Must See Movies in Polish?

Any Polish TV shows or movies that are "must sees." I don't speak Polish, but I'm trying to learn and watching a good show helps (I hope). I've seen a few movies, and the series Dekalog which was AMAZING!!!! I've also seen the classic Ulica Graniczna, and Sami Swoi. More recent fils I saw were Tato (it was good), Żurek, Przypadek (Blind Chance... it was really good too!), Zróbmy sobie wnuka (Let's Make a Grandson... made me laugh :-) and Emergency Exit (don't recall the title in Polish, but I only watched it because it was filmed near the little town of Skokowa which I visited last summer). Does anyone have any recommendations?

Psy and Psy 2 and... Quo Vadis isn't bad...

Hmm...Francuski Numer is the last Polish movie i saw and it was good ;)

The newer (1999) version of With Fire & Sword / Ogniem i Mieczem - based on the first book in Sienkiewicz's Trilogy! They did a nice job IMO...the films of the other 2 books, The Deluge / Potop and Fire in the Steppe / Colonel (Pan) Wolodyjowski are older but still worth a watch...

Also White / Biały directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski is good (Julie Delpy from Killing Zoe, 3 Musketeers is great).

id also recommend Kiler and Kilerów Dwóch, or Dzień Świra if youre up for a laugh

a word of advice before watching Psy - it's really violent for my taste, although I like it, a decent action movie, but Psy 2 is just a sheer bloodbath, rather shallow, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone :(

Emergency Exit - Wyjście awaryjne - pretty bad IMHO

If you don't mind watching some older films (as those you mentioned), and if you liked Sami Swoi, there's a sequel to it (Nie ma mocnych), which is a little worse, but still a good comedy, while the 3rd part (Kochaj albo rzuć) is weak.

Other interesting comedies: Miś (1980 or so) a cult movie here, really catching some of the blatant absurdities of the life during the communist era (Rejs, from the early 70's is another cult object, but it's hermetic, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't speak good Polish, it's too much relying on word games, irony etc., so you'd need a very good translation), and of course Seksmisja (early 80's) - a low budget (for Hollywood standards) sci-fi, very funny, even when watched many times.

Lighter movies, but more recent: Kiler (from the 90's), and Dzień świra - (this one was pretty controversial, mocking some of Polish holy cows, so not for everybody, but if you don't mind laughing with bitter reflection, it could be interesting). I also liked Pułkownik Kwiatkowski (1995) a farse about the early 50's with some serious notes.

Something about the same period, but totally serious: Człowiek z marmuru (1977) and one of my very favorite Polish movies: Przesłuchanie (1981, but deeply buried by the censorship till the fall of the commies regime in 1989, when it finally made it to the theaters).

I recommend a Polish language movie "The ring with the crowned eagle". Saw it many years ago and I remember it being excellent though sad. Story about a young AK officer who survived the war only to be carted of and I think killed by the Soviets.

If youre Polish and have not seen "Czterech Pancerny" (sp) you should be ashamed

Pfff you should be its a classic, just cause its centuries before your time doesn’t mean you wont enjoy it.

Still Polish movies FTL

this movie is the slowest movie ever.. it is very good though but one has to really enjoy dialog and psychological drama.. otherwise it's a great way to catch some zzzzzzzzzs. :D

I dont know, its the only Polish movie I ever sat through, its a classic I just figured every polish person saw it.

So only because it's classic and most of Polish ppl saw it, i have to also? No way.

actually, I'm rather ashamed because I DID see "Czterech pancerynych i pies" (the whole series, more than once, as a child) - so stereotyped communist propaganda: idealized view of the Poles, Russians - other nations of angels on earth, Germans of course cunning evil (I don't object), but also stupid, one could wonder how they marched so deep into USSR, took France, endangered Britain etc., if they were such retards.

In my movie library I have only one film in Polish, but it's a good one: "The Saragossa Manuscript" (1965).

The Saragossa Manuscript was a favorite movie of Jerry Garcia, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. They bought the rights to this movie and restored it in the 90's.

The movie is a multilevel collection of "stories within a story", similar to the Pulp Fiction, with many simultaneous time-lines and narrators.
