Can someone please help me on this! I was looking for some of my family in Kattowitz,Poland. My grandmother was born there and had to leave her family at 16 during WW2. I'm really wanting to find some of them to talk to them. Her last name was Lipski. Any help.

if this helps her name was Erna Klara Lipski born on March 2, 1925.
Thanks Allison.

The town is spelled Katowice. You can check with the records in that town, although a lot of them were destroyed during the war.

Hello:

My maiden name is Butryn, and my grandparents names were Lipska, Panek and Pajek. Can any one give me information on these. I often see names with ski, etc. but havent seen any ending in ryn or ek. Thank you in advance.

BUTRYN: Polonised version of the Lithuanian name Butrymas (no English equivalent).

LIPSKI: root-word lipa (linden or lime tree); topo nick for someone from Lipsk, Lipsko or similar (Lindenville).

PANEK: diminutive of pan (lord, master, sir), hence lording.

PAJEK: Possibly derived from paja (mouth, snout. yap) or pajk (dialectal variant of pajÄ…k = spider).

The -ek is common Polish diminutive and in rare cases patronymic ending; eg pies = dog, piesek = doggy; -ryn is not an ending but part of the Lithuanian name Butrymas..
