Zawila family

Does anyone here have any knowledge of Zawila family? As it pertains to me...Zawilas from the Małopolskie area of Poland, specifically Zembrzyce / Zarębki?

My grandfather, Stefan Zawiła, was one of 10 children born in his family with only half surviving childhood. It was a hard life at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century(ies). He and his brothers all left home in their teens. He went to various parts of America (Massachusetts, Ohio, Maryland), as did 2 other brothers (and I have just learned - maybe a previously unknown 1/2 sister?!) while 1 went to Argentina. With life as it was then, people fell out of contact and I have no knowledge of this side of my family. I believe my grandfather/Zawilas identified as a Goral, though my grandmother's side did not and our North American family took my grandmother's traditions. Consequently, I am so curious to know if I have any living Zawila family, especially in North America.

I am grateful for your insights. I never knew my grandparents and have been yearning for this awareness forever.

Best wishes and Szczęśliwego Nowego Roku!

Jen (Canada)

Zawiła is definitely a Polish surname and there are Polish people with this name living in the US:

"The Zawiła surname is found in the United States, with Michigan having the highest population of families with this last name in 1920."

Hi Jen, I also have some Zawila family from Zembrzyce. My Great grandfather Mike Zawila was born there. He then immigrated to Colorado. Do you have any other names or information of your family? I'm curious if we have a connection somewhere.

Is Zawila the same as Zawilla?

It's not the same but close and it is Zawiła. Zawilla has an Italian connotation.
