News / Should Poland let in refugees from USA ? [80]

In the late 90's you never would have seen commericals like that.

Maybe somebody believes they made out like bandits on their increased home values!

In food stamps you mean?

They can be sold. I think Acorn has a pamphlet on how to do that too, no?

History / Another WWII thread. [69]

All people domiciled in Canada, whether Canadian citizens or not, pay identical taxes.

Not quite right, Harry.

Federal tax rates for 2009 are:
·15% on the first $40,726 of taxable income, +
·22% on the next $40,726 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income between $40,726 and $81,452), +
·26% on the next $44,812 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income between $81,452 and $126,264), +
·29% of taxable income over $126,264.

So all Canadians do not pay identical taxes. To further complicate matters, depending on where you live, the provinces then take their cuts:

Provincial/Territorialtax rates for 2009
Ontario:
6.05% on the first $36,848 of taxable income, +
9.15% on the next $36,850, +
11.16% on the amount over $73,698

British Columbia:
5.06% on the first $35,716 of taxable income, +
7.7% on the next $35,717, +
10.5% on the next $10,581, +
12.29% on the next $17,574, +
14.7% on the amount over $99,588

Love / Proposing to my Polish girlfriend [33]

Supposedly, a nice engagement ring should cost in the range of a three-month salary.

Again, this is propaganda issued by the diamond conglomerates!

Don't forget, you can always go back and upgrade the diamond in a few years. Go for the style of the ring (with space for a future upgrade in mind?).

You may actually be able to buy a really nice engagement ring at a pawn shop.

Come on Beckski! If the guy of your dreams got down on his knee and presented you with a slightly used ring, you would be OK with that?

"Uh, yeah sweetie, it was in the scratch and dent section, but it was lovely in it's day!"

I also pointed out that pawn shops also have new, unused rings available for purchase

Yeah, but I purposely (like many on here) ignored that fact based on my ability to slam you for the other part of your statement!

:-)

A family heirloom one would be cool though, as long as it was in your family....

3-month salary worth just in case he dumps you... and you collect quite a cash in a pawn shop?

Not really. Rings are over valued compared to their "scrap value" (selling for the value of the diamond and the gold). You are paying quite a bit for the "artistry" of crafting the ring. So, you don't ever really get what he paid for it.

I think I got more value out of my $25 marriage licence, than I ever would for the ring though.

Language / How does Polish sound to you? How to make Polish sound more pleasurable? [100]

How to make Polish sound more pleasurable?

And exactly how do you plan on getting about 40 million Poles to agree on changing it? Languages can morph over time, but I think a concerted effort to change it would likely fail.

I like watching my wife talk in Polish on the phone to friends and family. Her nose moves in such a cute way when she talks Polish. If you change it, the cute nose movements will probably disappear!

Food / Video's showing how to make certain Polish foods. [13]

That looks like a lot of work, but well worth the effort. However, I think that unless you have an "expert" by your side, it would be easy to screw up the consistency of the ciastko na pierogi (sp?). Too loose and there are problems, too dry and you have a different set of problems. How exactly do you know how thick to roll it?

Otherwise, it was an enjoyable video to watch, with a great sense of humor injected by the participants! One thumb up from me!

Language / How does Polish sound to you? How to make Polish sound more pleasurable? [100]

one moves the nostrils quite a lot when doing some of the Polish sounds.

I think it is related to getting the tongue and palate in the proper way to pronounce the rz, sz, cz, dz, ż, ś, ń, ę sounds.

For me, I still find it hard to discern the differences between some of them when compared side by side.

Life / Pre Paid Visa cards [27]

Maybe some organizations don't accept Visa? Also, it would be one way to build a credit history with the banks. Showing restraint and being able to pay off (top up) the balance on a regular basis is one way to build the history. After all, you know those bankers, can't be too careful.

USA, Canada / Sweetest Day - October 18 - 19 [36]

First time I heard of it was in Detroit 14 years ago.... I thought it was a rip off as well.

I don't celebrate it.

USA, Canada / Sweetest Day - October 18 - 19 [36]

Soon the TV bombardment will begin

Not here in Canada. Not advertised at all.

Edit: Must be our exemplary border guards, keeping the riff raff where it belongs ;-)

Food / Where is the best place to eat pierogi in Poland? [24]

Krakow, their speciality appears to be drowning them in oil :/

I like to fry about a pound of bacon, save the oil, then when the pierogies are boiled, thow them in the bacon fat, and cook until golden brown. If they happen to soak up a little oil, so be it.

Yum!

Work / Moving to Poland from Canada [17]

I think Mississauga has the largest contingent of Poles. It seem most of the Poles in Roncessvales are in the Babcia Brigade.

Ahh, you know the Queen Mother hangs above your bed. Lol.

I thought I heard the cat growling at something the other night....

Food / Recipe for Kotlet Schabowy (in English) [15]

Maybe (if you fry in butter or smalec) add a little water to the pan. I've seen that done here and though it sounds odd, it works.

The Matka in Law used to finish up with the frying (not even sure if it was 100% cooked through, but I would make sure it is) and then take them out of the frying pan, and put them in a pan with a bit of water and let them all simmer for a brief time. Not crispy by any stretch of the imagination, but tender as a love poem, and the sauce went necely on the 'tatoes.

Edit: Be sure to post some pictures!

News / Why are Polish politicians so bad at accepting bribes? [17]

I ran into a politician in Poland. She wouldn't let me use the loo unless I greased her palm with a zloty, she was so insistent on it. It went against my morals, but I coughed up because it was urgent.
