Life / Swine flu vaccinations taking place in Poland? [52]

Well , we had the bird flu , which sort of fell out of the news , now this swine flu....I don,t myself intend to rush out and buy any pills or potions , or try to get a flu injection , but i suspect that many people will be thinking its going to be the only way to survive...

Polish people seem to like taking pills for this and that , as has been mentioned on another thread , so i have no doubt that anything that is believed to protect you from this swine flu will be much in demand....

I am pretty sire we are all not in mortal danger from this virus as it is now , but the danger of course is that it could mutate into something more dangerous , in which case , the vacines they have now will not be of any use , even if they do have enough...

The Ukrainians seem to think that this is what may have happened , but it may just be a case of mass hysteria...when all is said and done , there is nothing much that us mere mortals can do about it , so its a waste of time running around in a a panic....

Just keep an eye on the news , keep calm....and if a pig near you sneezes...hold your breath....

USA, Canada / Do you think Americans are idiots. [149]

When you run into American do you think they are idiots,

I didn,t think so...untill i joined this forum....how many potentially good threads wound up being shut down due to some American who believed that only Americans were good enough to draw breath...and that anyone from another nation was worthless...

If they really believe that only Americans deserve to exist on this planet , what are they doing on a Polish forum..why not join an American forum , where they can spend the whole time telling each other how great they are...and we can go back to having inteligent discussions , well apart from the threads i start that is...?

News / A THOUSAND PEOPLE WITH SWINE FLU....just over the Polish border.. [43]

a new swine flu mutation...

Thats what the experts say is the big danger....i fear that the Ukraine does not have the money or expertise to deal with the situation if it turns out to be something deadly....

Another worrying factor......friends of mine living there have told me that the government of Ukraine feel that there are too many people in Ukraine , and would like to reduce the population considerably....maybe they won,t rush to stop this situation killing lots of people...

Food / Horsemeat, anyone? [62]

Some people have little idea what it takes to look after a horse properly...Daughter is mad on horses , so dad buys her one , thinking that its just a matter of putting it in a field and letting it free grass...Little thought is given to how much its going to cost to feed it in the winter , house it , transport it , and pay the huge vets bills if something goes wrong...

I have spent quite a bit of time around these lovely creatures , so have some idea of the hard work involved in owning one...and probably another reason i would not want to eat one....

Black and White minstrels,

Oh god , i can remember that being on the telly in our house as a child...i thought it was pretty boring , but my mum liked it....As a kid i can recall we had a golly among our toys , or to give it the full name , a gollywog...As kids we had no idea it was supposed to represent a black person , and for sure nobody in our house was racist...I grew up in a northern seaside town , we had no negative thoughts about black people , we never saw any , other than on the telly...

Food / Horsemeat, anyone? [62]

For me the issue is about the way the animals are treated not the fact they are killed....In south east Asia they consider anything that moves a source of food , and that is their business , but what i object to is cruel treatment of animals....I have seen film of people skinning a cat alive , and then throwing the still living cat into boiling water..they consider that an animal that has been subject to stress has better flavoured meat....

I would not personally eat horsemeat , and certainly not a dog or cat , but if some people want to do that , and the laws of their country allow it its not for me to object....

I do however feel that any animal should be treated well , and not subjected to any cruelty...even if it is going to be eaten...!

News / A THOUSAND PEOPLE WITH SWINE FLU....just over the Polish border.. [43]

Yawn... Eat onion, drink vodka and don't give a damn...

Now that sounds like good advice....I certainly will not be rushing out to get injections , or fill myself with potions... Like Seanus i feel pretty safe in Poland , and i am not that worried about visiting Ukraine , apart from the fact somebody might panic and the border may close trapping me over there....

I do worry about friends in Ukraine though , i have a good friend in Ternopil , where the worst outbreak seems to have happened , and not so far away in Poltava , another good friend , her sister is already suffering from cancer of the blood due to the Chernobyl accident , a dose of flu would finnish her for sure....

I am not going to panic , i don,t do panic , and would not panic even if there was a real problem , which i am not sure there is...but i reckon the aptekas,s in Poland are going to do good business between now and summer....

News / A THOUSAND PEOPLE WITH SWINE FLU....just over the Polish border.. [43]

Around one thousand people are in hospital with swine flu in Ternopol Ukraine , just over the Polish border , 500 children infected , quite a lot of people dead...

I saw this on the news.pl worries me a little , as i have a good friend in Ternopil that i visited last summer... The Ukrainians are starting to panic , there is a shortage of doctors and medicine , and it seems people are coming over the Polish border to get medicine...

The Polish government is deciding if this could be a problem for Poland...for the moment the border remains open....

No doubt this will cause a lot of Polish people to panic also , but it may be the Ukrainians are suffering due to lower resistance to the virus..one of the effects of the Chernobyl disaster....

Or it could be the virus has mutated into something more deadly....????

Food / Horsemeat, anyone? [62]

I've seen stories on televisions about horses sold to slaughterhouses to sell their meat overseas. The media never mentions it's illegal

I am sure that even if its illegal , there will be criminals willing to do it if it makes money...

Horse meat is illegal in the US.

Horses are special to Americans...its what built the wild west , almost as important as the railroad....can,t see them eating them...!

Food / Smoked carp are of this world! [13]

I can,t say i am a big fan of carp..not that great a taste , and all them bones to sort out....I will eat it at Christmas if i am invited to a Polish home , but i would much rather have a chicken or a turkey on my plate...

You would think that being born in a town by the sea , i might be into seafood , but not at all into it , apart from Scarborough fish and chips of course...

For me taking a powerful rifle with scope out in the hills isn't hunting - its shooting

I have to say i didn,t see any real skill in shooting an animal that has been driven into the path of the hunters by groups of beaters...These guys had high powered rifles with telescopic sights...i reckon i could have brought down the boars with a bow and arrow at the ranges they were shooting from....

But as i say...i don,t strongly object to it , as long as its done properly , strictly controlled , and with minimum suffering to the animals...it does pee me off a bit that they can legally come onto my land to shoot animals...mind you , once the Harley has been fired up there are no animals around to shoot at....ooopsss

Food / Horsemeat, anyone? [62]

anyone on the board killed an animal, gutted it, cooked it

well almost...not long after i moved to Poland i was asked to help with transporting a group of Danish hunters around the forest...This was a properly licenced hunt organised by the Polish hunting association.... I owned a 4 x 4 , which is what you need for driving in a muddy forest in winter...

I am not a hunter , never have been , and the idea of shooting something just to put its head on my wall is not my thing , i am quite prepared to kill an animal if i am starving to death , the animal is about to eat me , or to put it out of its misery if its in pain and cannot be helped...but for fun...no..

I am not violently against hunting , its an old and noble sport , and in Poland the hunters are the ones that are largely responsible for the carefull management of the forest and its animals , so provide a great service....

As i was rather skint , i decided to provide transport to these hunters , the pay was rather good , and i decided that if i was going to go around saying hunting was not for me then i at least ought to be there and see what its all about... I was very close to the animals as they were shot , mostly wild boar , a few deer , and a fox... i was also close by as they gutted the animals right after killing , and later had some nice soup made with wild boar meat in it...found it a bit on the chewy side....

The best part of the hunt for me was being so close to the wild animals , and having the pleasure of those that escaped the guns run right past me....

I prefer to shoot the wildlife around my farm......with a camera..
