Hello,

I would be very grateful for any assistance researching my ancestry and family:

Great-grandfather Joseph BASZCZAK
BORN 1856 to 1863 (probably the earlier years) Hleszczawa, Trembowla, Tarnopil, Galizien Kroenlande, Osterreich.
Son of Adalbert (Wojciech) Baszczak and Anna TOMKOW. Adalbert's potential mother cited in parish death records Martha Beszouycha born about 1791/1792 and died 1882 Cygany, Skala, Borszczow, Galizien Kroenlande, Osterreich

DIED 1931 Frances, Pacific, Washington, USA
MARRIED
Great-grandmother Anastasia BUJAR
BORN 1861 to 1870 (probably the earlier years) Hleszczawa, Osterreich
Daughter of Michael Bujar and Maria
DIED 1933 Frances, USA
CHILDREN born in Cygany, Osterreich

From the present back to the 1787 Austrian Cadastral the surname has been Baszczak and I'm unaware at this time of any relation to Błaszczak. The surname Baszczak is the Latinized form of Бащчк. Joseph, Anastasia and family emigrated to Canada as Greek Catholics who spoke Ruthenian and their family allegiance appears to be to the pre-partition Polish empire. After World War II Operation Vistula forced many Baszczaks to relocate to the former German lands in and around Legnica while their homeland within Poland is in the extreme South East corner bordering the Ukraine.

I look forward to contact with any genealogists researching Baszczak, Tomkow and Bujar families of the former Galicia. I'm familiar with the region and have many maps but I would treasure any detailed village (census) maps of that include Hleszczawa and Cygany.

Cheers!

BASZCZAK/BASZCZUK: patronymic nick (the -uk is the more Ukrianian version) for the son of Barszcz (dialectally pronoucned Baszcz). Barszcz is either an invasive weed or a beetroot soup.

BUJAR: Old Polish word for bull.

TOMKÓW: rare patronymic from Tomek equiavlent of Thomson.

Did you ever hear about Polana in Bieszczady Mountains? I am sure that Baszczak family was staying there. I have a map of residents (before they were resettled to lower Silesia region of Poland).. Surname Baszczak is listed there as (Baszczak Stanislaw "Szkurat"). When I googled "Szkurat" small village in Ukraine was one of the first on the list. On the map you can see also Baszczak Dymitr, Michal and one more with no name. If you are interested I can send you PDF of this map.Regards Kat

Szkurat

Hi Kat, Forgive for not noticing your reply until now and I hope this message finds you well. I did originally research Baszczaks who migrated from Polana to Canada but couldn't connect them to my own. I have even conversed with some of the descendants of those resettled to lower Silesia. I would appreciate a copy of that map of residents. The introduction of 'Szkurat' is new to me. Thank you very much for your kind reply!
