Life / Local Poles taking advantage of foreigners living in Poland [235]

I just tell you what the situation looks like in Poznań. I don’t know how does it look in Wawa though.

I know 2 people who've passed their test in Wawa by paying the examiner off in advance but that was 5 years ago, it was a standard 1000zl to do it. The examiner was helping them get round the cones and one of the girls knocked a few down and and the examiner was shouting at her 'how the hell am I supposed to pass you if you keep doing that...'

I've heard it is much stricter now though like you say and your only chance to offer the bribe is in the the 30 or so seconds you have with the examiner before you get in the car to do the test.

Work / Relocating to Krakow, Poland from England. How easy to find a job? [94]

Thank you so much for your eloquent and hugely useful contribution to the discussion. As you have nothing to say here might I be so bold as to suggest that you go f**k yourself? Alternatively you can read the relevant laws and point out where I’m wrong.

Are you the same 'Harry' that writes the drivel in NWE each week ?

Language / Common mistakes made by foreigners in Polish [90]

I was trying to say 'ciocia' once and came out with 'ciota' :) It took the Poles I was speaking to about 5 minutes before they could stop laughing and explain what i'd said. Wont be making that mistake again.... :)

Law / Temporary Residence requirements in Poland [12]

Hmm, I can get a copy of my old tax returns, but this isn't really the same as showing that I don't owe any money. I don't think the IRS issues any kind of "no outstanding balance" documents.

Best contact the US consulate in Poland and they will advise you about what document to obtain.

Can someone confirm that this applies only for non-EU citizens?

I have temporary residence in Poland, am from an EU country and didn't have to supply proof about any outstanding tax liabilities I had.

UK, Ireland / Money transfer from Poland to England? [13]

The most cost effective way to do it is to send from a Euro-denominated account in Poland to a Euro-denominated account in the UK.

You would incur two currency exchanges to do it that way though if you are trying to send PLN to GBP , you would have PLN to EUR and then EUR to GBP.

Travel / Bringing laptops to Poland [7]

Anyone know anything about this and / or where I could find out the answer?

look up the duty free allowances for importing good to Poland, if you are coming from outside the EU then it all depends on whether you get stopped by customs or not at the airport.

Also, are these new laptops or your own? If they are your own and you can prove it then there should be no problem.

Love / I got married to a Polish wife; Polish family advice needed [45]

They owe approximately 40,000zl to various loan companies

is the 40,000zl loan secured against any collateral ? Am just wondering if this is really the loan company’s problem rather than the family’s ?

Does anyone know of any polish coarses in Warsaw?

I go to this Polish language school cjp.pl in Warsaw. The course I attend is for two evenings a week, not sure if they do a 2 week course.

Life / Quality and availability of Sky channels in Warsaw [5]

1) What is the quality of the reception on those channels I can get likely to be like?

No different to your Krakow experience i'd imagine, with a modern sky box and a 1m dish correctly alligned the reception quality is excellent.

2) Apart from BBC and ITV (which i understand you can't get without a massive dish), are there any other major channels that won't be available?

E4 but there is a way to get the Irish E4 instead.

3) If i subscribe to Sky Sports and movies, will I get them?! Or will I be wasting my money!?

Yes you can get them and it really depends on your taste as to whether you are wasting your money.

No i won't lose anything,

you will lose, you are the only person I've ever heard trying to say the Polish roads are good, they have improved in the last 2 years but are generally still awful.

News / Poland adopting the Euro, but when? [65]

errrrrm, after seven years of being here with my daughter in and out of hospital so am I :O)

well my experience was having to bribe the head nurse otherwise the patient wouldn't get her bandages changed, filthy wards, toilets and showers in the hospital, being prescribed drugs that are banned in other countries due to adverse affects, doctors prescribing a certain drug because if they did they got payment from the drug company and doctors who can be bribed to write a sick note.

News / Poland adopting the Euro, but when? [65]

It depends where in Poland. Where are you ?

trust me, the roads are terrible but are slowly being improved since Poland joined the EU. I speak for Warsaw and the surrounding area and they seem to be resurficing the roads here one by one. They still have a long way to go and could really do with building some motorways to further the improvements.

News / Poland adopting the Euro, but when? [65]

the medical system - I would say it's on par with the UK system at the moment, if not I hate to say it, slightly better

I take it you are referring to the private care here ? Admittedly the NHS has it's faults but it is simply on a different planet compared to Polish state hospitals, and my opinion is from first hand experience.

Jupiter Centrum on ulica Towarowa has a big baby shop with a range of push chairs. It's very central and not too far from the Sobieski hotel.

UK, Ireland / 13,000 Polish births this year, in the UK [180]

NO we brits who have paid tax all our lives pay for these poles

As your user name suggests you have a slightly biased view. I don't know the facts but if you added up all the tax the Polish immigrants have paid versus the UK services they have used I would guess that the UK has benefited overall.

You've paid tax all your life to fund the dole money for millions of lazy brits who couldn't be arsed to work which is why we needed the immigrants - were you complaining about that before the Poles arrived ?

News / The most useless things in Poland [140]

Electricity sockets that come out the wall when you pull the plug out.
Parking regulations.
ATM machines that only dispense 100zl notes.
Shopkeepers and taxi drivers who react like you've pointed a gun at them when you try to pay with a 100zl note.

Life / Wheres a good spot to play tennis in Warsaw? [8]

where about in Warsaw do you live ? I've played at quite a few places round the city, most surfaces are clay and they put a tent over them in winter. There are couple of indoor places too with hard surfaces.
