Travel / Small Baltic coast places - where to stay ? [25]

Hello,

I'll go back to Poland in July. I'm planning to stay a few days on the Baltic coast then I'll drive to Mazury near the lake Sniardwy.

For my stay in Mazury, my hotel is already booked but for my stay on the coast, I still haven't made my choice.

1. Would you rather recommend the western part of the coast (near Kolobrzeg for example) or the eastern part (near Gdansk) in order to get the best weather, water and beach ?

2. Which place would you recommend to stay ? I'm looking for a small place. On maps, I can spot places like Rowy, Ustka, Leba. Is it actually possible to stay there (are there any hotels) ?

Thank you

Life / Things to be afraid of in Poland? [109]

If you've got a very nice car, you should keep an eye on it in Poland (especially near the Eastern border).

That, actually, is interesting. I'll go by myself to Mazury for a few days this summer and would like to know the risks. I'll stay in a hotel in Pisz and will drive to visit a few corners like Mragowo, Gizycko... What do you recommend doing more than you would in Western Europe to reduce the risks of theft?

Language / Confusion about genitive plural [30]

Merged: Genitive plural of "mur" (the wall)

In nominative, the plural is "murzy" but in genitive, does the r -> rz conversion remain and does it also end with "y" ?

Is there a rule where the alterations from singular to plural in nominative case remain in other cases?

Thanks

Language / Confusion about genitive plural [30]

I was confusing. The "r -> rz" alteration only occurs with "animated male" nouns. Inanimated male nouns do not change. Indeed so says my Polish lessons book.

Thanks Magdalena for forcing me to review it ;-)

Travel / How is the road from Berlin to Warsaw then to Mazury ? [6]

I'll be driving to Mazury next week and I still hesitate on which way to go.

Would you recommend driving until Warsaw then driving north to Mazury, or leave the highway to Warsaw earlier for a more direct route?

(my first time driving in that part of Poland)

What's the quality of the roads? Which way would be shortest?

Travel / How is the road from Berlin to Warsaw then to Mazury ? [6]

Actually I will follow the highway from (near) Berlin and I go to the south of Mazury (Pisz).

Online services I consulted, and my GPS, recommend going through/by Warsaw, but they all render different durations and different average speeds for the parts of the trip starting near Mazowiecka so I'm a bit confused as to which way exactly I should take to get the shortest trip.

Thanks ;-)

Travel / How is the road from Berlin to Warsaw then to Mazury ? [6]

So, I'm back from my trip and put the story here so it may help others.

From Berlin I drove east and stopped at Poznan for a night. Next day I went on towards Warsaw, past 2 toll payments (11 zl. each) then miles before Warsawa I followed the recommendations of my GPS, left the highway and started driving north-east towards Mazury.

I can't remeber the names of the cities and villages I went through but all roads were in good state. They had been restored. The only annoyance were Lithuanian truck drivers who drive like crazy on those small roads, skipping cars in front of them, while another car is already visible coming the opposite way. Creepy.

I stayed a few days in Pisz. One day I drove to Ketrzyn (and from there to Swieta Lipka and Gierloz). So I took the road from Pisz to Ketrzyn, going through Mikolajki and Mragowo. It's a good road as well. No problem.

After my stay in Mazury I drove to Krakow. I went through Warsaw, then stopped at Kielce for lunch. Good highway ans smaller roads as well.

Language / "just" and "either" in Polish [17]

Hello,

I wanted to know how to express the concepts of "just" and "either" in phrases like these ones, for example:

"I just came back home"
"I just wanted to say [...]"

"It didn't rain but there was no sun either"

Merged: Najwyżej

"Najwyżej"

Is this an adverb or a superlative ?
Probably a superlative but from which adjective does this come from ?

Thank you

Travel / Staying in Krakow at the Pollera hotel, 100 euro a night [14]

I stayed twice at IBIS CENTRUM, few minutes walk from Rynek Glowny.
Very good although it has the lack of personality of each international chain.
ibishotel.com/gb/home/index.shtml

It's cheaper though than your 100eur hotel.

And there are indeed much cheaper Polish hotels or pensions but I don't personally know any.

