News / Unfulfilled promises by PiS [559]

16 no new Central Airport between Warsaw and Łódź

Probably it is not a bad thing after all. This is a pharaonic project for which the government will have no money in the future. The Germans are not capable to finish their big hub in Berlin, and despite much progress having been done in Poland recently to tarnish the infamous image of "polnische Wirtshaft", Germany is still a better organized country than Poland. And they carry on without the big hub in Berlin and can still manage.

It is unrealistic to assume that such pandemias as COVID-19 will never return. On the contrary, it is realistic to assume that they will return and on a larger scale. Perhaps not in a year or two, but they will. It was already obvious 10 or 15 years ago when these types of pandemia were breaking out on a local scale, but were succesfully quenched.

The air traffic is not likely to return to the levels observed in the times before COVID-19, so what should we need a pharaonic hub for? To baptize it "Lech Kaczyński Airport"?

But they started to dig that ditch across the Vistula Split, didn't they?

And they did cut down a lot of century-old forests in the Białowieża Forest, too

Work / Choice of Poland's OFE ( Open Pension Funds ) [30]

That is why I still collect the benefit

That was a brilliant answer coming from a self-conscious citizen of Poland who proudly refuses to buy the bullshit of PiS propaganda.

Well done!

Life / Izabela? - Advice with Polish name for a girl [36]

Iza is the most common short version of Izabela in Poland

It is. But I think 'Bela' was preferred in the 19th or early 20th century When you divide the name, you will have "Iza-bela", and they now prefer the first part as a shortned form, while more than a hundred years ago they chose the final part. Another thing is that the name wasn't popular among the so-called common people at that time.

Such preferences change over time. For example, I've watched a very interesting lecture of the archeologist Przemysław Urbańczyk on the times of Bolesław Chrobry recently, and the lecturer noticed, comparing the iconography on banknotes and coins, that the king was portrayed en face in the times of the PRL, whereas before the WW II and today he is portrayed in profile.

"the duck" was a way of referring to Lech Kaczyński.

One may assume there are two ducks in Polish politics: one is Donald Duck, the other is Kaczyński Duck (kaczka=duck)

If there was only one round neither one of us would probably dare to do that.

I would probably abstain. Now look how Duda has suddenly become kind to everyone. His gay patrols gone, he just thanks people for voting for him, but also for voting for his competitors. Smiles and kind greetings for those who want to listen, supporters or enemies alike. As my neighbour uded to say: :"Cukierek umaczany w truciźnie".

a guy who entered politics 6 months ago has almost double the votes

It means there is a multitude of people who are looking for a third option beyond the existing political duopoly. And Hołownia's good result also means that this third option isn't Konfederacja.

Trashkowshi passing 30 percent is worrying though

What worries you about him?

(So, the Wieczór Wyborczy is over, and recommend to everyone the Russian film "Anna Karenina" on TVP1 which has just started. If you turn the Polish sound off, you may follow the original track in Russian. Not sure if one can turn the English subtitles on, but certainly the Polish ones are available. A linguistic feast!)

anyone thought he could get anything done without any kind of party support....

Hołownia presented himself as a candidate of citizens (kandydat obywatelski). Poland's president is not like the US president. He has probably a little bit more practical power than the British Queen, so basically the president of Poland is the "guardian of the chandelier" at the Palace. So I think Hołownia could carry on well as a president.

I voted for Hołownia (by no means believing he would get to the next round) to show my distance to a party who so easily got rid of the long-term OFE program because it just wanted to fill up the current budget deficit.

Well you are certainly living up to your nick Ziem :)

You certainly do not live in Poland and don't "feel" the reality here, so I am happy to forgive you calling me Ziemodimwit :-).

If you asked one hundred people in whatever street of whatever town in Poland who Robert Biedroń was, you would possibly get 98 positive replies as to who he is. And this will be not because he runs for presidency in the coming election, but because he was the first openly gay mayor of a town in Poland.

But then, if you asked the very same people who Różański or Witkowski was, you would probably end up with one or two positive replies to that question at the maximum.

Witkowski is a such an insignificant candidate for presidency that I didn't even bother to open the Wiki link which Lenka provided.

As for Różański, the name only associates in my mind with some opressor of the Stalinist era, but I doubt it was him whom Delph had in mind. If so, I think that's too far away in time to be relevant for the current presidential election in Poland. Anyway, most people in Poland would not identify such a name in either case.

If you don't have this basic information

Thus, the above presumption of yours is highly inaccurate in reference to the word 'basic'.

As for General Rozanski, even Lech Kaczyński decorated him.

Who the hell is General Różański? I somehow missed it ...

should be removed from Polish politics or, like Piotrowicz, used as a tool to remove the other communist scum

You can't find any non-communists in PiS for removing the communist scam elsewhere, can you? If so, they're all a gang of post-comunists in PiS ...

I think they could sweep the political scene in Poland.

What party would that be?

Trzaskowski: 30.30%

Has Trzaskowski crossed the magic line of 30% now?

They will declare the state of emergency which will delay the elections till autumn or even further.

In September things will actually get worse for PiS. They need to fix the election as soon s possible. That's why they had insisted on an even earlier date with all election going postal on which project they illegally wasted about ZŁ30 million by premturely printing voting cards.

If they declared a state of emergency, the country would collapse

I concur with this. If they did it, then the egg - as JR says - would be dripping off JK's face for ever (like it is dripping off Lazarus' face right now)..

How about a place where the regime holds power?

I already told a story here about a small town in Lubelskie where two guys beat a bloke who stood at an election rally among Duda supporters calmly, but was holding up a plate which said "No for the Ballpen".

