News / Poland Remembers start of WW2 [200]

I watched some of the ceremonies on tv - bbc world covered most of it live.

Here is a pamphlet that the polish association in the UK is apparently handing out:

For those of you who can't make out the small lettering, go to [zpwb.org.uk/en/Current_Matters] and open the word file for a larger image.

Also some anti polish posters were put up in the border town of Loeknitz and Goerlitz. BB, was it you?? ;)

Life / Poland Vodka Production and alcohol drinking culture [16]

Indiwiduals,
The time has come to set the straight wersion
of the story that dewious vodkas companies,
liquor stores, bartenders
and misinformed friends hawe been prepetuating.
The authentic drink, inwented in Poland, is called Wodka.
Not vodka. There is no V in Wodka.
The vodka cartel has conweniently glossed ower
the simple fact that there is no V in wodka.
But history is on our side, and vodka cannot refute
the incontrowertible authenticity of history.
If you hawe been misled, do not feel like a wictim.
Be empowered; turn rage into actiwism,
and rewel in the support of 36 million Polish people.
And together, through non-wiolent protest, we shall bring
dignity to wodka and wodka drinkers ewerywhere.
We shall hawe our rewenge,
we will prewail and will be windicated.
Welcome to the Wodka Mowement.

Also, watch this video on the "vodka wars" for some vodka history:) : vbs.tv/watch/the-vice-guide-to-travel/wodka-wars

Life / Expensive brand retail outlets in Poland - how do they survive? [19]

Recently i stopped by a popular drug store (shoppers drug mart for you canucks) to buy a drink as there was nothing else in sight. I had a chat with the bored as hell manager who told me that hardly anyone comes into her newly built store. She is also expecting business to be in the red for at least 1 year while the surrounding area develops. I guess they built the store b/c they anticipate business to pick up as well as to prevent a competitor from taking the location.

I'm sure these foreign owned expensive clothing stores you speak of WB are there for a similar reason. Maybe they're expecting business to pick up, either from local poles or tourists. Germans love shopping in wroclaw, for example, because they can purchase the same or similar products for less.

turns into a biatch fest between my wife and the shop clerk.

Clearly the clerks are jealous that your wife has been fortunate to marry a wealthy foreigner who can afford to buy his lady expensive clothing. That and customer service is lacking in PL.

Food / Is it just me, or is the Polish diet rather unhealthy? [119]

Is it just me, or is the Polish diet rather unhealthy?

Yup, its way too high in saturated fats. Poles don't eat much in the way of fruits and veggies either. I heard heart disease is on the rise in poland.

since Polish food is fattening how would anyone explain the fact that Polish people are not overweight the way some people in the Western countries are;)???

Well in the end it's all about how many calories people eat. If you don't want to gain weight, calories going in must = calories going out. I think poles generally eat less cals than americans for instance.

News / Western rationalism vs Polish (slavic) comfort [17]

Michal, you sound jealous/unhappy that your fellow poles in poland are much more successful than under communism...

false Polish Communism was

Communism was corrupt everywhere. It was not a very popular ideology - especially in poland.

Travel / Alcohol on trains in Poland [40]

I don't know it if is legal but drinking on trains is quite common - I've never been told to not to drink. On a number of occassions i've seen a "beer cart" stop by each cabin to ask if anyone is interested in purchasing some beer. Not sure if this is provided by pkp or if this was someone's private business venture:)

USA, Canada / WHAT'S THE CANADIAN HEALTH SERVICE REALLY LIKE? [15]

What do you do if you become gravely ill, during the two-year waiting period?

You go to a walk in clinic or the emergency room at the hosptial. You'll get treated, but you have to wait longer than you would if you had a family doctor. Obviously if you're in a serious condition (bleeding heavily after being shot for instance) you will be treated immediately.

I rate this system very poorly. We pay fat tax to support it but get mediocre service.

Jacenty, I believe the system is good - better than most countries on this planet. However, our system is heavily abused by people who don't live here. For example, some people con the government into giving their elderly parents (who live in india, lebanon etc) into getting canadian citizenship. They only come to canada for expensive medical treatments. THese are people who DO NOT pay taxes, do not contribute to the wealth of this country yet drain the land of its resources! I bet if you prevent this **** from happening the lineups will shorten. That and go after the doctors union to train more docs!

Nowhere in the world are there so many people obese and so many people with cancer.

So the health care system is to blame for having chocolate/pop vending machines and serving deep fried pizza in high schools????

History / Matters of Propaganda...Or: how was the West portrayed in Poland? [150]

From what I have heard, Poles were generally very interested in the west - even envious. People knew very well that life was a lot better west of the wall. It was the soviet/commie oligarchs and the commie puppet government in poland that spread evil propaganda vs the west - few believed in that BS.

