Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

obsession with guns; it relates to the principle of freedom

More likely it's lingering effect of the frontier experience. Generations of people pushing across the continent mean that people on the frontier had to deal with not having state institutions at ready disposal. They had to be able to defend themselves from various dangers... (including others who were on the frontier).

The frontier experience did more to shape American national character than any other single event or process and is the root of many, many things that mystify Europeans.

It's a strange sort of individual who would collect guns.

No weirder than collecting stamps or trainspotting or lots of other weirdo hobbies....

In the US gun collectors almost never commit gun crimes. Gang members and suicides make up the lion's share of gun crime.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 3 [818]

A flavour that should never walk the earth.

Garlic is as good as 10 mothers!

He who hates garlic.... hates life itself!

Conservatives are endlessly trying to recreate a past that never existed.

Progressives are endlessly trying to usher in a future that will never be.

The action is in the middle.... I'm a functionalist in that I'm in favor of policies that improve human life and happiness (taking into account the limits imposed by human nature).

I'm an incrementalist in that sudden changes tend to not increase human life an happiness in the longer term.

I'm an eclecticist in that policies that improve human life and happiness tend to come from different sources.

News / Karol Nawrocki - the New President of Poland [413]

It is pure gossip

fyi (maybe someone can disprove....)

From what I've read, Nawrocki's mother and Nikoś's wife could have known each other because they both worked in the same profession and Nawrocki himself was born not long after Nikoś and his wife divorced because of infidelity. In addition Batyr, in his book, seems to clearly sympathize with Nikoś. I feel terrible passing unconfirmed gossip on like a market woman, but hmmmmm

The most dramatic church growth is among young adults, particularly young men

I'm hearing that from the states.... especially Orthodox churches are seeing a lot of new attendees, mostly young men.

Most men need a sense of mission to feel fulfilled and simply being a non-believing consumer doesn't do that (and neither do most current progressive goals).

Enter religion, especially more austere ones that require some degree of lifestyle change.

This could change but it does seem to be the current case.

No pendulum swings in the same direction forever and most 'progressive' goals are unattainable and/or deeply unattractive to most people, it's normal that the pendulum starts heading back to the center.

News / Karol Nawrocki - the New President of Poland [413]

Nawrocki, when will he take office and will he be different than Duda?

And no one wants to talk about his weird physical resemblance to Nikodem "Nikoś" Skotarczak, the gangster he wrote a book about?

No one is interested in that.... really?

jbzd.com.pl/obr/4128107/artykul-na-miare-onet-pilne-karol-nawrocki-to-nieslubny-syn-nikodema-skotarczaka-ps-nikos

I probably don't believe the theory... but isn't it worth disproving?

Polonia / Polish bus crash in Croatia. Is there a fate? [229]

You can't just build flats, put families with huge problems in and run away to leave them to flounder,

If you put "council housing" and "mould" into youtube there are lots of videos showing some pretty basic problems have not been solved....

An extreme example of bad planning, bad construction and government indifference can be seen here (old but relevant?):

The Westminster Tory city councillors who decided to save money

Those sobs deserve life imprisonment, but I was talking about people who claimed to have been living there, like these:

bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-44396514

While here.... why is there such a long tradition of crappy buildings in the UK?

Years ago I saw a documentary on the social housing movement in the UK (mainly England) after WWII and was shocked at how shabby the construction was.... so it's no surprise many more or less collapsed and/or had to be taken down.

Meanwhile buildings in Poland built around the same time are still very liveable..

In the US the problem with social housing was people who didn't know how to take care of things breaking things through ignorance and/or apathy and/or malice (seems to have been an issue in the UK as well). Again much, much less of that in Poland.

Polonia / Polish bus crash in Croatia. Is there a fate? [229]

This really looks like a one in a million thing.

It it really happened.... terrible tragedies are also seen as opportunities for grifters.... (see Grenfell fraudsters.....)

I am... a bit skeptical and would want real evidence that he's who he says he is and he really was on the flight...

Is that a problem?

Not especially but it does show the folly of allowing large numbers of Moroccans and Somalis (among others) into a country.... Some blowback against Poles are due to the freeloading ways of non-western migrants for sure.

Do Poles in the Netherlands not pay taxes or use shops then?

The graph in the post shows Poles make at most a very small net contribution to the economy while Moroccans (for example) take more in social services than they contribute to the economy.

Migrants from France, the UK and US contribute the most. Those from the Horn of Africa (ie Somalis) are the biggest drag on the economy.

most hostile to people from other places

Why shouldn't they be hostile to those who move to the country and then don't actually contribute to the economy but instead are a drag upon it?

x.com/jonatanpallesen/status/1879634729756135736

Why is being aware of that a 'problem'?

Kids should never even know how to get near a gun.

Shooter apparently 22.... the problem isn't kids around guns or guns per se but the terrible combination of guns and crazy people....

Off-Topic / Eurovision - Today I will be ashamed to be Polish [583]

ell, unlike the howling of others, his song is a song.

Dude, the song has something like a three note range and he's a two note 'singer'... It's a novelty record... good for him to get a continent-wide hit but there's no way it should actually be that high in a contest devoted to.... you know..... songs....

I dont' understand why either Bulgaria or the Eurozone want each other?

I really don't hate the EU but it does go off on tangents that it can't stop even after its clear there's no reason to....

Better to live in a village and be comfortable in Poland B

The whole point is they aren't comfortable... and they want the rest of the country to suffer for it. Now, go hop away.
