Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [401]

@Gmpski
About Wałkuski:
cejsh.icm.edu.pl/cejsh/element/bwmeta1.element.desklight-f7c27a8b-4b1b-4a97-bbdb-8c952df94582

Pełszynski or Pelszynski might be a Polonised version of German Pelz or derived from Pełczyska.

@Sylvio
Yeah, aren't we weird?
Since my BMI is just fine I must be twice as ugly.

You're welcome. I hope it helps.
As for the name, are you sure the name's written in the Latin alphabet?

Life / What is Poland's view on obesity? How healthy, fit are Poles? [166]

@Lindusapoland
180 kg or pounds?
Keep track of everything you eat - write it down. People often think they don't eat much but 2000 calories (or actually less for a woman your height-calculate your BMR) is not than much.

Have proper healthy and regular meals rather than snacks.
Don't eat fast food or ready meals. Cook.
Don't drink soda drinks.
Walk, cycle, be active.

News / Thousands of Polish women attend Czarny Piątek rally in Warsaw [780]

And in the meantime parents of the disabled have been fighting for better money for weeks now.
They didn't abort their babies. They sacrifice all their time to their children. But apparently their lives don't matter that much after they are born.

Perhaps Pałacha or Palach. Another alternative would be Palacz (cz in Polish is pronounced similarly to ch in English) or Pałacki if his handwriting is hard to decipher.

But all of these are surnames.

I agree. Lots go cycling, jogging or Nordic walking (especially people who are 50+).
There are lots of outdoor gyms and I don't know about the rest of Poland but where I am it's most popular among the elderly ;)

I guess snacking is a big problem. And processed food.

There are definitely more and more overweight people in Poland.
What's more, it seems the number of overweight children and teenagers is higher than ever.
Lots of Poles have thyroid problems (Czarnobyl? ) but a lot depends on the lifestyle.

@Goodboi
According to Stankiewicz it's derived from beczec-cry or bekac- burp ... but there was this Ukrainian/Soviet footballer and coach called Jozef Beca (originally Betsa) that was of Magyar/Hungarian origin.

Work / What Jobs are there in Poland for an Englishman besides teaching english? [70]

Look at the title of the thread. It's not about teaching esl. The guy was looking for a job. Your post was irrelevant.
Knowing some basic Polish words on his way to work will help. But he'll use English in his job.
Btw, teaching is not about showing off how much you know but about improving your learners' skills.
Especially if you keep making mistakes.

The first part of my post was addressed @Bromberg. He asked a question about Rozanska in #4646.

No relation between Rosenberg and Adinitz as far as I know.

News / Israel opposing potential new Polish law to criminalise term 'Polish death camps' [1538]

It seems Palestinians are killed on everyday basis - I believe far more Palestinian civilians have been killed by Israeli forces than Jews in pogroms in Poland. And we're not talking about hate driven mob ... orders must have been given.

As for re-opening the American embassy - these people have blood on their hands.

@Bromberg
It sounds Polish but it might have been used by Polish Jews (a Polonised version of Rosenberg, Rozenblum or something like that).
There was this infamous Stalinist prosecutor called Józef Różanski who was born Goldberg. At some point of his life he started using Różanski - his (Jewish) mother's maiden name. It's hard to say when her family started using the name.

As for your Różanska, she might have been Polish Catholic, a Jewish convert to Catholicism or a Catholic convert to Judaism. We can't really say it on the basis of her surname.

@Batman1943
I tried to answer your question in the other thread. Try contacting the convent or the state archives.

Love / Polish Wife - Common Bank Account in Poland [21]

@Jaskier
Interestingly enough, you're not accusing your husband of being a gold digger ;)

@Sandy48
Yes, it is a standard thing and makes a lot of things easier - like paying the bills, planning the budget, savings etc.

Sounds Russian to me. The beginning of the surname sounds like the Russian word for 'one', though it's misspelt. But that happens with surnames. You may try asking on a Russian forum, too.

The first name sounds Russian/Ruthenian, too.
There was a Russian minority in Poland before WW1 - in parts of Poland under the Russian occupation.
There were also Ruthenians.

Finally, it could be the Russian spelling of the Polish word odyniec - male wild boar. It was also used as a surname and a coat of arms.

Genealogy / Surnames Gall / Figura / Odrowaz [34]

Kowalczyk is an extremely popular surname in Poland.
As for Marusarz and Zakopane - Jan, Stanisław and Helena represented Poland in winter sports before the war. They were also couriers because of their excellent skiing skills. Helena was killed after being captured by Germans. You can read about them online.

It's hard to say if you're related.

There are over 5000 Reszkas in Poland according to moikrewni.pl. but only 36 Klosseks - six of them live in Katowice - there's even a bakery (piekarnia) run by a Klossek family in Katowice.

Love / What Do Polish Women Think Of French Men? [26]

That's what I remember from my childhood- short hair with a perm at a certain age but not anymore. Even back then, not all of them.

Seems like you never left communist Poland when women got their perm and podomka at 40.
As for the weight, it all depends on the lifestyle. There are lots of overweight children, teenagers and people in their twenties - like never before. In this respect Poland is like America and the UK. Although I have not yet seen such morbidly obese people as in the UK. Never have I heard of 600 lbs Pole either - unlike the US.

Life / The Art of Complaining by Polish people [47]

@johnny reb
It is psiakrew indeed. It's pronounced more or less as you put it. There's also psiakość and psiamać. And that's it. All of these are pretty euphemistic.

Your dad must have had a good laugh :)
