Life / Clothes and Fashion Polish style - then, now whenever! [25]

I dare say, such clothes were super cool in the 1960s.

Yeah, that's the kind of look I associate with the 60's.

Twiggy1

Twiggy2

In PRL:

Poland60s

I wonder myself, since I am quite popular with women.

Until you open your mouth? :D

Anyway, whats not charming abt saying fak and talking about boobs?

Are you a Disco Polo fan by any chance? ;D

You may not do that here, but elsewhere you do.

You're projecting heavily right now LOL

@wslipach, you must be a real hit with the ladies - you're just such a "charmer"... lol 🥴

I'm going to kick things off with Barbara Hulanicki and Biba

I remember watching a documentary about her :)

RAF flying jackets from leather would cost a small fortune normally but it was almost for peanuts in the army surplus shops.

That's cool, I can imagine boys loving such stuff :)

As I remember, they used to have a lot of coats with West German flags on the arm.

Some boys during my teen years would wear military-looking jackets with those flags - I remember that I wondered why German flags... 🤔

I never could find anything that I would like

Oh, btw, I've remembered something... I think my mother once did find a dress from one of the famous brands (Italian I think) in a secondhand shop and she gave it to me - it was a black dress with pockets of sorts. I didn't wear it though, because it looked kind of "sporty" to me, as far as I remember and I didn't like such style at that time. 🤔 I think it's possible that I still have it somewhere - I'll have to look for it one day... :)

Most of the combat jackets seemed to come from the Red Army!!

Ah, so you mean those were real military uniforms/clothes?

It was 'cool' to buy vintage clothes for years in Ireland and the UK

That wasn't the case in Poland - after the fall of communism there weren't many shops with clothes, let alone affordable ones and Poland was going through though times economically, so buying at secondhand shops was simply a necessity for many people. The situation changed over the years and so the perception of those shops changed too. And during communist times it was a whole different story - there was a problem with buying any clothes at all, so women often sew clothes for themselves and their family...

We all had combat jackets as we called them, and reefer jackets (sailors' jackets).

I can understand reefer jackets, but what those "combat jackets" looked like? 🤔

Actually some people in Poland deliberately scour the secondhand shops for designer label stuff at rock bottom prices and then sell it online at a profit.

That's very possible - if I'm to be honest I don't have the time to go through all those heaps of clothes in secondhand shops - I never could find anything that I would like and just wasted a lot of time... and shopping for clothes/shoes for a woman is time-consuming enough already, so... ;D 😭

Clothes can be from a second-hand store

These days it doesn't even have to be secondhand shops - in every shopping mall in Poland there there are stores with Polish brands which are cheaper than Western ones. There are also cheap stores like Pepco (1200 stores in Poland), TK Maxx, etc. You can also buy stuff on-line and hunt for sales.

I sometimes even buy clothes at places like Lidl - usually stuff to wear at home, but not always. A few years ago I bought nice classic leather ankle boots for a ridiculously low price (something like 60 PLN o_O) at Lidl - you'd have to pay around 200 PLN for such boots at a normal shoe shop (and that would be a price for a Polish brand, not even a Western one). Good quality, comfortable - one probably wouldn't be able to tell that they were bought at a discount supermarket ;D I still wear them :)

Surveys show that 70% of Polish people shop in secondhand clothes shops.

Yup and apparently not only because of low prices. Young people are more likely to shop at secondhand shops than other age groups - it's trendy these days, because you can find original clothes and it's eco:

The rising cost of living in the USA is causing a significant problem with household debt.

I don't how comparable it is to the US, but prices have been rising in Poland too.

a Cabal that runs the show.

What... lol

News / Ups and downs of the democratic government 2023-2027 in Poland [342]

as for those weird adds with fake news (...) I see them all the time on Instagram (...) Omenaa Mensah (...) seem to be "trending" in them

Omenaa's Mensah husband, the founder of InPost, is going to war with Meta over those fake news adds which are featuring his wife:

money.pl/gospodarka/rafal-brzoska-idzie-na-wojne-z-koncernem-marka-zuckerberga-czerpanie-dochodow-z-przestepstwa-7045751186803520a.html

Good. I don't know why they are allowing them in the first place (well, I do now - they are being paid to put them on - they're just greedy bastards).

