I can understand the first generation having to do any kind of of work, but there is no excuse for their kids. I also know some young people stuck with cleaning jobs and no desire to do anything better, even tough they claim to have degrees from Poland.

I don't like it. I don't get it. I wish, we polish women did not have "the opinion" of being such good housekeepers...being great nurses if not doctors, lawyers or bankers would be better... Of course they are plenty of them in Chicago, but they are mostly serving the non English speaking Polonia.

On the brighter side, we sure know how to manage our money wisely and buy a house in no time (often for cash).

I personally do not come across any people who would tell polish jokes, but maybe because I work in a corporate environment where diversity is constantly promoted. Not to mention an affirmation of Code of Conduct on yearly bases. As a result, it makes a comfortable place to work for all people with various backgrounds.

I heard more jokes in the 80-s, including the radio and TV, mostly comedians. I don't remember if I read it somewhere, but the Polish Congress in The US complained and it stopped, because I don't seem to hear any polish jokes in the media and I often watch comedy channels... :)

I'm sure the jokes still exist at parties, between friends (or enemies) or within some groups who believe that any foreigner is a threat to their job...

In general, polish people are regarded as good, solid, hard working people. (Unfortunately, mostly for housekeeping and child/elderly care)
Just to comment on the situation in Germany. Well, we were never "good neighbors" and an average German would have their opinion the same as his parents or grandparents had. Too bad polish people are not helping themselves and some can behave badly.

I am good and long time friends with two German sisters. They are wonderful, good hearted women and we really like and respect each other. They feel bad and are ashamed of the past, because not all German people were Nazi killers. Just like Polish people, many were also helping Jews.

My cousin's husband (they live in Warsaw) works for a German Company (designing inside of corporate plains). He mostly works at home and flies to Germany couple of times a month. His German boss absolutely loves him and respects him. He could replace him with a German engineer anytime if he wanted to...He pays him handsomely as well.

My advise: if you hear a joke and you don't like it - nip in the bud. Mean joke tellers are mostly cowards anyway.

I don't like any stupid or demeaning jokes about anybody, but I think this one is just cute:

I used waitress for a living when I was going to college and worked at Sicilian restaurant. (occasionally, there were some men in suits dining there and the owners were tip toeing around). Hmm...

The crew was of mixed heritage: Italian, Polish, Irish, Mexican. Yes, we did call each other "names" at times, but all for a good laugh mostly. The place was really fun to work for.

It is no longer the case in my current politically correct environment... :)

I also hear that when kids from Poland start their education here they are much more advanced than the kids here. They struggle for a while with English of course, but ones they are into the classes they realize that they studied it in Poland already. One of my friend's son was a C student in Poland, needed tutoring in math, but when they moved here...he was bored in the classroom and was getting A's.

As I drove to work this morning and listen to my favorite radio talk show, they said that statistically, couples who live together before they get married, divorce more often than the couples who did not. There was no explanation given for it, just numbers.

So, polishcanuck has a point there. "Trial test" is not a good idea.
Also, based on my own experience, I lived with a man, we got engaged and then...we split. Later, I married another one. Well, we got divorced later, but not due to cohabitation issues.

Nationality counts in Poland by blood line and not the place of birth, so you are polish raised in America. American by birth, because it is the law of this country.

Pregnant Polish women do not get on the plain to America being almost 9 months pregnant hoping to give birth to a baby on American soil. It it the Mexican issue, when pregnant women run across the border to have 'american" citizen baby. From what I hear in the media, it may change.

That is a piece of BS. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS "dress for the weather". I have not had a cold for at least 15-20 years, whereas my coworkers get a 2-3 a year. It does make me shiver to see people walking in shorts and t-shirts here in Chicago at 40F. It's plain stupid. Your body has to work very hard to keep your temperature and your immune system working. If you underdress, your body is too busy to keep your temperature at the right level and it makes your immune system weak. The result - you come across a virus and it invades your weakened body. Voila. You "catch" a cold. If you were dressed right, your immune system will "kill" the invader. It does not 'waste' the energy to keep your body warm. The result - no cold.

And, don't forget to wash your hands. It works!

See, Patrycja, a lot of doctors (MD) don't want to tell you this. After all, the drug companies need to make a living and keep people working. I just don't want to contribute to this "good' cause myself :)

They usually say, "you not catching a cold because you're underdressed/overdressed, you got it because your body came in contact with a virus". They just fail to add that our bodies come across viruses/bacteria EVERY living moment of our lives. It is our immune system which needs our help to help it to fend them OFF. Long live T-cells! The soldiers in our bodies.

There are many "back to nature' style stores in Chicago and they are quite popular or they would be out of business. A lot of people believe in "body cleansing" formulas which suppose to flush out toxins. I tried one in the past and did not notice any miracles. Anyway, I don't believe in pill popping for this and for that just because the label said so...

However, I believe that we are what we eat and I buy a lot of organic products at stores like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. I complement my diet with lots of veggies and fruit, flax seed, olive oil, whole grains, nuts... My soups are based on organic chicken or beef. I like meat, of course, but it's not for every day eating and fast food is just an occasional treat (I love it too). Well, it works for me.

I think a lot of polish people are quality food lovers and enjoy home cooking. Cooking can be enjoyable activity if don't consider it a chore to begin with. Yes, it takes time but it is worthed.
