top.

Food / Polish dishes with foreign origin in the name [99]

the dominant drink in Turkey is... tea.

With the proviso that 'tea' includes lots of powdered fruit drinks that end up being served in the same kind of traditional tea glass with no handle...

gołąbki exist in their own way in many countries

gołąbki are a northern version of dolma, which can plainly be seen when you go north from Turkey and pickled cabbage replaces grape leaves (Romania) or sauerkraut is added to the cabbage rolls when they're baked (Hungary) to the blander Polish version with no strong acidic taste.

You can draw a similar route perhaps with Greek tzatziki through Bulgarian tarator to Polish mizeria or chłodnik (the version without beets).

I think choucrout and bigos are more independent creations that have some similarities.

Food / Polish cookbook - down to earth hearty Polish cuisine [33]

Are you thinking of devilled eggs?

Devilled eggs (in the US at least) don't use a sauce. The yolk is scraped out of hard boiled egg halves and then mixed with mustard and paprika (and/or other things) and then the mixture put back into the eggs. I used to love them but they're a lot of work, now I just smear some mustard (dijon is my favorite) on hardboiled eggs and sprinkle some paprika on top.....

History / Why Poland is not Russia [260]

The values are different indeed, shaped by different historical circumstances,

There's an old saying: Adversity doesn't shape character, adversity reveals character.

I think it's more accurate than not both at the individual and collective level.

History / Why Poland is not Russia [260]

ask why Russia is not Poland?

russian values =/= Polish values

russians accept anything and everything the government tells them (was there any real russian resistance to the Soviet system?) and Poles don't

russians think they exist to serve their government (which owes them nothing in return)

Poles think the government exists to serve them

most/all of the other differences come from that

Eggs in mustard sauce was allegedly popular in communist times

Not sure if I heard of that, but I like eggs in horseradish sauce. Weirdly I like horseradish in Poland but nowhere else... I'd always hated it before living in Poland and I don't like it in any other country but Polish horseradish, I like.
