Sad or stupid - a Polish teacher killed whilst urinating on live rail

"Network Rail says in excess of 60 people die on railway lines,
of which about 40% are electrified, each year...."

In your opinion 24 electrocuted victims each year is good price
to safe money Reilway Firms.

There will always be idiots in every coutnry but of course some countries have more idiots than others.

The UK's idiot control programme includes a live rail. If you are stupid enough to play chicken with trains or p!ss on the live rail - fizz bang - one less idiot to worry about. Huge amounts of money to be saved by giving people the opportunity to remove themselves from the gene pool

I bet 90% of people who call the unfortunate deceased an idiot, do a lot of silly things out of absentmindedness. I doubt even a humanities teacher would cosciously urinate on a live rail. In Poland most trains run on Diesel fuel, so it's a kind of a default setting in our brain. He didn't reflect on how the engine was powered and paid the consequences. Looks ridiculous now but it's certainly not enough to call him an idiot.

Maybe he should have reflected on using a toilet.

Are you also telling us that it is normal for Polish people to urinate on railway tracks.

Yes. But we are still alive to tell the tale.

As my PE teacher used to say - Dont cross now, theres a bus coming. Too late. Sweep him up

Maybe he should have reflected on using a toilet.

I think he did and chose not to - probably wanted to avoid the charge (he didn't consider the electric one:-)

Are you also telling us that it is normal for Polish people to urinate on railway tracks.

Actually, the standard lavatory system in Polish trains operates by releasing the feaces on the tracks. That's why it's forbidden to use the loo when the train stands at the station. So well, yes, it is normal for Polish and any other people to urinate on railway tracks while on a train. While not on a train, most Polish people would probably choose a clean, cheap and pervert-free toilet if it were close enough and they knew where it was. In the case under discussion one or more of these conditions may not have been fulfilled or/and the man was an excentric or/and drunk.

it was an accident and it was most definitely the poor man's fault, you can't blame the rail for it, there are signs all over the place telling the folk not to go on the tracks, or high voltage warning signs. people do it at their own risk, if the guy wasn't electrocuted he might've been ran over by a train, these are the risks you have to be aware of when you decide to step off the platform. it was an avoidable accident, but sh*t happens every day and some people pay the highest price. it's idiotic to put the blame on the rail, there would be no deaths if people followed the rules.

Exactly, to be that close to the third rail, he would have also been in danger of being hit by a train

You can't make it impossible for people to get onto the tracks, if you did how would the emergency services rescue people if there was an accident. All you can do is put up signs and expect people to take notice.

All you can do is put up signs and expect people to take notice.

You can do much more. See my post up in which I've described 3 ideas
increasing safety of the third rail. Next idea is described beneath:
"Title:
Non-hazardous third rail energizing warning device
Document Type and Number:
United States Patent 5524852

Abstract:
A third rail warning device in which the third rail carries in use a dangerously high voltage. Connected to the third rail is a source of relatively safe voltage as a warning that the dangerously high voltage is about to be applied to the third rail. A time delay is employed to terminate the safe voltage and permit automatic connection of the dangerously high voltage, and an alarm is actuated when the safe voltage is being applied to the third rail. "

do all that so some idiots can safely p*ss on the tracks. you are not allowed to go on the tracks, if someone can't quite grasp the meaning of that then they will have to pay for their ignorance. you're pathetic, please get lost.

So, turn off the electric supply so the person on the track won't get electrocuted..........Does this mean we should also stop trains from running on the track so people can safely go on them without getting hit?

Really idiot, but I am not address it to the teacher. Read again and try
to think:
"1) The simplest solution to protect people is switching off power from
3rd rail insulated segment in platform area when they no longer require
power. It should be switched on for short time when the train starts."
Catch an idea: An insulated segment of the 3rd rail in the platform area
is powered only for half minute or less for start the train.
>
There are also people who suffer from vertigo or sometimes feel dizzy
or sick.

lol, what a joke, there is a much simpler way to sort it out, put up a sign IN ENGLISH to stay of the tracks as it could be a danger to yourself. If you are not able to read or have the common sense to stay of the track then you probably deserve a bit of an electric shock. May even shock you into becoming more intellegent :)

|The guy made a mistake and paid for it with his life, put it this way, he won't make the same mistake again :))

wow wow wow i was not talking about you, i was talking about the guy who releaved himself on the railway line. I'm not having a stab at your English mate, i'm not like that. Please don't think i was getting at you for your language because i was not.

I was refering to your point and merely suggesting a different solution to the one you produced.

Really idiot

First of all, there is no need for name calling and insults

Some forum members can't understand what I am writing.

Secondly, I used to work for the railway, as have members of my family....My ex is a safety standards manager for the railway, so i do understand quite a bit actually.

You quote network rail statistics, but fail to mention that these people are illegally trespassing on railway property...wrap people up in cotton wool all you like, but you can never protect people from themselves

Have you ever had to spend time with a train driver who has killed some idiot who decided to go for a walk along the track? Well I have and it's not a pleasant experience

well said, its rather obvious, if you break the rules then you are endangering yourself and that is not the fault of the railway company. If your stupid enough to run around or pee on the lines then you deserve what you get if you ask me
