Travel / Traveling to Poland: Tips for First-Timers [47]

We usually eat in Poland freshly prepared food without all those strange additions. I think that we also tend to walk more. However, the percentage of overweight Polish teenagers is becoming higher nowadays because of McDonald's + coke+ crisps...

Travel / Places to visit Poland for the New Year? [30]

Telefonitika, you should see Wieliczka Salt Mine. You are allowed in only with the guide so there is no problem with your 9 year. I took my daughter there when she was five and she really was happy about this. There is a really nice park near Blonie in Krakow with boats on a pond. Usually we have here some outdoor cultural events. For sure you will find something for yourselves.

Travel / Eating (and drinking) out in Warsaw and Krakow [6]

Some places in Krakow.
I like "Nostalgia" and "Lowcy smakow" at Karmelica Street", you also should try "Chlopskie jadlo" (peasants food), at Jana street. If you drive from Krakow towards Zakopane there is a really good retaurant called "Krakowiaci i Gorale"-it,'s about 15 km from the city boundry, on the left side. Wine in those restaurants isn't expensive.

Here is the link to my favourite restaurant.

Have a good time in Krakow.

News / Tinky Winky from tellytubbies outed in Poland [145]

I found my 9-year old pupils having today a heated discussion on homosexuality, thanks to Ms Sowinska. They were about to stop watchig teletubbies due to questionable figure of Tinky Winky.... I'm not sure whether it was our politicians' aim.

Children are great at forming their own opinions. You would be surprised how observant they are - sometimes I don't realise things which are obvious for them. But they are good at discussing topics which concern them and that one obviously didn't.

Most of my university mates want to quit the job. They also need a change-that's why I ask.

Life / What kind of Internet Connections in Krakow [4]

Yes, if you are near Main Market Square you use wireless for free. I use chello but probably neostarda will be the only option for you. There are also numerous small providers in Krakow but not all of them are reliable. Sometimes you can use internet for 1 zloty per month but afterwards - as far as I know - you have to sign a contract for a year. The cheapest rate is about 30 zl per month.

Law / Bars in Krakow - opportunity to start up a business? [4]

Killerkat, that's not true anymore. The city centre is much more than the Main Square. Peope constantly open and close their businesses, so you may find something for you. However, I'm afraid that it'll take time.

Travel / Hotel recommendation in Krakow [23]

I'm afraid that's not so easy to find a decent place in July/August. Try to find something right now. Good luck and have fun in Krakow.

Travel / I need budgeting assistance for a vacation [10]

I think that for eating out something about 70-80/person/day should be enough-if you don't choose expensive places. Haircut goes from about 30, tooth removal about 50/70 - but all depends which place and which city you choose. You should ask your friends about all details because not always the most expensive dentist is the best one. Have a good time in Poland.

Travel / Tourism in Poland the plus and minus points for the natives [38]

Amathyst, merits are obvious - we need money so we need toursits. I live in Krakow and I really like to hear foreign languages being spoken spoken here. I think that tourists find Krakow interesting, charming. This city has it's soul.

Drawbacks? Sometimes it's difficult to find a seat and drink coffee at the Market Square but it's not a big deal. As you may see I can't find any problems.

These prices come from posh, widely advertised places. If you live here you know places with really good dentists who charge less. They usually don't have secretaries wearing mini skirts and you don't watch tv when you wait but quality of services is still very good.

Travel / Tourism in Poland the plus and minus points for the natives [38]

It's a pity, Tornado, but I find a lot of people here to be very rude too. And I really don't know why it's like that. Probably those people are frustrated - overworked and underpaid. Maybe all those communist years did it to us - there was so much to complain about. However, I think that most people in Poland are nice and for sure not rude but it's much easier to spot those rude.

ups...sorry

Hello, you are right realising all those changes but they have nothing to do with tourists. It's much wider problem. And I'm not sure about religion - I'm afraid that there are more "churchgoers" than religious people. For many a Sunday mass is kind of habit, a social event, an opportunity to dress up. I saw this problem in this way 20 years ago and I don't think that it has changed so much.

Travel / Train: Krakow - Bratislava [7]

I'm afraid that you may have problems to book online tickets for polsh trains going abroad. If you don't find anything on the internet, I can call the train station in Krakow tomorrow to get some information.

Travel / Train: Krakow - Bratislava [7]

I called an internarional office at a train station in Krakow. They told me that you can't book on-line but you should go to an international box office at any train station in Denmark and buy there a ticket Krakow-Bratyslava. Good luck.

Unfortunately there is no highway between Warsaw and Gdansk. Moreover, there are loads of crazy drivers here who like to overtake on a bend. I don't recommend driving from Warsaw to Gdansk unless you know how to survive here.
