Work / How to get and survive an internship in Poland [5]

Applying for an internship can be tricky, especially since you need to get a visa (but not always.)

Experience and opportunity is better than money.

First off, if you're just there for the summer, skip the the visa. A tourist visa is good enough for 90 days. Even the 90-day limit is kind of worthless if you come into Poland from another EU country in the Schengen Agreement.

A visa requires health insurance, proof of X-amount of money per month, (the biggest obstacles) and an invitation from the employer. I say forgo the visa and simply work under the radar (it's not too hard.)

Find a company or school (whatever) and imply that you can work for free. You might not get paid, but they'll use you and give you tons of experience (just because they can, and because it costs them nothing.) Use your position to get money on the side by offering English lessons to your colleagues and their colleagues. If you're good, they'll spread the word around.

The dorms here are pretty cheap, around 400zl a month. They're fairly nice, and have tons of young people in them.

Find and date a Polish girl.
They're beautiful, and most have a place where you can stay (even if it's her family's place.)

Love / Girl just interested, or a hooker? [30]

I was standing at the bus stop, minding my business, when this lady walks up and then starts walking all sexy like, like she's trying to attract my attention.

So I kind of ignore it, there are not any other guys at the bus stop. She goes to the other side, I turn around and she starts like making sort of sexy gestures about herself (kind of like making poses and stuff.) My bus came and I got on it, leaving a pouting girl there by herself.

I think she was a hooker. Was she?

Work / How to get and survive an internship in Poland [5]

You don't need a visa (at least I don't) to be in Poland. SG isn't coming into my workplace, demanding that I hand over my passport. As far as they know, I'm just a tourist, which is fine. (Because of the Schengen they don't even know when I came into Poland, just when I came into the EU.)

Love / Girl just interested, or a hooker? [30]

Ouch. So harsh.

She wasn't too bad. She didn't say anything, just stood there and kind of felt herself up while looking lustfully.
Tranny? Must've been some surgery.

Real Estate / Best investment land location close to Warsaw? [5]

There will be some Dzialki in Mokotow that will be freed up soon (they have to change some laws.) They'll probably go for pretty cheap (prime property that will skyrocket soon after.) Anyway, this is what my student tells me.

Travel / Student hostel in warsaw travel - good idea? [9]

My experience with Polish hostels is that they've been the best I've ever been to. Just practice normal precautions (like not leaving valuables lying around.)

Travel / Visit to Kazimierz Dolny , Poland [14]

Merged: Kazimierz Dolny: An afternoon is enough.

I was rather disappointed by Kazimierz Dolny, Poland.

It is rather quaint in it's own way, but the museums are a rip-off (most everything thing there is, actually) and the hordes of tourists didn't make it any better. The castle is OK, as are the churches, but beyond that there really isn't that much.

The musicians are awful. The rooster bread is actually really good. The few restaurants I've been to there are very nice. U Fryzjera has really good food, but the service is terrible. Can read further here.

Are there any other towns "off the beaten path" that are worth a visit?

Travel / Visit to Kazimierz Dolny , Poland [14]

disgusting grey hole called Warsaw

Yeah, Warsaw is tad gray. It's not too bad though.

I quite like the Polish countryside. I'm actually yearning for a small place in the country. A dzialka is probably the closest thing in the near future.

Travel / Visit to Kazimierz Dolny , Poland [14]

I highly recommend this thread on the Polish countryside. I didn't write it, and I don't really agree with it, but I found the discussion in the comments quite interesting. It gets quite sharp and quite angry at some points.

kazimierz dolny is awesome.. not sure what your problem is.. hmm

I didn't say that it was bad, I just though that an afternoon was enough. I was also inquiring about other such towns, ones that might be hidden and off the beat track.

Love / Girl just interested, or a hooker? [30]

this thread has nothing to do with relationships.

Dear Upset Idiot,
This lady about which we speak was Polish and this event happened in Poland. Those two things are precisely why I started this thread.
I am not Polish and not entirely accustomed to Polish culture, especially courting rituals. I was hoping those who are more familiar with said part of culture would be able to shed more light on this event. I did not want to misunderstand her propositioning, so I posed this question: "Girl just interested or a hooker?" in hopes that it might be answered and stimulate some discourse. I put forth two hypothesis: that she was interested in me or that she might have been a sex worker. Since I am not familiar with those who work in the sex industry, or how they exactly ply their trade, AND since I am not accustomed to being actively wooed on the street, I couldn't exactly tell which was happening. As I stated before, I was hoping that other people in this forum could help me figure it out and decide.

