I think the £yczakowski/Lychakivskiy Cemetery is divided into 2 sections: 1 for poles and 1 for ukrainians. The cemetary was neglected for some time during the cold war - i think the eagles cemetery was actually completely destroyed and the land was turned into some kind of storage area. I would imagine that the ukies visit the ukrainian part and the poles visit the polish graves - remember, poles and ukrainians have not always been friendly to one another.

They are controlling as you say, but they are also very relentless in their pursuit of new recruits into their church. I was hounded by a lady from this church for several months - she only stopped after i had called the police!!! I only talked to her when she came to my door (they door-door shop here in canada for new members) and i guess she must have misunderstood my desire to learn about the faith for actually wanting to join. Seems like your lady succumbed to this evil.

Some religions can be harmful. This particular faith/church wants full control of your life - everything from who you date/marry to how you spend you money to how you spend your free time. If you think the jehovas are negatively affecting her life, then you should help her out!

Olasz, I am not saying that Polish girls are useless. I'm not even saying that each and everyone of them is a gold digger. But many are, and they love to pounce on foreigners like a cat would pounce on a mouse. I travel to Poland often and i see how girls react to me and other foreigners. I know what people (esp. women) think about foreigners in poland (i speak polish). They are much more eager to start a relationship with a foriegn man than a native pole, and one of the major reasons for this is that a man from western europe/NA is more likely to give her a better life, financially speaking.

Personally I would say that most jobs in Poland are dead-end jobs as the work environment there is simply disgusting. For instance, employers have no respect for their employees. There was a time just a couple of years ago where employers would fire people left and right for no reason - they especially enjoyed firing people just before their scheduled retirement. My uncle told me about a bank that created a 'contest' for new applicants where they had to devise a solution to an actual problem in the bank. The applicant with the best proposal would get the job. Seems nice and creative right? Wrong! It was a scam. The bank stole the best idea and gave all the applicants (including the 'winner') a kopa w dupe! WTF?? On top of all this, the salaries are piss poor. How the hell does one work in such an environment? To me, this fits the definition of a 'dead end job.'

From what i hear and see during my regular visits to PL, foreign companies provide the best options for fair employment. I'm sure things are improving now that poland is in the EU but there is still a lot of work to be done.

Some Poles (a small percentage) leave poland for the US (ie chicago) to work and save as much money as possible. They live in poor neighbourhoods and spend as little $ as possible on life's necessities (food, clothing, transportation, housing etc.). THey work jobs that require no education or skills - in other words, mind numbing back breaking physical labour. You can spot such people from a mile away as they often look physically exhausted, unhappy, aged and often complain about life in the US. They live and work like this for 15-25 years before returning to poland to retire.

I bet 'marysia' fits the above criteria. I cannot understand why these people give up the best years of their lives for .... WHAT??? They fail to see that a little investment in the form of a simple 1-2 year college diploma will not only provide them with a more respectable job but also one that pays more and above all makes them HAPPY.

True but many stayed. There were also some polish lanugage schools in wilno. There's quite a sizeable polish disapora in the city.

I've been to wilno, lithuania once 2 years ago and found it to be very similar to poland - krakow in particular. There is a lot of evidence of polish culture/history in this city.

The people there HATE poles with a passion so much that i thought the waitresses spat into my food at the restaurant (mmmm i had this cold purple lithuanian soup, it was good). Apparently everyone speaks polish but nobody likes to admit it. My 1/2 polish 1/2 lithuanian tour guide also said this - makes sense since polish/russian were the only official languages in lithuania during the commie era. I started off by talking polish to the shop keepers/waiters/people on the streets, and although they all understood they were very rude - i quickly switched over to english and the people were much more friendly/open.

I've also noticed that poles see lithuanians as being polish "z dziadka na pra dziadka" (err something to that effect, i can't remember the exact phrase i've heard poles use).

There seems to be quite a bit of controversy surrounding the bielski brothers, some say they were freedom fighters some say they were war criminals. I think it's safe to say that these allegations of (bielski) "war crimes" will never be proven.

Well when i visit Poland my family and people that i meet for the first time always refer to me as being a "kanadyjczyk" (canadian).

Also, on my last trip to poland i watched a court tv program where a pole (who spent 2 years working in england) was on trial for a crime in poland. All members of the court as well as the witnesses referred to him as an "anglik" even though he was fluent in polish while his english was barely understandable (he threw in a few english words/phrases during the trial for some strange reason).

Don't be surprised if you don't feel "at home." Though this my change if you stay in the country for a longer period of time.

Polish cities are littered with brothels. A couple of years ago when i was in poland, there was a police raid on a brothel in wroclaw. In the paper they said that brothels are quite common in poland and are usually disguised as bars/clubs. Others are hidden brothels (in apartment buildings) that only taxi drivers know about. In warsaw people put ads for these brothels on the windshields of cars. Sad.


This is true. When my cousin worked as a cop in krakow in the 90's - early 00's, he said that the police would quite often turn a blind eye to these "businesses."
