Sad or stupid - a Polish teacher killed whilst urinating on live rail

think along the lines of dropping a hair dryer in the bath whilst youre sitting in it :)

Not quite the same really - Mr V I worked for the Ops division at Network Rail and hold my PTS card and know a little about the voltage and dangers of tracks, so I find it really hard to believe that a man standing on the platform and pissing on the track could get electricuted to death...

Oh well...let that be a warning to those who feel the need to urinate in public...

I dont think he was standing on the platform. But whatever.

Youre suggesting that peeing on to the live rail wouldnt result in electrocution?

well actually that rather depends on the stream, if it was constant then the electric current could pass through her urine upto her body. However if she had staggered the flow of urine she could have stopped herself being electricuted. Obviously this stupid Polka didn't realise the lines were live :)

But not as popular as in France where it is approaching the status of the number one participant sport. I recall the introduction of some special walls in Paris whose design guarantees a splash back for the offenders as part of the clean up Paris mayoral campaign.

I mean could you imagine being one of her friends there, she's p*ssing on the rail track and suddenly she's shacking like Elvis.

I find it really hard to believe that a man standing on the platform and pissing

please read the article, there is a link in the first post. the MAN (not a woman) got OFF THE PLATFORM onto the tracks.

Look, this is setting a dangerous precedent. If we all start making opinions on here based upon facts where will it lead us.

Rule 29a clearly states that we are not allowed to engage our brains before beginning to type.

that definitely makes things more interesting. but it also annoys the hell outta some OCD sufferers like myself ha ha (i don't really have ocd, i just act like i do sometimes... there has to be some order and things are supposed to make sense! lol)

Hmmm.... public toilets around Vauxhall are probably best avoided (lots of seedy gay / fettish clubs in that part of town).

People go to those clubs to dance and do drugs but there is nothing seedy about them.
There is also outside urinals at the bus station.

It's not about the voltage. In the UK, the maximum current that can be drawn by a train is over 6000 A, when less than 1A can be fatal for human :(

Just 10 milliamps can kill you if it flows through your heart. Voltage determines how much current goes through you. A car battery has ~500 Amps available, that doesn't mean you'll die if you touch both posts, doubtful you'd even feel anything.

what exactly is an amp compared to a volt, You can easily survive a 50,000 volt stun gun. But apparently the electric chair is really low voltage but high in amps.

really stupid is building not safe 3rd rail. Stupid and cheap.
As a result: "Network Rail says in excess of 60 people die on railway lines,
of which about 40% are electrified, each year...."
There is few manners, well known over all world, to stop such accidents.

No. Stupid is thinking you know better. There are plenty warning signs, if one doesn't pay attention to them then the consequences are obvious.

There is few manners, well known over all world, to stop such accidents.

It's not clear what you are saying. But if you mean there are ways to stop such accidents... I agree. The first one would be not to urinate on the live rail.

“What is wrong with you people! Have some sympathy!”
“The biggest tragedy of civilization in Britain (if you can call it that),
is that stupidity has ceased to be a liability and has instead become
a protected species...”

1) The simplest solution to protect people is switching off power from
3rd rail insulated segment in platform area when they no longer require
power. It should be switched on for short time when the train starts.
2) All third rails should have some sort of protective cover, for example
a plastic snap-on cover that shields the top and sides of the third rail;
3) Should be use different third-rail designs in which trains touch the
bottom of the rail not the top.

“From 2003-2007 there were 256 accidental fatalities on Britain’s railways
(note: this does not include suicides or workforce deaths)
In the last five years one in four accidental fatalities was of someone aged
eight to 18... Railway crime costs the industry £264 million every year. “

Children palying a game of 'Chicken' it wasn't touching the third rail that killed them, it was running out in front a moving train for a dare.
