Life / Cultural adaptation in Poland, which stages are you falling into? [11]

Nî hâo, Zhenzhen.
This is a very interesting subject. Here is my favorite level of cultural adaptation: denial.
I especially love when someone refuses to learn the new language and speaks to people from other cultures in his/her own language. If there is a trouble understanding, he/she starts talking... louder! Later they are simply yelling, frustrated that people they are conversing with are sooo stupid. LOL

This subject matter is intended mainly for the so called "first - generation immigrants" or, the way I call them "the boaters" (I can do that, I'm one of them).

Now I know that we all have our own, different and unique experiences with living in the US. These experiences reflect our opinion on the people living in this country. Some of us did great and love this place and the people, some did OK and "sorta-like-it", and some didn't do so well, they went back defeated and they probably did not like it at all.

USA is one of the few countries in the World where you can move to and not feel like a foreigner. If I have had emigrated let's say to Germany I'm sure I would have enjoyed very much their efficient government and a great social system not to mention the fabulous German beer. The only thing is that in Germany I would for ever be thought of as "that Polish guy" and my kids would be thought of as "those kids of that Polish guy". Probably there wouldn't be any malice in that thinking - just a "set of mind". In the US on the contrary, I am considered a "new" American, as long as I am a citizen and speak the language. I think the reason for this is that almost everybody remembers that one grandpa or grandma straight from the old country who spoke with accent and they sympathize with that. It is, after all, "a nation of immigrants" as oppose to let's say Germany, which is a nation of... Germans.

The best thing you can find in here is not money, huge houses, cars, or whatever people outside of US associate this country with. But it is a great place to raise your family. The best in the World.

Am I considered a dual citizen or not? I came here 22 years ago, got my US citizenship and never bothered to extend my polish passport. Am I dual or not?

What if I have no need for and simply don't want the Polish passport?
If one day I decide to visit the Old Country, will I be harassed by the Polish customs at the airport? What if I take my kids with me? Will they be harassed? What about my wife, who carries my last name but does not have a Polish ancestry?

Look. This is a pretty live, well setup, and well thought-up message board. And it's doing rather dissent so far; correct me if I'm wrong. And as far as I know, it's the only one in its class: a Polish Forum for English speakers. The thing is that there is only one PF, and THOUSENTS of other Polish forums on numerous subject in Polish language. And they all SUCK. So please, if it ain't broke, don't fix it?

What is quite interesting is that the strongest and the most solid voting block in the U.S. - the Evangelists - do not have a serious candidate in the Republican Party this time around. Giuliani is a Catholic, Mitt Romney is a Mormon and Hackabee is a Southern Baptist. This may weaken the Republican Party significantly.

Mitt Romney has the biggest problem of the bunch - many Evangelists do not consider Mormon Church to be a Christian religion. That's why his plan is to give a speech on religion in America tomorrow.

I really like Ron Paul's stance on many issues.

Did you know that there are two candidates who promised to abolish IRS? They are Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee. Huckabee would replace the federal tax with a 30% sales tax, and I'm not sure what Ron Paul's plan for that is.

No disrespect to any of you guys, but why does it make such a difference to you which God this or that person believes in? All religions are crazy when you look at them from the "outside", and yet without them the human culture and civilizations would not exist.

Look at us, Christians - we chose the symbol of our Prophet's murder weapon as the symbol of our religion and some of us (Catholics) even perform a ritual cannibalism of our own God!

Does it make you feel any better to dump on the Muslims? For sure you're not going to change anybody's mind, so what's the point?

I was just wondering what xmas dinner was like in Poland

Come to think about it, Polish Christmas is all f-ed up!
We celebrate Christmas one day before Christmas day and we make this huge elaborate dinner with an inedible fish (carp - yuk!) as the main course! Before that, we keep this fish in our bathtub for days! Ooops!

Oh, yeah - there is no Boxing Day - those cheap bastards! :) But if there was one, then I guess it would have to be on the Christmas Day... WTF???

I’d like to get a book or two written by a Polish author. Who are best-selling Polish writers? I could think of only one name: Stanislaw Lem. Lem’s books are available on Amazon, but I don't know which one of his novels would I like? Are there any other authors (I'm sure there are) who are translated into English language?

My standard read is John Grisham, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Tom Clancy - I enjoy crime, horror and action books.