Life / What is the nature of Polish people's hygiene? [76]

Hygiene in Poland used to be a huge problem. Nowadays i think the younger generations keep clean, but the 50+ age group ... umm plug your nose. Even here in canada, i can smell all the 50+ aged eastern european immigrants.

Anyone who will work hard will have sweat.

LOL working in a convenience store is considered hard work?

Work / A list of English Schools in Poland run by a UK citizen? [24]

FreedomPirate01

It sounds to me like you just want to live in poland. Why not go to poland to start a business? Or teach english?

Why do you want to spend 4 years studying something more "artistic"? Just for fun? I know many people who went to uni to study the humanities for fun but in the end couldn't find work because these degrees are useless. Maybe this isn't an issue for you as you can always go back to the family business.

If i were in your shoes i'd try to start a business in poland or maybe get into real estate in PL. You can always do "journalism, photography or english writing" on the side. Just my 2 cents.

As for graduate studies, i think you're better off doing an mba in the usa.

Life / What is the nature of Polish people's hygiene? [76]

Pray, what hard facts and data do you base your assumption upon?

My nose collected plenty of data during all the summers i spent in poland as i was growing up. Maybe if i visited in the winter my 'data' would not be so skewed:) Forgot to mention, 9.9 times out of 10 it was men who smelled bad.

But in the 00's the situtation has improved i must say.

UK, Ireland / Polish women in Scottish bogus marriage scam [20]

During commie times when arabs, blacks, etc. came to poland to study, polish women would flock to them because they knew these men had money (students were given pocket money). Not much, maybe $100 or so, but this was equivalent to a couple of months salary at the time. These naive polish women somehow thought these men were wealthy. Some even left poland with these men and in some cases they were not treated well.

News / If Poland is attacked by Russia will N.A.T.O help defend Poland or not? [171]

All this talk about tanks, soldiers, etc is pointless. Future wars will be fought in 2 ways:

Do you people honestly think that the ruskies are going to send their drunk soldiers pushing their tanks over the border into poland??? Hell no, the'll launch 2 nucs and poland is done like dinner.

Secondly, in the event of an attack on poland, no nato country would dare send any of their soldiers to poland. W. europeaners would not want to die for poland and politicians would not want to risk losing power over such a decision.

At best they would send supplies (food, ammo, etc.) and intelligence.

Do you really think a german will be willing to risk his/her life for poland?????????? dream on!!

Like i said above, they'll provide some help and if it doesn't work, they will work out some kind of peace deal.

Work / I'm 19, born in Poland, raised in the U.S. Moving to Poland..or not? [25]

I think you should either go to Poland for a bit (1-2 yrs) and then return to the US to go to college. This is a good option if all you want to do is travel/relax. Don't expect to find a job in poland without an education (unless you're self employed).

Or
Go to college (4yr degree) in the US first and then go to poland - maybe to work, setup a business or whatever.

IMO the second option is best.

News / If Poland is attacked by Russia will N.A.T.O help defend Poland or not? [171]

PolishCanuck,....what the hell do you know about anything? You're from Canada.

I know more about europe than you, yank. I was born in poland and i bet i've spent more time in europe than yourself.

Just go back to the abortion thread and continue talking about religious ********. It's the only reason why you came to this forum.

Only if they too are interested in becoming steaks!

Obviously no nation will launch nukes, not even north korea or iran (if they get 'em) - it would be the end of the world. That's why i've provided 2 options. If we don't kill ourselves, cyberware will be the future (it has already started btw).

Well...alone because we are immediate neighbours to any threat....you can bet on it!

You can't blame me for being so pessimistic, krautboy. Poland has been abandoned by it's allies in the past. And also, don't forget the molotov-ribbentrop pact:) History likes to repeat itself.

News / If Poland is attacked by Russia will N.A.T.O help defend Poland or not? [171]

I don't remember Germany being Polands ally recently...;)

Oh come on kraut, you know what i was making reference to:)

Or maybe you are suggesting that germany would make a more loyal ally than france/uk in a future conflict? :)
But yes i agree, germany needs poland as a buffer.

Europe has changed big time!

Yeah it has. Europe also changed in ww1 when it was said that ww1 was to be "a war to end all wars":) Things always change.

News / If Poland is attacked by Russia will N.A.T.O help defend Poland or not? [171]

I can think of dozens of situations where Russia, Israel, Pakistan or India decide its mushroom time.

It's all talk though. If iran launches nukes at israel, they will retaliate. The result will be a mutual destruction of both countries and the spread of radiation. Why would they want this?

Life / LOGS FOR THE FIRE...how much for a trailer load....? [18]

After almost freezing to death last year when a friend failed to deliver the promised logs for my fire , i decided that this year i would try another source......

I've always thought of you as a strange, lost man - but now i'm starting to feel sorry for you.

Have you tried to apply for some kind of social assistance? Maybe you could scam the british system (more money than the polish)?
