my nephew only learned basics of English in school (to be honest I never paid attention to what variety of English they taught him in elementary school) - most of his English skills come from watching TikTok videos though and interacting with people from abroad on some gaming servers - I think many young people now learn English this way after acquiring some basics in school and AFAIK most of the internet is the American variety of English

maybe this will sound rubbish or preposterous to you... but New York Times reported in 2023 or 2024 that some in Israeli intelligence knew about the planned Hamas action well in advance - the article said IIRC that the reports were ignored by higher officials - I somehow think that this was deliberately "ignored" so that Israel could have an excuse for their little Endlosung - I know this may sound outrageous to some but I think it is probable
