I would rather prefer to go to Cracow in January - more probable winter will set in for good meaning rather frost with some snow and far less moisture - perhaps New Year is a thing to try in Cracow but I am pretty sure it's gonna be expensive though you probably won't be able to book for it already

buy that water (called spring water) that is sold in 5 litre bottles in the supermarkets - most of the tap water in Warsaw comes from Vistula river as far as I know - would you drink it from the river? do you believe they filter it out with Brita filtres? I don't think Brita filtres filtre out detergents and similar. 'Spring water' is actually underground water with tested purity and quality - some (for example the sort sold in 1.5 litre bottles in Biedronka) are on the verge of being mineral waters (but they tend to be more expensive).

btw Wroclaw Boy has the misfortune of living in Wroclaw where tap water is probably the worst in whole Poland - back studying in Wroclaw I used to bring all of my water from home (there are parts of Wroclaw that have their own wells and water is much better there)

also my experience - hehe - and I though that my English was quite alright before coming to England ;) well I got used to most sorts of accents though never came to terms with the cockney and didn't think highly of that habit to omit h and t (sometimes even k)in pronounciation that make you think younger English generation suffer from pandemic asthma :P

(consider pronouncing the word 'hot' in that matter brrrrr gives me shivers ;)

well they weren't caught accepting bribes actually - but it is quite possible they did - however this is not the thing - the thing is they were reportedly but to some extent arguably working against the interests of the state

I am no expert in this field - but I guess you should try to contact church authorities in Grajewo - church institutions often keep their records indefinitely, so unless the records were somehow destroyed you should find a trace of Kamila and link to her ancestors there

Katowic - similar to dziedzic - means a member of progeny of Kat (or kat) (a personal name or a name of a function/title)

(cf. Szymon Szymonowic - aka Simon Simonides) - this is similar to Russian (or East Slavic) - icz (as in russian patronimia and also in Ruthenian surnames (and east Polish) (many Ruthenians polonized but kept their Ruthenian Surnames ) that's why we've got Kuryłowiczs (from Kuryło, or Kurył) , Zdanowiczs, Kasprowiczs)

Katowice is plural of Katowic - so the place (a village originally) is described by the name of progeny of some person possibly a founder

don't tell me about Polish courts - I have read about the Supreme Court verdicts that contradict plain logic (guess what in a political case) - as if courts in Poland are run by cristal, unbiased people with no interest conflicts, no dirt behind their nails etc - this is actually the main obstacle to making this country a civilised one

Polish verb zabić - does not necesarily mean to murder frd - so the thing was perhaps gross exaggeration but not a blatant lie, doctor G refused to operate a couple of people for no financial 'share' from their side as well as did not do proper treatment in some cases for the same reason.

you must have heard of Mr Kaczmarek - imagine most of his colleagues are as truthful as he is - do you take his colleagues word as a good coin contrary to what Ziobro says - I don't know the Blida's case this well (not the pre-arrest proceedings) - I can imagine that Ziobro was trying to arrange things so that there was massive medial coverage - but it does not instantly constitute a criminal act - if you look for Polish politicians who lie - they all lie - some however have some public interest in mind (so doing wrong thing to advance a good cause - which is after all not a way to go) while others just their own - this is in my perception the gravest difference between PiS and most other parties (I know that especially now PiS lack intelectual brilliance - and it is for the most part the fault of Kaczyński)


- you must be joking - every other Polish politician almost instanly sues anyone who says anything not favourable of him/her ESPECIALLY if there is some substance to it (relates to some facts) - you should've already noticed that staying this long in Poland

well I can remember my mum buying 'schab' (whatever it is called in English) with bones and then cutting the bone away (I think it is part of the spine) with a big knife - but most of the time you can buy 'schab' with no bones attached

as far as I know schab is some posterior part of the pig back (well 'top') - I surely lack in English vocabulary ;)

warm gloves, warm shoes - it is perfect if they don't soak too easily, something warm for your head (covering ears) perhaps a woolen scarf for your neck and sometimes face (it's good to have a wide one - well this is what most Polish women wear), warm (woolen?) coat or anorak (depending what style you prefer) you will see different styles of using scarfs here

it's not that it happens so often but during heavy frosts you need to apply some cream to your face - I never did but I am a guy and women have more delicate skin and many if not most women in Poland use creams to protect skin (especially lips are in danger) during heavy frosts

as far as I know - and I am not nearly an expert - the thing is you need to use the right meat for it - every other thing is simple (sort of) - I am not 100 per cent convinced you get the right meat so readily in Britain (don't know about the states)

I have worked in postal dispatch center in Wroclaw on couple of occasions - before Christmas (starting in November already) they hire temporary help and this is the source of theft - I have witnessed empty parcels being discovered behind fridge in staff room - but it must have been a work of a single person then (there were just a couple of them) - the guards rarely checked the lugage of the poeple leaving the facility that was another reason (and it was also possible to leave it completely unnoticed too - now the facility has been moved and it's a bit different) still I don't think theft was or is common - worked with dozens of people there most of whom seemed to be honest even if not always hard working

you know you have a point here - when Poles were allowed into the UK and Ireland suddenly Poland became a silent, peaceful, friendly land :) too bad the credit crunch

and there was a time my advice to the people I knew was - while abroad try to stay away from Poles whenever possible - the time coicided with me travelling abroad :)

and you know what the trouble is - the prisons in Poland are already full up

maybe I am not following the thing closely enough but I think you got it all wrong - it was Tusk who tried to ruthlessly bargain with the US (even risking reaching any agreement) - from the prospective he might have been right with the new administration bound to land in Washington and not that enthusiastic about the project (with the credit crunch unwinding)
