History / Historical Polish parades [42]

And needs to be stopped.

You can't turn back time, ever. Bette Midler tried.

Poland has a long tradition of marching; if anything that seems to be growing. A good thing, since it brings people together.

and I find that skin color to be quite beautiful

It's striking to see. Only one tribe and they're also very tall.

Humanity has lots of skin tones, and they're all beautiful.

In Poland, there are people who look Mediterranean, people who look Tatar and people who look Scottish or Scandinavian. The world is a mix.

How many people have tribes? Are numbers of that demographic shrinking then?

You seem to have a fixation about that topic; there are threads enough for you to opine about it in; we're actually talking about the tradition of parades in Poland. Good to see plenty this year.

at odds with each other.

No surprises.

Anyway, the more the merrier.

parada being taken over by big business."

It changes it, and not always for the better, but no bad thing to see advertisers and big companies finally recognising the buying power of the demographic.

You can have both grassroots and corporate involvement. The Caribbean Carnivals in the U.K. have both, as does Pride London and that generally works well.

Meths (short for methylated spirit) in English. Nasty stuff.

This picture was doing the rounds online a couple of years ago. Do you think it's genuine?

coz the first one took place in 2005

I took part in that. They're always nice events and great fun.

Can you guess why

Why? I noticed two rather than the usual one but sadly couldn't attend.

Life / What do Poles really think about cats? [470]

Did you know that cats can growl

They fluff out their fur to look bigger. Postural changes too.

I used to have one, from being a kitten to old age, who would do that if she felt threatened. If she was really on one, she'd start turning round sideways in a sort of a spin.

The one we have now growls like a dog when he hears our neighbour (he hates her) coming home from work.

Life / Will Poland ever be multicultural like Sweden, Germany or France? [283]

Europe is multicultural, including Poland increasingly. There have always been people who've lived abroad , married someone from a different culture and returned.

Australian Aboriginals make people from Ghana look white

I've known people in Africa who were almost jet black. And when working in Sudan, I saw a couple of members of a tribe who are so black they almost have a dark bluish shade. And of course there's no shortage of white and lighter skinned people here. I know north and west Africans who could easily pass for Polish.

We all know there is a sunsegment of Polish women

What is a 'sunsegment'?

And why shouldn't women go on holiday for a bit of fun? There are enough men who go to Pattaya and elsewhere in Thailand for much the same thing. What do you imagine all those young men and women go to Izmir and Faliraki for? To look at the art museum and the ancient cathedral?

In any case, there isn't the slightest suggestion that the lady in the photo who won the beauty contest has anything to do with holiday romances, and if she did, so what?

Does it mean the PF has become more tolerant

Two or three far right trolls, one in particular, an old man from Poland who never actually goes to PL deter new people from posting.

She was born in the UK but has lived almost all her life in Poland and is Polish. How is she different from Omenaa Mensah or Aleksandra Szwed (among others)?

She's not, and we'll see exponential growth of this over the next few decades.

Cottage cheese or twarög? I'd use twaróg instead for cooking.

News / Coronavirus in Poland - part 2 [599]

don't understand how you can make conspiracy theories about a plague that killed millions of people

They can't help themselves. A real streak of evil.

Let's treat it as a test against the next plague that will surely come.

And this will happen. It could be at any time and is likely to be far worse.

Food / Poles prefer pizza & kebab? [73]

kebab in Germany

They have some nice ones in Berlin.

I wish you'd been in the U.K. when kebabs were new in the late 80s. You'd have liked them. Most of the shop owners were Greek Cypriots and made the kebab meat themselves from lamb and fresh thyme.

Food / Poles prefer pizza & kebab? [73]

Kebabs seem to be becoming almost the national dish in Warsaw. Almost never with lamb.

That King Kebab chain is everywhere and has some horrible things on the menu.

What's telling is the freezers in Makro where they sell lots of different brands of diner meat for kebab shops. There's a crazy difference in price and quality between them all and it's almost always the cheapest ones that you see people buying..

Feared, yet oddly enough there's not one iota of evidence and the gentleman involved was found innocent in a court of law.

You do seem obsessed with cultures and countries better than your own...

UK, Ireland / Polish immigrants in the UK - victims or criminals?! [295]

With these criminals, there'll presumably be a POCO order over the next few months adding years to their sentences unless they repay the money they stole.

" A shameless couple stole £720k from the UK taxpayer and used it to fund their lavish lifestyle - splashing out on designer clothing, a spa day and a Rolex."

They certainly liked the high life...

"Wiktoria Packowska and her partner Wojciech Kowalski, both 28, created false bank accounts, identity documents and utility bills to make more than 80 false benefits claims across three years."

And where there's a POCO, there's no possibility of them being allowed to transfer to a foreign jail.

" Packowska was heard whimpering as she and her partner were led from the dock to begin their jail terms.".

Iść za exists.

I once had a lot of fun pretending to misunderstand instructions and to confuse "idź za nim" and "idź zanim"...

though "byc nastepca", "nastep(-ow)ac".

But not to follow a person in the street nor follow a profession nor follow a football team or some of the other meanings.

You won't hear many native speakers of Polish in Poland who use the word follow.

Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1050]

@Lyzko
It means an awful lot more than that. Quite a complex concept. I use the word often in Polish but when translating professionally would choose a rendering specific to the situation. There's no exact cognate in English, just as Polish doesn't have an exact cognate for the English word "follow".

I don't trawl the web looking for pictures.

It's a nice enough name for a ready made mustard though.

Do you believe in the blood group diet? It's generally considered a scam to sell books. Certainly there's no known scientific evidence.

Not particularly scientific.

If you like mustard, enjoy it.

It's probably nothing to do with blood groups though.

Travel / Poles as tourists in foreign countries [93]

low IQ, high testosterone, and a child's conception of self.

It depends what country they're in, in terms of level of training and policing culture.

In some places it's mostly a graduate profession with a good gender mix and first class training, in others it's thugs and killers.
