Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

You were well and truly rumbled there Peter, or are you still intending on posting those calculations.
Were waiting

Not likely to do it soon. In the process of suing my employers so I couldn't give a F*** about doing another spreadsheet

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

A claim has been made that when inflation is taken into account, prices are down by 24.7% to 29%. Now we are waiting for the claimant to produce a source to support his claim (and his maths). We're also making sure that any claims at 'But that isn't the real inflation rate' are impossible.

I used a 5%, the approx figure for the previous two years.

History / Would you classify the Poland's Communist years as a "Soviet occupation" ? [221]

From 1945 until the mid 50's - yes, it pretty much was. After then - no

It took five years to install the occupation power, which then could continue to operate as a soviet puppet. Remember Marshal Law was imposed to prevent a re-invasion. So it was an occupation with threat of worse.

One could easily make the polar argument with regard to the Soviet troops on Polish soil, far more Poles supported the communists than supported the opposition (until the opposition gained critical mass).

Yet when they kicked out the Communists the Russians went too. How many people vote communist when they isn't a Russia invasion/occupation threat?

News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

Why are poles so desparate to move to the UK, Ireland and Germany?

Simple answer, they are not. If they were 'desperate' they would have moved, but 95% of Poles are still in Poland. The number of Poles moving to Germany is very small, a few tens of thousands, any that wanted to travel have already done so.

Canada and Australia are much nicer countries than UK but you need skills or qualifications to move there.

Last time I checked the most desirable skills for Australia were laying concrete and cutting hair.

Food / Swiss Cheese in Poland [14]

What is the name in Poland for the cheese that Americans know as Swiss?

The American cheese called Swiss is a generic cheese in that looks similar way to cheeses from Switzerland. So you aren't going to get an equivalent.

News / Poland being the powerhouse of Europe [40]

There isn't much point having heavy industry when China can always undercut them.

Chinese wages are rocketing. For instance, the pay for programmers in Poland is the same as china.

the rain fall in Poland is not great. Central and Northern Poland is one of the driest regions in Europe. in fact you have to travel to Spain to find such low rainfall in an EU country

the fertility of the soil is not great either and the harsh winters make farm land far less productive than in Western Europe

Yet Poland is a food exporter and if it used more intensive techniques it could produce triple the UK's production (for example). Soil quality is good and rainfall sufficient - plus there is hugh water table reserves. Poland is not a Spanish desert, Northern Spain is extremely wet which probably skews the numbers.

and the harsh winters make farm land far less productive than in Western Europe

And yet farmers can have two or three crops per year.

Real Estate / ADVICE please: Rightful owner of property in Poland? Property Value? [32]

If it's where I think it is - then it's nowhere near worth $50,000.

Official figures say 4pln per m2 is the maximum in Poland. So 40,000m2=160k zloty around $45k at todays rate. Thats the absolute top whack, if its not the best, its will be worth less.

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

This comment speaks volumes about not only peterweg but so many other posters.

Accurate, reality-based commentators, yes. I think you will find many of your countrymen would agree with us.

The facts speak for themselves, Poles don't want to move to the US as its unappealing. Those that do probably move there to be with family as much as anything - if they want work they move around Europe.

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

do you actually have any reasons Weg, or are you just going to jump in with your usual little dig and then never be seen on the thread again?

I answer if I can be bothered, this argument has been done many times before and there isn't much more to be said.

If someone said that Poland was a $hithole, would you understand?

Yes. In many ways it is, but that's because it was dirt poor, a situation that is changing dramatically for the better. Something that cannot be said for the US, its only way is down. It will get very ugly there.

"No one is going to USA from here plasticpole". That is quite a dumb thing to say, exactly how many millions do you claim to represent? Obviously people are going to America, always have, always will.

About 8000 Poles emigrated to the US in 1996. there were about 70k Polish illegals in 1996.

dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/statistics/illegal.pdf

For F***'s sake. More Poles emigrated to the UK in 5 years than emigrated to the US in the last 150 years.

I think you will find that more Poles emigrate to every individual country in the EU than the US in any given year.

Travel / ARE POLISH NIGHTCLUBS UNSAFE? [11]

fter the stairs in my favourite Kitsch collapsed Im starting to wonder about the health and safety standards in pubs and nightclubs....let's face it when we're drunk we don't notice these things and how often do you go to nightclubs completely sober...

I was really concerned at the state of the stairs on that night club a few months before they collapsed. The fact is H&S is not taken seriously, an article in Krakow Post quoted a owner as saying a lot of the basement clubs are death traps in a fire - I'd tend to agree.

The problem is that the regulations can be ignored if the firemaster just so happens to be friends with the owner.

leksander Rączka, son of Wielopole 15 owner Jan Rączka, told the newspaper Gazeta Krakowska

“We are very sorry for what happened in our building. However, from our side all the mandatory inspections of the building were made. These showed that the condition of the building was good and that there were no structural defects.”

It was safe becuase we were inspected... typical. I'm not a structural engineer but ancient stone steps in a domestic house with no steel support will eventually break with heavy use.

Thats why the place was not suitable to be used as a night club.

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

As American's sometimes point out on this , Poles don't know much about their country, so they imagine its a good place to emigrate too.

Basically Poles who want to emigrate are ignorant about America, although some have family.

The numbers are small compared to emigrants to Western Europe where the healthcare system and wages are better for Poles.

News / Y Shaped high speed rail line Poland [78]

Poland is somewhat perfect for such high speed lines - most connections between major cities are on the flat (not much hills between Warsaw/Lodz/Poznan/Wroclaw/Krakow) and there are plenty of people willing to pay a lot of money to travel quickly.

No chance of the government spending it on Krakow. A decent road to the capital? no chance. Krakow was completely missed from this plan as well.

Grzegorz_ is right. Build the road system and improve the existing rail network to a basic level first. Spending billions on a high speed network is a poor investment.

Study / Information Needed: Skarbek University, Warsaw. [57]

ok thanks..... please suggest me a good Europe country to pursue my MBA and where i need to get a part time job also......

Germany has a very good education system and can teach in English.

what are the job prospects for indians over there aftr completion of my course.

Very low. Try get a job at an Indian multinational and get a transfer to Poland. Sounds like a long shot? well it is a better chance than finding a good job here, if you are lucky you may get a job with pay, very lucky and you will get Polish minimum wage..
