News / All this mess about Danzig... [122]

Being a trifle hypocritical, aren't we?

Nope, I'm not.
I've seen lots of people on the forum react this way.
It appears to be a part of human nature.
I was merely pointing out an observation.
I was not implying a personal judgment one way or the other.

Let's see now, as for the volley swinging, whose serve is it?

You infer that BB's by nature NOT so gentle, therefore little is needed to set him off, eh?

Let's put it this way, Bratski is a happy, easy going person 99.9% of the time, but if you mindlessly and thoughtlessly rattle off crap, he will be happy to set you straight. And yes, his tolerance for crap is low, especially if you piss on his beloved Prussia, and his temper can flash, but he cools off equally fast and returns to his jolly, happy self.

Okay guys and gals....I'm running out of smilies...back to the topic!

Pffft! You have more smileys than ANYBODY! hehe :)

How about this; he's practicing his English. He'll never be like a native speaker.

Hmmmm...
How about if you throw some of your German out here and let Bratski check YOUR grammar and phrasing.

Plus, BB only gives back as good as he gets.
Don't piss him off and he won't return the favor.

No Bratwurst Boy, IT'S EVEN WORSE!!!

Now, now .......that's just not true.
Bratski has a fabulous vocabulary in English, better than many native speakers.....so he might might an occasional grammar mistake, but grammar is the most difficult part of learning any other language.

USA, Canada / US auto bailout [49]

Last time they went to congress they flew in on their private lear jets to ask for taxpayers money.

And that was absolutely ridiculous.
There was an estimate given that it cost 20,000.00 to fire up the company jet, when they could have booked coach tickets for 800.00. The problem with Corporate America boils down to one word: greed.

Travel / Walks up the Beskids mountains [44]

Watch out for bears out there!
They still exist in some parts.

Bear pulls man out of tree in Polish mountains

A bear pulled a man out of a tree in the Polish mountains on Sunday and fractured his arm, the Polish news agency PAP reported from the south-eastern town of Krosno.

The 20-year old man also had a fractured finger and other minor injuries as a result of the attack in the Bieszczady Mountains, the agency said, without explaining what he was doing up the tree in the first place.

Food / Potato cake with bacon? Placki ziemniaczane. [14]

Here is one:

* 3/4 pound (1 large) russet (baking) potato
* 2 slices of cooked lean bacon, crumbled fine
* 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives or green part of scallion
* 2 tablespoons olive oil
* sour cream as an accompaniment if desired

Preparation

Peel the potato, grate it coarse, and press it between several thicknesses of paper towel to remove any excess moisture. In a bowl stir together the potato, the bacon, the chives, and salt and pepper to taste. In a large heavy skillet heat the oil over moderately high heat until it is hot but not smoking, form the potato mixture into 4 patties, and cook the patties, tamping them down with a spatula, for 5 to 7 minutes on each side, or until the pancakes are golden brown and cooked through. Serve the pancakes with the sour cream.

(I think you might have to add some oil into the mixture if you plan to bake it.....probably for 400 degrees for 45 minutes)

History / German POWs after WW2 - did the allies commit mass murder? [228]

only that they were another American citizen who went because he had to..

Exactly my thoughts!

Seanus does not get this. All he can see is the current involvements of our military and his condemnation of the reason to be there. He does not understand that America's mourning for loved ones lost in battle is a personal matter, not a political one. He is confused bout what it means to us.

Very sad.

I find it pathetic when America hails its war veterans.

What the hell?
What is wrong with remembering those you gave their lives to defend their country? You do realize the Veterans Day is on Tuesday in the US?

What about all these poor kids coming back from Iraq, permanently disabled. You say we should appreciate them for their sacrifice? Or you think we should condemn them for having been deployed there?

Seanus, please think before you type.

News / Candidate of "Hope and Change," Breaks Promise, Leaves Poland Defenseless [47]

"His position is as it was throughout the campaign, that he supports deploying a missile defence system when the technology is proved to be workable," Mr McDonough told the Associated Press.

In the past, Mr Obama has said he wants to review the plans for a missile defence system in central Europe to ensure it would be effective and not target Russia.

That's not what it sounds like to me.....

History / Sarmatia Europe - Could it be political reality? [183]

Well..I see online votings as a quite easy thing...:)

I think so too......as more and more people use online services, I think it would not be so difficult to verify identity and make a vote secure. Just because something has not worked in the past, or if the technology is not there to support it now, does not mean it can't be there in the future. "where there is a will, there is a way" so to speak.

Slavic countries are a part of Europe, you are right Osiol! I agree with what you just said. I don't know why everything has to be a pissing contest of one sort or the other.

History / Sarmatia Europe - Could it be political reality? [183]

I would prefer a more direct democracy which works through referendum and petition, where only people can take part in which can show through a test that they have enough knowledge to make a judgement.

I like that idea! Put government in the hands of the people....and make sure they can make responsible decisions.

Not by those who actually have lived in Germany.

URL

Southern, everything said against Germany in the forum (the url you provided) has been said also about Poland. (dog poop on streets, people don't smile, not tolerant of outsiders). So I'm not getting what your point was......?

Love / Teenage Relationship - girls from Poland walking next to you? [40]

But if they could avoid...it will benefit them.

Why do you think so?
This is the first practice a young person gets to build those kind of social skills....to figure out what he/she values in in a relationship or a partner. How else can a young person grow into an adult with out being clueless of personal wants and needs?

Just want to see what you are on about....

News / US DOLLAR = 2.47 on 2 Oct 2008? [54]

quality of life is different here. the freedom here means anything goes not that you have more quality time necessarily.

I think life is more expensive here. There is less free time.
In Europe more businesses are closed Sundays, holidays, and not "open all night". Here we have so many cities that never sleep, 24 hour operations......no rest for consumers or the weary.

personal opinion why america will be back on top soon enough

I think Americans have an interesting ability to overcome obstacles when united in a cause....maybe in a way that other peoples don't.....but they have to be spurred on, and it helps to have solid leadership.

We just haven't had that leadership.
I am glad to see a concensus developing in the US to get control of the greed at the helm of our corporations. I caught a lit bit of the oversight hearing, grilling the CEO of Lehman Brothers. It was a beautiful thing.

News / US DOLLAR = 2.47 on 2 Oct 2008? [54]

In fact American employers became so scared of that "goodness" that they keep sending American jobs to China.

ZD, take a look at this article. Its a few years ago, but a good point is made here:

Asked about the impact of such a policy, weeks before it became law, Lee said outsourcing of jobs was unstoppable. "Suppose the Americans forbid this - 'You can't outsource' - but the Japanese, Germans, British, French outsource, so their goods and services are cheaper. If you deprive yourself of outsourcing and your competitors do not, you're putting yourself out of business. I see this opposition as a roadblock to slow it down, but it is unable to stop the forces that drive the economy. Economic forces are let loose and are not stoppable unless all the developed countries agree they will not outsource. Why should they agree?"
