Food / What Polish foods and brands do you miss when you go to other countries? [216]

fancier stuff like pear and sunflower seeds

Sometimes they have rocket (rukola, arugula) on top in Warsaw.

It was absolutely delicious

I can pass on the egg but the rest is making my mouth water.

Usually I use cheddar rather than mozzarella or a mix of both to give them a bit of kick.

from Belgium

I once had to give a guided tour of the Old Town in Warsaw to a group of 'active retirees' from Belgium. I met them at their hotel at 9.30 am and they were all sitting round with large beers and not necessarily their first beer.

incorrect

No, I'm correct. And here's a definition of the term you used incorrectly. It has the opposite meaning.

Love / What to answer to the Most annoying phrase that EVERY and EACH polish girl always says? [58]

But that Polish accent is tough to speak English in. It makes it sound mechanical and halting.

It certainly can be. It's not so much the accent as the "prosody" (speed, intonation and timing, especially the timing).

About the timing of a language, thinking the difference between the Swedish Chef on the Muppet Show and an American 'deep south' or a British West Country accent. The first of them sounds staccato and mechanical, the second two sound languid and relaxed. The Polish language doesn't easily fit into either category (linguists can't agree on how to classify it) and this is why Poles speaking English can sound, as you say, mechanical and halting.

It's different again for people from Upper Silesia around Katowice. When they speak English above a certain level they can sound like characters from South Park.

connection

Don't try to obfuscate; it's boring.

nuke

War has not been declared and the example you gave, London, is an interesting one since like France, the UK has nuclear weapons; it would be a terminal mistake to use them against either country.

Yes. If approved by the Non-proliferation folks

Poland can easily withdraw from that or any other treaty; they are a sovereign state.

Who says you have to buy American.

Indeed. There are other countries with companies that manufacture.

Supra-national Government like the EU

Poland chose to join and the Polish government plays a full part in the Union's decision-making processes, as do the voters of Poland. The EU does not however have an army or weapons; Poland does and can decide for itself what type of weapons they have (provided that they are in accordance with international laws) and of course can also choose which companies they buy them from.

Life / Polish women fight for their rights - manifa and other events [306]

do you think the taxpayers should be on the hook for Crystal the stripper's boob job?

In an ideal world, yes. In practice however health services are too financially stretched for that. Breast reduction as an elective procedure? Certainly since it relieves pain, especially in older women and those who do very physical jobs.

It depends on the elective procedure; facial disfigurements or gastric bands yes, since facial issues can have a real effect on someone's psychological wellbeing since some people are really sensitive about things like that and it does affect things like self-esteem and interactions with other, and in the case of obesity, it affects their overall health, life expectancy and future health outcomes which may involve complex treatment later.

Hair transplant or teeth whitening no, not until we fund health services properly. One day though, why not do this in a developed society?

It is the males` problem they don`t care about their health and die earlie

More society's. Women aren't to blame, as you say, however we need a culture where men aren't afraid to go to the doctor.

Is it aging or intoxication?

He's a kid. I've got unwashed mugs in my kitchen sink older than him.

fully paid for at taxpayers expense.

All medical procedures should be at society's 'expense'. That's why all developed societies have universal healthcare.

when you finally have enough enriched uranium

Most nuclear countries buy it from others.

Only places like Iran have to do it from scratch.

inviting in a nuclear power

Or buying weapons from them. There are two in Europe.

contingent on USAF

Or contingent on the U.K., France, Italy etc. rather than a country thousands of miles away with an unreliable government.

Life / A detailed description of the Easter tradition in Poland [41]

Great Saturday

Usually Easter Saturday in English, sometimes Holy Saturday. Quite appropriate really since some churches (certainly the Anglicans and the RC church) have the Holy Fire at the vigil Mass.

There's also a tradition in the U.K. of printers and journalists having a celebration on Maundy Thursday. Historically they didn't have to work on that day since there was no newspaper on Good Friday. The celebration was called a Waysgoose for some reason.

This is something that keeps cropping up again and again. The two governments should sit down together at the highest level and talk it through. Otherwise it'll keep happening.

I was there in December and it felt more like r*SSia than Europe.

Do you think of combining two customs into one??

That could be fun.

We could combine it with the ancient Iranian/Kurdish (very Sarmacki) custom of Nowruz and make them jump over a bonfire as well.

wish someone "MOKREGO SMIGUSA DYNGUSA!"

Don't forget that you have to throw a bucket of water over the key while you're saying it.

And if you've got a convent of Polish nuns nearby and there's a river in the vicinity, just wait until the Topienie Marzanny...

I do not think Poland has that

They have the capital and as the threat from
a certain right wing neighbour increases, they increasingly have the will.

that. It is just easier to invite foreign nuclear powers on your soil

That is easy too, since there are two of those in Europe, both with strong relationships to Poland (one with a military presence in Poland and the Baltics) and there is another, the US, with missiles stationed nearby.

News / SHOULD POLAND HAVE NUKES?? [154]

Those types of weapons took many decades of trial and error to create. It would take Poland just as long to advance from basic, cumbersome Atomic bombs.

Poland wouldn't need to "advance from basic" though. Precisely because of the decades of trial and error by those countries who have developed such weapons.

They have been invented and developed already. Torq expresses that quite well.

The UK is looking to upgrade Trident (and the old Trident missiles are still good), France produces weapons well, and there's no reason Poland would have to reinvent the wheel by doing it from scratch. Poland does after all have world-class scientists and engineers as well as having good relations with most of the world's nuclear states.

It went over Poland territory so obviously it WAS aimed at Poland.

It wasn't. It was aimed at Ukraine and barely strayed over the border. It's far from the first.

I read that they put some birds in the air

They scrambled jets as is normal however there was little they could practically do. The objects were gone as soon as they appeared.

As an insult that doesn't work with Americans.

I've heard that the "c word" is less acceptable there than in the UK or AUS and tend to use it sparingly around Americans (while watching their discomfort when others use it).

I suspect many people from over there would be shocked to see old ladies in northern England with bibles in hand walking to church saying to each other "eeh, Ah've 'ad a cvnt of a week".

I thought cider was French

Most of the world thinks Warsaw is russian. It isn't, it's Polish, just as cider is English (and most of the world's cider is made and consumed there).

Nike is an American company.

There was me thinking she was a Greek goddess.

So should you. You may well be poison however you aren't a Soviet nerve agent.

And anyway, they don't advertise.

Plenty of time to lock on and destroy it

If it's launched.

They chose not to. It wasn't aimed at Poland, was over the airspace for literally seconds, Poland is not at war, and nobody was injured or otherwise harmed on Polish territory.

Poland's defense system of patriots or minutemen

Defence system? They have their own defence protocols and saw no need to use them.

What about beer

We do make excellent beer (and the world's best cider too) however white lightening (or diamond white or various similar names) is a product sold by corner shops in plastic bottles for alkies.
