Language / The letter combo "ch" and a thing about "ść" [11]

The best way to explain Polish ch pronuncaiton to Brits is to cite the Scottish loch.

But even the Brits can't pronounce the ch in Loch properly.

Real Estate / Prices of apartments in Krakow are collapsing further down in 2010-2011 [150]

From my point of view, I would say that this year was the busiest when it came to foreigners coming to Krakow. A lot more than the previous year anyway.

More and more international business' have been more willing than usual to employ foreigners. In the beginning they hardly touched us, but slower it's starting to dawn on them that when dealing with certain countries it's better to have some kind of common link between other than just the product or accounting.

Travel / New Year's Eve in Warsaw. How to spend it? [26]

In Prudnik it was nothing as it was a friend of a friends place.

Roznow cost us about 30pln for the 2 nights, 10 people in total, 300pln, in or around that figure.

I wouldn't have a clue, but I can imagine some of them would be a little fecked up like that :D
Ha! too slow for me then mods :P

I will be in Krakow any suggestion for there ;).

The whole time I stayed in Krakow I only once stayed in the city for New Year. And that was at my ex's very boring friends who looked shocked when I brought alcohol, then forced me into playing board games!!

Normally we would rent out a chalet somewhere near Roznow or go to Prudnik :)

Life / grrrr... internet issues (or customer service issues) with TP SA [14]

delphiandomine

I wanted to challenge you on this earlier, but unfortunately I had to deal with other things.
How exactly can your business be a relocation firm but understand feck all about the system?
You take alot of money from those who put their trust in you, yet u say u can deal with people moving to Poznan or Krakow, but forget that these two cities are totally different and that the ways to go about business are totally different too.

Life / Consider going back to Poland? [90]

have you gone back to Poland?

Not yet, looking at heading back just before summer.

And just because you came to Poland four or five years ago whilst looking for some notion of home (because of Polish roots or whatever)

I think you miss understood. I didn't have any roots in Poland to start with.

Life / Consider going back to Poland? [90]

Their seems to be plenty of ex-pats who are now living away from home in Poland, and quite a few Poles living in other countries.

So it is with this point that I just wondered how many of you would consider your adopted place as home? How many want to go back to where you came from? If you had to go back, what would it take for that to happen? And lastly If you dont want to go back why not?

I'm not talking about immigration or all that bull crap. I'll give my own experience as an example. I lived in Poland for almost 5 years, and in a blind moment I decided to come back to the UK for various reasons, but one reason was just out of curiosity to see whether or not I had that old feeling of being home again. Which in a very short time I realised that strangely enough, It felt nothing like home and in fact I now feel like I have left home.

So shout up guys and girls, what keeps you in the place you are in, and if you could, would you change it?

Work / Some details about Teaching in Poland [51]

I will continue this convo tomorrow, as my cousin has now made me quite tipsy. Plus I will speak to you about your relocation plans. Superb idea, I done the same thing a few years ago. But had no time to keep it going though it was quite successful. I'll PM u.

Work / Some details about Teaching in Poland [51]

At least from the Callan/Avalon/whatever method point of view

Im quite defensive about callan cos i believe if a student is learning from book 1 or a complete beginner then this is a helpful method. The amount of vocab they learn in such a short period of time is a good thing. BUT and a big but at that, is the fact this method is outdated and boring after book 2. After that they should move to direct or traditional methods. Something the teachers can use a bit of creativity with.

I think most teachers are more than capable to be honest - okay

Most teachers are, but im coming from the point of view in Krakow, where there are so many school and they will hire any native.

Saying that I strongly do believe that before any teacher takes their first lessons, the school should train them properly. Not this observation ****, but slowly start to include the new teacher into lessons.

On another note, i remember my first ever lesson. 5-6 years ago I got the job just by walking through the door. They threw me right in the deep end. No training, no help, just take this lesson now. 5 mins into the lesson I walked out telling myself "feck this ****". But still im here ;)

but the director.

That's a good point, but they as all businessmen are looking at it maybe from a money making way. As in their school only has one teaching method so sod it, if anyone comes in here we have to sell this method. Something I never understood was why schools stick to a single method teaching approach. Ok i understand that it could take training to get a teacher to move from method to another, but with enough practice and help, it can be easily done.

As teachers we aren't the ones who know best when it comes to what methods we use. We can advise but ultimately its the student who decides. If the method they choose turns out good or bad for them, then it is an on going educational process. At the end of the day (i fecking hate that saying btw) its our jobs to pass on info to whoever we teach. Whether one method is better or not is hardly the matter. BUT as teachers we should be able to cover all those bases.

News / ENGLISH STILL PROFITABLE IN POLAND? [78]

Thats the point, me, you and delph can look after ourselves after being there and done it. But I was thinking more for those who are just starting ect.

But maybe your right, you just have to learn from ur mistakes and make sure it doesnt happen again.

Do you include summer months too? Forgive me my enquiry, not that I am curious about your annual earnings, not at all, but I just would like to learn the counting technique of a Westerner.

I have been lucky that the schools I worked at have been open all year round so wages were constant. But if the school did close over the summer months I would be looking to be paid extra to cover the expenses over those months.