Btw, recently I also saw an add on Instagram posted by user Rzeczpospolita Informacyjna with a deep fake video of the Polish president, Andrzej Duda, speaking in Polish with Duda's voice, advertising some "Poland Auto Trade" company o_O I took a screenshot:

And it's not just Polish fight, but for now the Polish government is failing. It looks like the Australian government did a good job in stopping those greedy, unethical, blackmailing, thieving big tech companies:

Of course, I'm not an expert

No sh1t... lol

I don't see a serious threat as long as independent media remain.

Did you even read the articles I linked to? From start to finish? Because it doesn't look like it.

Polska Rada Biznesu (Polish Business Roundtable) somehow can see the threat and supports Polish media in their protest:

I thought you would care about those horrible conditions for child psychiatric patients that PiS caused and PO solved.

I wouldn't expect them to solve every problem Poland has after only 8 months in power, but it looks like they didn't forget about this one:

medonet.pl/biznes-system-i-zdrowie,rzad-dofinansuje-polska-psychiatrie--mamy-sporo-do-zrobienia,artykul,49225945.html

However, I'd expect them not to cause new problems.
How about you? Do you care about Polish media? PiS and their supporters claimed that they care about pluralism in media in Poland and the right to getting information. Where are they now?

Is the Polish government betraying Polish media in favour of the foreign big tech? It looks like it:

wiadomosci.wp.pl/po-co-nam-polskie-media-skoro-mamy-google-i-mete-opinia-7045090697894432a

Btw, I have some observations concerning some of the stuff mentioned in this article. Firstly, about those all powerful algorithms. I've seen artists complaining about them quite some time ago already. That it was better on social media and YouTube before they were introduced. And they're still complaining about them. I see other users complaining about them on regular basis too. Why are they there then if they make things worse? 🤨🤔

And as for those weird adds with fake news that the journalist mentioned - I see them all the time on Instagram for example. They are made to look like they are news from "Gazeta Wyborcza". Omenaa Mensah and Sławomir Mentzen seem to be "trending" in them now for some reason o_O (I wonder if Kuba Wojewódzki and Omenaa Mensah know that "they" are promoting some Neoprofit app lol):

News / Rape and sexual abuse in Poland [198]

There was no "message". They raped, because they could.

I'm saying this because Soviet soldiers were behaving in the same way in countries they were "liberating" from the Nazis.

So what kind of "message" Soviet soldiers intended to send by raping women in Poland? Or by raping women in Serbia?:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_during_the_liberation_of_Serbia

That it's better not get "liberated" by the Soviets? lol Well, we definitely got that message.

No, I wouldn't.

Why not?

BTW, did you know that Auschwitz female guards were more cruel than their male buddies?

No, I didn't - where did you get that info? And what does it have to do with anything anyway?

And that German women happily made ammo and guns that would later be used to murder millions of Soviets?

Firstly, I'm sure not all women worked in ammo factories. Secondly, you don't know which were doing it "happily". Thirdly, Jews were forced to produce ammo, etc. for Nazis too. Also, I doubt German 12-15-year-old girls were working in factories producing ammo.

Simple. Victory must include this message: Don't even think about it again.

There was no "message". They raped, because they could.

Yeah no problem for me.

That's clearly a problem for the RuSSian government though and that "funny guy" Putin.

I would give them a break in 1945 in Berlin.

I wonder if you'd say the same thing if you lived in Germany back then and your granddaughters were gang-raped to death by Soviet soldiers.

It was just a joke.

He shouldn't be joking about that. Rape isn't funny. Especially made by a public person and in such a context - Putin is a president himself. Jokes often tell you something about people's attitude's from what I've noticed. Did you notice that women don't joke about rape? Why is it always men? I think you know why.

