News / Polish government punishes charitable givers [25]

Yeah ok that was an intellegent statement. Thanks.

Opts, being in the US you know that we have many disabled veterans that don't get enough gov't support and have ro resort to handouts. How else would some of these people survive? I can understand what you're saying and I know that a lot of abled people are out there getting these handouts when infact they can work, but not everyone can.

Once they learn the ropes it becomes easy for them. Free food, blankets, doctors, social workers, a place to go for a shower and more. There is little incentive to work.

This is very true. I see it every day in NYC. These people should be round up and put to work for the state/govt for low wages so they don't have to sit around and get used to it. Why overpay a state worker to paint lines on the streets, pick up garbage..general labor.

Yeah, here people who get welfare have a second child to receive more $$ from the govt even though they can't even afford to eat themselves. Greedy bastards.

Yeah lets form a police state and round up these people.. bring back stalin and hitler hmmmmmmmm

Not exactly what I had in mind. It would be for those who have been discouraged with finding a job and it would give them something to do. I talked with many homeless in NYC and 80% of them have told me the same story about constantly being turned down for work and they ed up giving up. So, with an opportunity to be given work every day for wages..and no not against will, can get them into a working habit again and boot their moral.

Maybe then we can rid our country of illegal Mexicans who use our health care.

I find it hard to believe.

Well, come to NYC and ask for yourself. Wroclaw is correct by saying that they need a place to live in order to be employed. Also, many jobs here in the US require you to have good credit.

Life / Whats driving like in Poland? [70]

HWY 10 isn't so good in PL. Saw a few British autos wile driving down from Chłopy and they had the most difficult time passing due to the driver being on the wrong side. Quite funny to watch :)

Travel / Traveling to Poznan [16]

I'll be in Poznan around the same time. It's going to be cold :) I was there this past Feb and it was below 0.

Is $6000 USD going to be (comfortable) enough for 2 months? (I like to drink every once in a while ;-) Irish/American heritage :P)

It should be enough. What will your living arrangement be? Beer and food are cheap.

Is it safe to fly out there during the winter months?

Yes. It's safe. If you're looking for trouble in the late evening, you can easily find it though....just like anywhere. There are a lot of young people in Poznan so there are a few fights here and there. One of the safer cities in my opinion.

Can anybody give me some personal insight on Poznan and what to expect?

After travelling to PL a few times I was fortunate enough to be able to see different cities all over the country and Poznan happens to be one of my favorites. In the winter months it might not be as exciting as the summer. There will be less people and the beer gardens won't be open....but many places to grab a cold one.

The escalators are there so you don't have to walk up the stairs. What's the friggin rush anyway? It'll only take 2 more minures to stand and wait :)

....but not moving when asked is quite rude.

News / Darwins theory of Evolution in Polish schools [59]

Poland's deputy education minister called for the influential evolutionary theories of Charles Darwin not to be taught in the country's schools, branding them "lies."

Orzechowski called for a debate on whether Darwin's theory should be taught in schools.

"We should not teach lies, just as we should not teach bad instead of good, or ugliness instead of beauty," he said. "We are not going to withdraw (Darwin's theory) from the school books, but we should start to discuss it."

Here's the link for the full article: uk.news.yahoo/14102006/323/keep-darwin-s-lies-polish-schools-educa tion-official.html

So, ontop of the current protests in Warsaw to remove the Pis party, there's also protests for this? Warsaw must be busy nowadays. Anyone been there recently?

How do you all think about this? I think it should be taught. It's only a theory and these kids can make their own conclusions. Hasn't done anyone else harm.

Drive with your lights on. Especially when there's a lot of passing going on. Also, some of the streets are lined with trees. It's like tree ally..don't know why they do this, so it's good to have them on so others can see you.

It'll be interesting if you've never driven there :)

'Mum was forced to work as sex slave'
Jury told that friends from Poland were threatened into prostitution

by Rod Hopkinson
A POLISH married mum sobbed as she told a jury how she was forced to have sex after being promised bar work in England.
The 27-year-old woman had flown to England months earlier with a woman friend to earn money to improve their life, Leeds Crown Court was told.

But they were then allegedly both forced to work as sex slaves in a brothel in a parade of shops in Town Street, Armley, Leeds.

Grzegorz Szydlowski allegedly conned the women into believing they would be doing honest work.
But, claimed the prosecution, his intention was always to make them work as prostitutes.
Airport
"He collected them from Liverpool airport last June and set them up in a flat in Leeds – providing food and accommodation," said Richard Woolfall, prosecuting.

"He then threatened them and used violence to make them work in the brothel in Armley and made them pay him £200 a week. He also took other money from them when he could find it."

The two victims, the court heard, were reliant on him and afraid of him said Mr Woolfall who added: "He controlled them and they were so frightened they did as he wanted."

When they were driven to the flat in Longroyd Avenue, Beeston, Leeds, another Polish man was present.
The mum, who can't be named for legal reasons, said Szydlowski's friend forced her into having sex five times during her stay at the flat.

Giving evidence through an interpreter, the woman broke down saying: "He knew I wasn't consenting. I tried to stop him but he was a big man, heavily built. I couldn't do a lot."

Denial
Szydlowski, 25, has denied two offences of bringing the women to the UK for sexual exploitation between May and June this year.
He has also pleaded not guilty to two further offences of intentionally arranging them to work as prostitutes.
The woman managed to contact her husband in Poland – who had agreed she would have a better chance of earning money if she went to England – and she told him she and her friend had been beaten and threatened into working in the brothel.

Police became involved and when Szydlowski was interviewed after his arrest he claimed the women wanted to work as masseurs because they had done it before.

He also said he was never aggressive towards the women or threatened them.

It is definitely sad. Aparantly there a lot of Albanians doing this. Scumbags.

Aren't Albanians muslims? Just another negative thing some muslims bring to the table. It makes all muslims look bad between this and terrorism. I don't say this about all because I have a few muslim friends and they're the kindest people.

Food / Any Polish Christmas Recipes? [32]

I don't think that it's very hard to say merry Christmas, happy Hanukah, etc... But if people have no problem with this situation, than it's fine I think.

This is also corporate. So, you're dealing with thousands of people. For a large company it would be too time consuming to tend to each groups needs so it's simplified. Personally I don't care. But it seems like there are many who do, and they'll complain or even file a grievance. It's mostly the people that don't celebrate christmas that care so much.

I can understand that. But if I were placed in such a position I would still wish people merry Christmas. It doesn't cost you anything.

I totally agree. If you happen not to be Catholic...just say so :) people are so damn sensitive about everything these days.