Thanks you guys. I've just ordered Lem's "Solaris" the book and the DVD. Unfortunately Sapkowski's "/Last-Wish-Andrzej-Sapkowski/" (The Witcher Book I) is not yet available. I had to pre-order it - not sure what the release date is going to be. I also looked at "The Hexer" movie, but it had some bad reviews - so I skipped it.

Well, let's see. What would have happened if it wasn't a priest but a teacher instead?
1. A teacher would have immediately lost his/her job.
2. The police would’ve been notified by the school principle - regardless if any witnesses or the parents would have called the cops or not.

3. The authorities would have filed charges and the D.A. would've probably put a PPO on him, where he/she would've been forbidden within a certain distance from any school and/or children gatherings.

That means a move like this would’ve been a career ending move for a teacher.

Now, what do you think will happen to this priest? Depending on the country in which this accident has happened - most likely just a talk in some higher-in-rank priest's office: "Listen, Brother Adolf, we can't do that anymore, these are not the good old days, you know." That is it. No wonder the Catholic Church is on a brink of extinction all over the world!

A little advice for all those who dislike Catholic Church so much. You will avoid all "troubles" if you wont attend masses! One could think that this is obvious for everybody but apparently it is not...

This is precisely why the Catholic Church is on a brink of extinction. Some people leave the Church to join other denominations; many decide to live a secular life. Bad polices of the Catholic Church make it impossible for people to come back. Today I am a member of the Episcopalian Church - although when I was getting married we have also considered the Catholic Church, but it was almost impossible to do- they wanted us to attend classes for a year, jump through many other hoops. I have to say that I don't regret the choice I've made.

What happened was that my wife was from the Evangelical background, but did not want to go back. I am from the Catholic background, but the bad polices of the church made it impossible for me to go back. Today we are members of the Episcopalian Family and very happy about it.

But you're right; there are scandals sometimes in the Church just like anywhere else. The difference is how you deal with them. The Episcopal Church fires its bad preachers. It is just that simple - they get fired, they are out. The Catholic Church on the other hand had a different policy towards its pedophile priests. They, as a matter of a standard policy, just moved the pedophile priests from one diace to another, where the pedophile was free to molest more kids. That's why the Catholic Church in the U.S. is bankrupted today. The point here Slick is not that we don’t have the same problems - but we deal with them better.

I tend to get very cautious when there is a lot of propaganda going on both sides of an issue like this. Without a doubt there is a media war surrounding global warming. For instance, the global warming deniers camp declared (or at list hinted) that there is a reversal of global temperature patterns since 1998 and 2006 was the coolest year since. Then the global warming believers said that the same period was the warmest in the history. Both are probably true statements, because 1998 was the warmest year on record, so you can see that it is easy for both statements to be true. (By the way 2007 was supposedly following the same patterns as previous years).

Examples of media bickering and semantic battles in the Global Warming media war are prodigious. In this climate of propaganda one has to study the issue him/herself, without relying on the talking heads.

I know that I've already talked about this book in this forum, nevertheless I think it's worth mentioning again - the title is Cool it, the author is Bjorn Lomborg. It's an attention-grabbing read.

I am just tired of people not understanding my name, mispronouncing it, and me having to waste time repeating myself.

You don't have to change you’re name legally, simply start introducing yourself as "Marc" or "Martin", and tell people you know that you would prefer to be called Marc from now on. Keep the spelling in your driver license the way it is now, it's easier this way.

just use some marinara sauce out of a jar! Maybe meat flavored? Stuffed cabbage is so much work to boil the cabbage leaves and then roll'em around the meat - make your job easier and use already made marinara sauce!

First, here is a little 101 lesson on how relationships work: (or, to be precise, here is my theory on how relationships work.)

1. A woman will become a carbon copy of her own mother - if you want to see what your wife is going to look like in 20 years, just look at her mother. Is she unhappy? ******? Unstable? This is your wife in 20 years, my friend.

2. A woman will unconsciously look for a husband that reminds her of her own father. Look at her father - does he look and act like you? If he doesn't then she will not stick with you - an infidelity is coming. If you're different from her father, then she chose you for other reasons: i.e. to support her parents financially? In any way, if this is the case, consider your marriage to be practically over.

Life / Six degrees of Kevin Bacon w/ Polish actors [16]

I'm sure that some of you remember a game popular back in the 80's called "The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon". It works like this: someone thinks of an actors/actress' name and you have to connect that actor/actress through movies to Kevin Bacon within 6 steps or less.

I think it would be fun with Polish actors playing on the international scene.
