News / Polish transfer of Family Estate in Will? [14]

Yes you should. I just checked with a very good (Polish) real estate lawyer and the advice is that a gift of property before the death of the giftor can not be challenged after their death by any of the necessary heirs.

Thank you. This is definately what I want to be done. Tata set it up a will in June. I would prefer to take care of Estate transfer now. Past experience, nightmare later. Now, a new roof and maintenance needs to be taken care of. If I will be paying into the home, other options need to be secured.

That's excellent news for the OP. We wanted to spend money developing the "family home", which I was unwilling to do if I would then have to pay inheritance tax on it. So we had the parents gift it to us several years ago (although it ended up being their suggestion, so that worked out best).

Thanks, your situation is very similiar to mine now. It appears we will be having work done on the 'family home'. Quotes are being sought. We trust and love each other. That would delete the inheritance tax..

History / Who lost WWII (besides Poland)? [42]

'actually yes, your right in one sense, why not look forward (or more positively) than in this continual negative fashion' I've just been down to the bookies for the odds.....................

Funny...

Nothing can be done about the past yet you still bang on about it so much, its like Poland has nothing else to offer apart from a few sad stories and 'victimisation claims'

True! A fitting quote came to mind..

" I like the dreams of the future
better than the history of the past". -Thomas Jefferson

Love / Proposing to my Polish girlfriend [33]

Express your love. Choose what is fitting for you. There is no price on an engagement ring. Naturally, you should gravitate toward a ring that expresses your relationship and your commitment to each other.

Life / How much cash to give as a wedding gift? [25]

Is this a true Polish Custom to give money? Money is typically given by immediate family only in my experience. A registry is usually established with the couples needs. This eliminates the 10 Fondue Sets. The couple establishes their needs of China, Silver, down to linens.

Life / How much cash to give as a wedding gift? [25]

Bottom line: The Bride and Groom have invited you as GUESTS. There is no stipulation as to a gift. Use your own guidelines and common sense. Weddings are either traditional or not. Depends, on the wedding your going to? What are the traditions in Poland?

Language / How does Polish sound to you? How to make Polish sound more pleasurable? [100]

Polish is very passionate, expressive, and loud. It does sound like arguing and yelling. You have to be amped up to be heard or to get in a word. Frustrating due to the interrupting. Add Vodka, and every other word is Kurwas. Extremely, animated. One could do stand up. I've laughed so hard watching stories being told because the teller acts out everything. Hysterical.

Language / How does Polish sound to you? How to make Polish sound more pleasurable? [100]

I've heard girls speaking very soft and rather quiet.

Good point. Women continue to speak in a normal tone and softly. It's hard to keep up with men. I feel like I'm yelling. No voice the next day. Throughout this, men do continue to be polite to women. Generalization.

Life / Scientology in Poland [24]

Scientology's beliefs were written by a science fiction author, L. Ron Hubbard. Principal: A human is an immortal 'alien' spirit trapped on Earth in a physical body...How can anyone believe this religion considering who wrote the doctrine? Side note: <LOL> Sex is equated as a numb emotion and equated to an applause. Most can agree that they happen to be applauders.

Ohh, you need to be spoiled too.

you love somebody then you should show them on more than one occassion a year

True! That's the biggest complaint. Why show your love for one day? Should be everyday.

Food / Polish (but can be just any other) recipes for chicken dishes anyone? [23]

Polski: Old fashioned Chicken Soup. Perfect for cold weather. So simple, don't even need a recipe. Place uncooked chicken parts in stock pot. Simmer with choice of vegetables: potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnip, celery, herbs: bay leaves, thyme, marjoram etc. (Poles loves Vegeta, if this is used , should be enough seasoning. A nice touch is french dumplings at the very end. Just drop batter spoon size in and viola dumplings. This basically, makes itself, plus, the home smells sooo good.

Life / WHY POLISH PEOPLE DON'T USE THEIR NATIVE FIRST NAME WHEN ABROAD? [136]

Why would you change your name to accommodate others abroad. I think it is rude when people butcher my name. Be considerate and ask how to pronounce it. Also, I dislike it when Poles Americanize their name by changing the spelling. For instance, the ending, 'ski' to 'sky'? The Poles I know do not change their names.

Life / WHY POLISH PEOPLE DON'T USE THEIR NATIVE FIRST NAME WHEN ABROAD? [136]

Arien

So if you have a decent alternative to simplify your name, then why not? It'll save you a lot of little annoyances

Comes down to personal preference. True, there are Polish translations of first names. Last names are trickier, spelling only, unless you legally change it. My first name can't be translated to Polish. Your right, annoyances, can drive some to change their names.

Americans, pronounce my last name phonetically how it sounds. Which is wrong. I do take the time to help people say it. I usually break it down: ***-****-**-ski. That seems to help. My first name so far, is easy on both sides to say. Just have the last to contender with.

Food / Sour cream use in Pierogi dough? [11]

Must be a family recipe? I have never seen or had pierogi dough with sour cream. It would change the consistency of the dough. Sour cream is used as a condiment to top it off.

Life / Polish Name Day celebration [40]

Yes, Name Day's are celebrated! My name isn't translatable? My understanding is that everyone knows your name day due to it's calendar placement. That way friends are always able to wish you well. I love the fact that PF places names at the top page.

Food / Horsemeat, anyone? [62]

Horse meat is taboo! The horse is domesticated and thought as a companion. It has pet status in the Western world. In the U.S., it's shipped overseas; highly frowned upon even in dog food. It's a major meat in a few countries, notably in Central Asia, but Europe, South America and China do consume.

Personally, I have to disassociate myself from my food groups. I would never eat a domesticated animal.

(Side Note:) My aunt and uncle lived on an Island. I would visit in the summer time. I loved to help take care of the cute bunny rabbits they had. Unknowingly, at dinner, I had a bite of one my little friends. I asked my uncle what kind of meat we were having?

I thought it was chicken. I was horrified that it was rabbit. The same one I had been petting. I'm scarred. <EWWW>

Food / Horsemeat, anyone? [62]

Such a great horse but so neglected.

Heart wrenching to see such neglect. People that neglect and hurt animals are not human. It says a lot about people when their cruel to animals. Krysia, that's incredible what you do for these horses...and that says a lot about you!
