Polish Gay Life

While things have improved in recent years, it is still tough being gay: a very dear friend of mine who is gay was recently taken out for a drink by his boss, who kept asking "why everyone that he's ever worked with was hinting that he might be a bit different" and that "he wasn't normal, not like his wife and him". None of his fecking business!!

I've been to various pride events in London, Berlin and Montreal, and didn't see any guys having sex in the streets... just a bunch of guys out having a good time and enjoying their freedom not to mention some brilliant music :)

Ive known a Polish Poof (yes, I call him that to his face) since the mid 90s. He is a high profile character and has always been very openly gay. Camp is an understatement. He delights in telling me of his frequent 'exploits' with details more graphic than really needed.

The gay scene is very much alive in Poland but how open people are about it obviously depends on individual circumstances. There seem plenty of gay oriented places to ang out in. If you are so inclined. There also seem to be a number of on line gay networks where people chat to eachother. What they talk about I can only speculate although according to my friend, much of it seems to revolve around the arrangement of 'meetings'

If you say Polish people are so tolerant and nobody's persecuted for being day, make an experiment:
take two guys and make them walk holding hands in the centre of some little Polish town on a Sunday afternoon. Good luck!

There are people who are tolerant and there are milieux where one can be openly gay and have no problems but there are still people who think homosexuality is a disease. Really, you must be careful who you talk to if you want to come out.

A few facts from PL:

A member of Polish gov (who was in charge of children's rights) said that Teletubbies may be dangerous for children to watch because Tinky Winky carries a lady hanbag which implies he's a homosexual. She said she must consult it with a psychologist.

Each year during the Freedom Parade (a gay rights parade) there is a 'counter-parade' of nationalist (i.e. skinhead) organizations. Police has to protect the gay parade from nationalist parade because the skins are very aggressive.

There were cases of teachers who were fired when the headmaster learnt the were gay. The previous minister of education wanted make it illegal for teachers to discuss homosexuality at school.

Many gay people (sorry, I don't have statistics around) reported being harassed and persecuted because of their orientation.

So, it's not so nice as some people may think.

do the same in a centre of a little rural town in england, wales or scotland and same thing will happend. i work in a very english place, where there is no foreigners and they do not pretend to be someone who they aren't.using words:faggot, queer in not a very nice way or saying jokes about gays is an every day thing.people here, won't do anything when they see such a couple but they will have their "opinion".you guys live on clouds level.step down to earth and listen.you may hear something.

let's make an experiment. most of you don't mind gay people and say that it is "normal" to make love with the same sex.simple question;

how many of you would be happy if they siblings or children were gay?

The sad thing is Rafik, that in your mind this is obviously a serious question.

No to gay teachers!
Only mature perons should be involved
They should clothe decently
No to intim gay behaviour in public
Do not offend us, children see it, some old ladies have weak hearts

You gays have to accept that many see you as mentaly ill and endangering the developing of our communities.

BTW:
a decade ago if you saw two guys kissing publicly in Poland you could presume one of them beeing breshnev - theese soviets forced us to do some ill stuff

Your missing the point mate. ANYBODY, no matter what their sexual orientation, they will be overstepping the mark if they perform sexual acts in public. So for you to sugest that they (gay people) have more rights than hetrosexuals is simply not true. If you want to make it illegal for gay people to show affection to each other in public then the same has to happen for "normal" people. Being "gay" isn't about being a pervert like Grzegorz_'s homophobic view suggests. They are normal people with a different sexual orientation. Their parades aren't about recruting young boys, they're about pointing out that they are just normal people who have the right to express themselves. "Gay" which origanally meant happy is an acronym from Good As You.

Sorry but these are things completely foreign to each other...

homophobia is about manliness, which has to be proved by sleeping with women. As I noticed even on this thread, it is the male posters who have problem with men/man relatuionships. It sounds to me that they are threatened and afraind that of they find the male body attractive, they are not man enough. That is why I said it had little to do with sex per se, but more with the fear of one not being manly enough.

Is rollerblading considered unmanly in Poland?
JustysiaS  13 | 2235
29 Jun 2008 /  #49
it depends on the outfit you're wearing with the rollerblades. the more gay it is, the more gay you will be considered.

it depends on the outfit

So I should avoid lycra whilst skating around the park with Grzegorz then... He has an impressive photo collection.
I asked this earlier, not sure if anyone answered... what is Polish for "coming out of the closet"?
miranda
29 Jun 2008 /  #51
"coming out of the closet"?

good question. The direct translation would be: wychodzić z szafy LOL. It really doesn't cut it though. It is an exclusive English term.

wychodzić z szafy

That's what I thought it would be.
In the dictionary I see references to "ujawnić się" to reveal oneself.
