News / Attacks against healthcare workers in Poland [142]

What's up behind the recent spate of attacks against healthcare workers, paramedics, nurses and doctors have all been physically attacked recently.... most notably an orthopedist was killed by a patient who blamed him for an infection...

A doctor in Poland has died after being stabbed by a 'patient with a grudge' who forced his way into the consultation room and attacked him with a sharp object.

News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [1440]

the ones being stuck with all the refugees

The truth comes out in spite of efforts to deny it. I remember all the articles talking about how smart Germany was for taking in the Class of 2015 and how they'd enrich Germany and lots of Germans talking about how this time they'd help them integrate.... and the results have been pretty much what I expected all along. A few random success stories against a larger background of failure and now they're being treated as hot potatoes - economic liabilities that get sloughed off on whatever sucker country will have them (still Germany by and large).

Some individuals are sucked into crime, usually due to exclusion, inequality. peer pressure, desperation and lack of hope

And some people choose crime.

Adversity doesn't create criminals.... character (or lack thereof) creates criminals.

naturally affected by the negative attitude that may have been created by the AfD

Did AfD create that or did lazy and crime prone talahons create it?

Constitutional Court that a ban can only apply to a party that is so strong that it may have a shot at realizing its' unconstitutional goals.

Does AfD distinguish between

a) those from EU countries who come to Germany to work?

b) those from outside the EU who come to work?

c) unemployable and undeportable talahons?

If so, then how?

A frustrating aspect of migration discourse in Poland is the complete inability of most politicians to distinguish between migrants based on their goals of migration so those trying to storm the Belarus border so they can get to Germany and suckle at the taxpayer's teat aren't distinguished from those coming to work in Poland.

They aren't migrants..

culture matters... and European countries have not done a good job of assimilating the children of migrants.

migration will only increase

Maybe a bunch of Europeans can migrate to select African countries?

Something I've never seen.

Lucky you.... meanwhile....

It's not an either/or.

I think it is...

either you don't mind migrants (and/or their descendants) fighting on the streets of European cities with machetes

or you do mind migrants (and/or their descendants) fighting on the streets of European cities with machetes.

I'm in the latter camp. I don't want migrants (and/or their descendants) fighting on the streets of European cities with machetes (part of my general stance against anyone fighting on the streets with machetes but the case of Europe it's pretty close to exclusively a pastime followed by migrants and/or their descendants).

But... what do I know?

I guess only the worst Germans possible could object to machete fights on their streets....

In other news.... is it a policy failure that this guy wasn't deported _before_ he drove into a crowd?

Maybe someone can help.... What are AfD positions on:

retirement (retirment age for men and women)?

energy, specifically nuclear energy?

labor migration from other EU countries?

religious alternatives to civil courts?

relations with russia and Ukraine?

taxes?

public goods (endangered because of reckless German decisions about energy and migration)?

separation of religious vs secular authorities?

let's hope and pray the AfD
gets its wings clipped

It's the only party aligned with citizen concerns about migration.

Again.... how many unemployable talahons can Germany support?

At present... once an unemployable talahon crosses the German border he can never be removed (in practical terms at least).

They don't assimilate they don't work and they keep coming.

How is that sustainable?

eing outspoken against the many problems the german society has with many muslim immigrants is one of them!

Germany's migration policy is a rolling disaster that just gets worse and there's no will in the German establishment to recognize that (much less deal with it).

How many unemployable talahons and their families can Germany support?

On the other hand, I want all German parties to be _rigorously_ investigated for russian ties (SPD and AfD first among them).

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation - part 2 [816]

So English

Location is everything with English.... In the US 'dark horse' pretty much only refers to someone in a competitive event (election or sports) who could do better than anyone expects or who did better than anyone expected...

In the UK (England etc?) I've heard it used of someone revealing a skill or talent the other person hadn't realized they have... I don't think I've ever heard it used that way in US English.

Basically a politer MYOB.

In the US (ime, ymmv) it's only used by men to announced that they're going to take a p*ss, usually only said in bars or parties.

A variation on the original theme: Polish translation of an expression that has (slightly, somewhat) different meanings in the US and UK....

How is ciemny koń different in the two countries?

History / Poles should apologise to Ukrainians first [487]

raging nonsense of a thread can finally be closed

I disagree. While a certain poster had been ever more unhinged... the topic (historical relations between Poles and Ukrainians) is certainly relevant and reasonable people should be able to discuss why relations were often so bad (not entirely the fault of a single side).

It's emotional but reasonable people should be able to keep those in check.

Too bad reasonable people are like for medicine around here (to borrow an idiom)..

same in English

Not sure if you understand the name of the thread... originally about translating Polish sayings/idioms directly into English and seeing if people could identify them like to look for wind in a field and say what they meant...

A reverse riddle is to do the same in reverse... translate an English expression into Polish. Muszę rozmawiać z kimś o koniu is that. Interestingly, while doing research before posting... the expression has a different... range(?) of meanings in the US and UK....

'zapnij pas' to fasten your seatbelt instead of 'belt up'?

How else would you translate 'belt up'?

a horse a piece

Yes!

Is this the more literal meaning?

It's hard to tell because it's not clear if each gets a horse or each alternative requires a horse....

What about a really hard reverse one? This is a regionalism in the US that i heard the first time a year or so ago (from a different part of the country where I've never been) but I liked it and have used it incessantly ever since.... Super hard to translate into Polish so I'm going with two... one more literal (ish) one more meaning (ish) but which is which?

po koniu na każdego

koń za sztukę

What idiomatic meaning does Zapnij pas! have in Britain?

Over three days have passed and no one's gotten it, so I will reveal the answer here..

The British expression 'belt up' can mean either 'zapnij pas(y)' or 'shut up!' 'zamknij się!'....

Here's a rather gruesome public service announcement with the first meaning

youtube.com/watch?v=kcJVOu8WTAI

Here's a short clip from a very old British comedy (1959 or thereabouts)

I have no idea how current the expression is....

problems with migrants underbidding the native-born workforce

That is not a problem in Germany. The real problem is that a large percentage of the talahon population is essentially unemployable (and undeportable) a financial burden that grows from day to day.

And Europe is not the problem in terms of environment.... China and India are. Europe is about as non-polluting as possible.