News / Presidential elections 2020 - your opinions about campaign, candidates [2222]

Whatever people might tell against Duda and PiS, I shall admit that democracy is still alive in Poland. Yesterday in Warsaw I was walking the Krakowskie Przedmieście Street down to the Royal Castle and was passing the Presidential Palace. On my way I spotted a guy seated just in front of the Palace and holding a plate which said 'Precz z faszyzmem" (Down with facism). Then, on the border of the pavement with the road there was an exibition of large photographs with texts showing PiS politicians which presented their corruptive "deeds" and how much money it costed the Polish taxpayer. I was sort of surprised at the rather great number of those deeds having been accumulated throughout the period when PiS have been in power.

All that in front of the Presidential Palace and no police or other force dismanting the exibition. Thank God we are not yet a Putin-style republic. I wonder if Konfederacja with Bosak as the main tenant of the Palace would have tolerated this kind of exhibition.

[On a side note, I wonder if such an exhibition were allowed in case of presenting the achievements or problems or whatever else concerning the LGBT people. That could be a real test for the Polish democracy!]

Trump won big here. He hit all his talking points

I've always said on this forum that Trump is a big player. He once went totally bankrupt and then recovered and that is always an extremely good lesson if you pass it successfully. Neither Duda nor JK nor Bosak would be able to achive this in my view. Neither Trzaskowski, to be honest, but at least he seems to be much less naive than Duda.

Dude, most Polish people living in Poland don't have interest in posting on an internet Forum in English

You've misread my post, darling.

I was not talking about Polish people living in Poland, but only of those handful of Polish people who post on the PF

the majority of people on the PF living in Poland, both the handful of native Poles as well as foreign expats in Poland

funny to read what other candidates say about Trzaskowski:

It only means that they've alredy begun to soil their pants even if it is still 4 days to the election.

they are bringing back all the communist evil that I hoped was gone in 1989.

This is particularly true when you watch the propagnda spilled out from the public television TVP. I would have never imagined that it came over the surface once again. Of course, the slogans and subjects promoted are different, but the techniques of manipulation is virtually the same. A source of eternal disgust for anyone who is capable of thinking on their own.

Of course, there are lot of peole who believe this kind of propoagand. There have always been people who need an "'authority' which explains to them the surrounding world in simple terms.

They cherish their dear illusions about Poland from old times and dream of keeping the things as they were.

They probably imagine that the level of bureaucracy and competence in Poland is as high as in the countries of the "rotten" West they actually live in at present, while in fact it is not. On the other hand, they despise certain values promoted in that rotten West, so they are quite happy that Poland under PiS rejects them. In this way they get the false image of Poland as an orderly organized country which is not true, at the same time not realizing that ideas and values of the democratic rotten West add enormously to the freedem and thus prosperity of the said West. In the end. The Polish expats abroad tend to find themselves in the trap of their own illusions.

It has always striked me that the majority of people on the PF living in Poland, both the handful of native Poles as well as foreign expats in Poland, have totally different opinions on what is going on in Poland than the majority of the delusional Poles posting from the "rotten" West.

Life / Izabela? - Advice with Polish name for a girl [36]

I think it`s called hormones. :)

A lot of politicians, including PiS politicians for whom the so-called Christian values are so dear, have "mistresses" on the side and need not to leave their wives. Kazio Marcinkiewicz could have also done that thus sparing everyone the trouble of reading about his turbulent union with Isabel.

a spelling mistake - it should be Belusia

Or simply Belcia as the father of Izabela Łęcka called his daughter in the "Lalka" novel (it is available in English trnsltion as an e-book "The Doll" on amazon.com). Also her caring aunt, hrabina Karolowa, did that as well. Just read this:

Have you read the entire text of "Lalka", Pawian?

sometimes Polish conservative values lead to suicidal disasters like partitions

That a was good point. The majority of conservative Catholic gentry (szlachta) did not want any reforms of king Poniatowski and his liberal circle. The gentry people in the country despised Warsaw at the time considering the city a seat of evil. And in the end they got what they deserved - a tsarist most conservative rule which wanted to wipe Catholic religion out of Poland and eradicate the Polish language from the Earth. Hahahaha.

Now the clowns of the PiS party woukld like follow in their steps. Forming fag patrols in every town and village is perhaps their preferred activity they would like to pursue in the times of the crisis. Hahahaha.

Marcinkiewicz i Isabel. To koniec?

Oh, that soap opera was really good. I've always wondered what made this otherwise reasonable PiS politician leave his wife and get into all this.

But I guess it's possible.

It is. One of the main characters in Bolesław Prus' novel "The Doll", Izabela Łęcka, was commonly referred to as 'Bela' in her family circle.

We need to educate them. I am doing my bit of work already. How about you?? :):)

I don't, because they are not prone to being educated. Did you hear of an incident in Ryki where one bloke came to an electoral meeting with Duda and calmly stood there among Duda's supporters holding up a plate which said "Nie dla długopisu". He so much infuriated two of the supporters that they beat him up in front of his teen daughter. He later commented that it was a "perfect" example of the famous pro-family policy pursued by Duda and PiS.

Travel / Fortune Tellers/ Astrologers in Warsaw [27]

I would have never expected you to go to one, by the way. Besides, 25 years is too long a period for a fortune-teller to tell a world-wide predictions. It is more likely they specialize in the life of a particular person (which possibly could include dying from a virus, but I doubt any fortune-teller would go that far as telling his customer the cause of his death).

Contrary to Ask Donna, many scietists predicted that there will be an outbreak of a virus epidemia sooner or later (due to various factors facilitaling such event).