Since this thread concerns an event that was obviously centered around romance-be it for sale or just for wont-it deserves to be in this section and it deserves to be discussed. If you are not interested in this thread you are neither obligated to read it, nor are you urged to make stupid, misinformed rants.

Life / Poland Vodka Production and alcohol drinking culture [16]

No one competes with Russia for drinking culture (48% of adult males die by alcohol-related deaths in Russia.)
I think Poland's vodka days are waning and beer is now the drink of choice.

Poland still guards its vodka traditions vehemently. They want to EU to regulate it, and declare that vodka can only be made from grains and potatoes (meaning that vodkas like Ciroc will no longer be able to be sold labeled as vodka.)

Love / Girl just interested, or a hooker? [30]

you didnt say she is polish, or that you live in poland so who would even know
this..

It's Polish forum with topics about Poland and Polish people; I kind of assumed that people would know she was Polish. Why would I post a random post about a girl that was not Polish or wasn't even in Poland?

what/who has a name like this. someone without respect.

It's a pun on "Polish", it comes from my school days when I was studying Polish.

and there are people from all over the world visiting this site, it could have been
anywhere.

No, just stupid people like you.

History / Gdansk and it's history with Poland [116]

Gdansk has century's long connection with Poland.
Those connection are good enough to say that Poland has historical rights to GdaƄsk regardless that after year 1793 the town become German.

The town was ethnically German long before that.

Love / Girl just interested, or a hooker? [30]

it also represents a derogatory statment as in Polish my/me Knob/dick/Prick etc etc.

Your apparent lack of intelligence is quite annoying.
It's the name I use for my blog: polishmeknob.blogspot.com.

I can choose what ever name I wish.
If you take offense to it, it's your problem, not mine; I just don't care (but I don't really see HOW you could take offense to it.) If you think it's anything that's supposed to degrade Poland or Polish people, you're mistaken.

Since you are not actually contributing to this thread, but instead acting indignant (and rather stupidly) I must ask that you not add on to your idiocy. For someone accusing me of trolling or posting things off topic, you're quite the hypocrite.

If you wish to continue this discourse about my name/posting topics, please send me a message.

So please, unless you have anything useful to add and not the drivel you've been posting, please do shut up.

Anyway, I haven't seen that lady again; although, I do go to that bus stop frequently. Next time she comes, I'll inquire just what exactly her intentions are.

Food / Packet soups recommended or not [32]

I recommend them.
They're not nearly as good as the real thing, but they travel and ship well and are a pit of Poland when you're far away.

Work / Would it be hard to work in Poland if I don't speak Polish? [17]

well currently im a fibre optic engineer which is sort of telecomms, but im not setting my heart on that haha so im pretty flexible at the mo

You should be fine. Most educated people here speak English (with or without difficulty.) Being an engineer, you'd most certainly be dealing with people who speak at least a little English.

Life / Must See Movies in Polish? [65]

Good Polish Movies

I recently saw Mala Moskwa (you can read my full thoughts on it [polishmeknob.blogspot.com/2009/07/film-review-maa-moskwa.html])
To say the least, I was unimpressed. For a while now, I've been trying to find some Polish movies that are really good (I hear U Pana Boga is a quality flick.) I've recently downloaded Idealny Facet Dla Mojej Dziewczyny and To Nie Tak Jak Myslisz, Kotku, as well as scrounged up a copy of the venerable satire, Rejs, and will soon watch them.

Are there any suggestions of some really good Polish movies? (I have to admit, I'm rather picky. My favorite Polish movies are Ziemia Obiecana and Katyn (quality pictures), but I despised Pan Tadeusz.)

Life / Must See Movies in Polish? [65]

Definitely this one, but imo it concentrates a little too much on the relationships after the murders, and too little on the event itself.

I think it's more about the far-reaching effects of it, using personal relationships as a canvas.

I mean, how much execution can the audience bear? It's the shockwave of the event that ripples through, and one can see it through the different stories that are interwoven.