Language / Adjective and adverb comparison [19]

In my case, the word was used in the following phrase, which I still don't quite understand :-)

"Najwyżej będziecie się promiennie uśmiechać"

[Najwyżej] you will smile radiantly to each other

Love / Polish Catholic & Jewish Love Relationships [9]

Yes. That's what I observed as well. As far as I'm concerned, I deliberately chose to always stay on my "cultural territory" and only date women matching my ethnic, religious and social origins to reduce the causes for failure. I wouldn't like to be dumped by somebody who suddenly realizes that I'm not the appropriate partner because she is submitted to social pressure. It's naive to think that love saves everything...

Language / Confusion about genitive plural [30]

Merged: Genitive plural of female and neuter nouns

Hello,

I have a constant problem when building the plural form of female and neuter nouns in dopełniacz. For example, sometimes it consists of removing the final letter of the original word, sometimes there is an ending in "-ek". I don't understand exactly how to choose the appropriate ending. Are there specific rules?

Thanks.

News / Phone numbers in Poland - should I add a ZERO ? [11]

Hi,

I have the mobile phone number of a few people in Poland and they are entered in my phone list as +48xxxxxxxxx. For example, a friend with mobile provider "area" code 607 is entered as +48607xxxxxx.

I want to know, when I'm in Poland, of course I don't need to dial +48. but Should I add a ZERO before 607 (so I would have to dial 0607)? It is the case in several countries but is it also the case in Poland? Or can I just dial 607xxxxxx?

Thanks in advance.

Aren't Polish city codes 2-digit numbers, so 607 would be wrong?

607 is a mobile phone provider. They are usually 3-digit. Another friend has 503 and another one has 667.

History / Boże Coś Polskę - Polish Hymn [10]

Does anyone know of an mp3 link where we can download "Boże Coś Polskę" without having to download a unique program

Eva, on the download page MacCoy mentioned, just click on "tutaj" in the text for the description. It will allow you to save the file directly. That's how I got it.

Language / wysłać SMS-a / SMS-y [15]

Hello,

On this form there is a good article on how to apply endings to foreign names, using apostrophe: polishforums.com/applying_declensions_english-18_29194_0.html

I'm wondering what the rule is when adding a "minus" sign between a name made of initials and its ending, like in the example I wrote :

"wysłać SMS-a" (-y for plural)

Thanks

Language / wysłać SMS-a / SMS-y [15]

yes, because you have to think deeply between SMS and 'y'.... ;)

LOL. Yeah, even I got it ;-)

Thanks for the replies, but it's not really the answer to my question. What is the rule to use a myślnik between a word and its ending when declined?

Cheers ;-)

Language / wysłać SMS-a / SMS-y [15]

Krzysztof,

Thanks for this very comprehensive comment. I was indeed surprised that words such as "mail" and "SMS" should be applied the "-a" ending in the biernik case, as they are not animate things. My Polish friend couldn't find any explanation for that and just told me "well, that's how we write them anyway". So, it is just a change in modern language.

Language / Which case for adjectives? [47]

Merged: declension of wszyscy

Hello,

My grammar book only gives one form for each case:
M = wszyscy
D = wszystkich
C = wszystkim
B = wszystkich
N = wszystkimi
M = wszystkich

Isn't there a second form "wszystkie" to be used at mianownik and biernik only, for elements belonging to the "non-person male, female, neuter" category?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply.

Maybe it's not "wszystkie". It's "wszysce". I believe that I've read it in a text some time ago. But if you confirm there is no second form then you're probably right. I must have been confusing...

Language / WILL "TĄ" REPLACE "TĘ" SOON? [14]

By the way, I'd like to take the opportunity to ask if the biernik declension for "tamten" (feminine singular) has the same ending: "tamtę" (instead of "tamtą" you would normally expect there). Thanks.

Language / WILL "TĄ" REPLACE "TĘ" SOON? [14]

May I hack this thread again to ask one more thing about "ten vs. tamten" ?

For "ten", nominative and accusative of singular neuter is "to".
For "tamten", is it "tamto" or does it follow the regular ending, hence "tamte" ?

Thanks in advance,