Even you, Paulina, must admit that it's very impressive that the President of Israel managed to rape 10+ women.

No, I don't find anything "impressive" about it.

Unfortunately for women, most of them are trusting naive idiots because they were raised by equally trusting and naive parents.

Then educate them. My parents never talked to me about such stuff.

But don't end there. Educate your sons about what rape is and how important consent is.

Jesus... I had to google it to check if it's true...

From the article:

"Andrei Kolesnikov, a Kremlin pool veteran, heard the rest. "It was one of those moments when you couldn't believe your ears," he said. Another reporter said officials had burst into laughter."

I wonder if they'd be laughing if their wife or daughter was raped... Stupid a$$holes.

Lighten up, Paulina.

How is that supposed to lighten me up... 🙁

And if you needed even more:

"A 1994 study found that between 25 and 35 percent of men lack knowledge about what constitutes rape, and a 2010 report noted men are more likely than women to have these attitudes."

Now that's freaking scary.

And this:

"She said Turner committed rape but that he does not think he did so. He did not apologize for sexual assault in a court statement to the judge. He apologized for drinking too much."
Paulina

And more from the article:

"University of Arizona professor Mary Koss, who coined the term "date rape" in the 1980s, found in a 1987 study that 7.7 percent of male students reported anonymously they had forced or tried to force someone to have sex with them. Almost none of them considered that to be rape.

Koss said she still hears these sentiments from her students. She said some young men think that, if they're as intoxicated as a female partner, whatever happens can be blamed on the alcohol. She adds that others think young women secretly want to be pushed into a sexual encounter."

And its very fruitful to enshrine consent in law.

And consent wasn't included in the previous definition of rape in Polish law, which is... messed up. So, when I think about it now I have to go back on my statement here that I made in another thread:

the problem wasn't the law

Actually - it was.
After all - this is what rape boils down to - lack of consent. So that should be included in the definition in the first place and not last.

I've just realised that based on the previous definition of rape you would be allowed to rape an unconscious person or someone who is too drunk to resist o_O Because an unconscious or a completely wasted person can't fight back/resist, so the rapist wouldn't have to:

1. Use violance.
2. Use unlawful threats.
3. Use deception.

So, based on the previous definition - if you rape an unconscious or a completely drunk person and you didn't make this person unconscious or drunk yourself by the use of deception then... it's not rape o_O

So, yeah, that definition definitely wasn't complete, to put it mildly.

So now you will tell me : "What does it matter? Every moron knows what rape is!"

Do they though? Clearly not - there are morons who don't know and some of those morons are Polish judges. And Polish judges are not unique in this.

This discussion reminded me of the pretty famous case in the US when a successful student of some prestigious university raped an unconscious girl at a parking lot and was caught during the act by passers-by. He got only 6 months in prison.

So why am I writing about this and why the change in the definition of rape was important and needed? Here is why:

washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/06/11/a-huge-myth-about-rape-on-college-campuses-gets-to-the-heart-of-the-problem/

"Oklahoma State University professor John Foubert, who designed his school's rape prevention program, asked a group of first-year fraternity brothers in a 2007 study whether they'd ever raped someone. They all said no. Foubert changed the phrasing, however, and 10 percent of first-year brothers reported they'd penetrated a woman against her permission.

"They don't see this behavior as rape, perhaps as a way to protect themselves, to not be responsible for their behavior if that happens," Foubert said. "It's not just college students. You hear these beliefs in broader society.""

It's not a civil case. The guilt has to be proven. The evidence responsibility lies on the prosecution.

Exactly. I don't know where some men get this notion that FROM NOW ON a woman's word will be enough to sentence a man for rape lol They must be living in some fantasy world of their own making and not in Polish reality.
Paulina

News / Ups and downs of the democratic government 2023-2027 in Poland [342]

then clearly the former definition wasn't enough.

I should probably add "not enough for Polish judges". As it was stated in the article - the problem wasn't the law, but the mentality. And since you can't change the mentality "just like that", you have to change the law. And maybe in the long run that will also influence the mentality at least to some extent.
