Travel / Travelling solo to Poland - things to see and do - Euro 2012 [13]

Former England captain Sol Campbell told BBC Panorama's Chris Rogers that he fears for the safety of football fans travelling to Euro 2012.

Mr Campbell questioned the decision of Uefa, European football's governing body, to award the tournament to joint hosts Ukraine and Poland after seeing footage taken by the programme that shows racist and anti-Semitic chanting in the terraces and an attack on a group of Asian students that took place in Ukraine.

UK, Ireland / Common pitfalls for Poles learning English [187]

It means to pay attention to what the teacher is saying.

But it's not in common usage in this century or the last, is it?

"when I was at the Jagiellonian University of Krakow..etc"

That's a brilliant one. I've heard it so often. I think we're meant to step back in awe and amazement when we hear that line.

Attend to can also mean that you listen carefully to, as in to attend to the teacher

Attend to the teacher? What would that mean?

UK, Ireland / Polish question: what's with the Germans, Brits? Foreign groups in Great Britain. [46]

HI, All. I'm curious about one thing that I've foundc while living on the Island. Can someone clarify?

Observations:

-there are more Americans and Germans in GB than any other foreign group

-nobody talks about it

This isn't true. At the last census Germans and Americans were in fourth and fifth place - and since then many eastern European countries will have overtaken them.

Nobody talks about it? This is because it isn't true.

This thread is like saying "Nobody in France is over five feet tall. Why is nobody talking about it?"
