Love / What do Polish women look for in a relationship? [70]

Frank, I wanted my time with him.
My family can pay for for the big jobs, if they want to do remodeling...my friends can ask their boyfriends. I would "allow" some minor help...but not hours and hours of work.

Yes, I have fond memories of laying the floor. Even pictures to prove it. Ha!
(no dirty thoughts, please) :)

Feedback / Thank you admin [52]

you can easily find out what company our website is hosted

This so called "CIA" talks about dumb polaks, but he is too dumb to know that you are never anonymous on the Internet, at least for an average user.

Well, there are some ways to hide, but that' s only for some to know or some who have a good reason to hide...
dumb CIA lol

Language / difficult English words for Polish speakers? [119]

pronouncing TH in THAT, THIEF ,THOOTHPASTE

Yes, this one was a challenge for me too. One time, the teacher sat across me - face to face, she opened her mouth and I was to position my tongue the way she did, and I was repeating the kind of 'hissing" sound after her! :)

She did it to all who had a trouble with the right sound...It was so funny, but it worked!

Life / Situation of women in Poland and the society [25]

Here is my quick comment.
I can agree with Maxine's points about the housing situation, but most women I know are the "bosses" of a houshold, which includes decisions about money, furnishings or vacations, even though the husband might be bringing in more money. Also, what's with the size 0 or 2? I think size 8 or 10 are more common (unlike American average of 14).

Yes, Polish women enjoy looking nice and would not go out looking unkempt and wearing wrinkled clothes. They are just selfconscious of their looks and elegant. Nothing wrong with that. I think, keeping father's last name for a child is more cultural than mandatory nowadays. As to the internet? Lots of people still can not afford a computer at home, but they are using it at work and quite capably (my nieces).

The catholic church is very conservative and is known for not making women a part of the service. Not only in Poland. So, it's not a Polish woman issue. Hopefully, it will change some day.

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

criminal rates rising due to lack of spaces in prisons? More bribery? More drugs? More and more idiots coming to power? Collapse of underfunded public sectors, i.e. education and health service? Property prices bubble? Shortage of those willing to pay taxes for the growing number of those retired?

Yes to All. Welcome to the western world. :)

UK, Ireland / Polish Thoughts on Britain and the British [273]

its important to remember that we have many highly qualified and experienced brits who are also unable to find the sort of work they feel they should be doing... you are probably competing with these people... they have advantages over you...

I see the same Magd's attitude here in the US. Educated people from Poland expect to get the same high paying jobs as the american people. They think that because they have a degree from Poland all doors will be open for them. Well, you need to compete just like everybody also. The best one wins. Many end up in less paying jobs or menial jobs because of the feeling of entitlement. You are entitled to nothing, unless you can convince and prove to the employer that you are better than others.

People tend to be around people who behave and think the same. It's the comfort zone.
People who live in the suburbs tend to be different than people who live in the city. People who live in the "bad" parts of the city behave different than people who live in the expensive parts of the city etc.

When I grew up in Poland and was friends with a girl who was not up to my Mom's standards she would tell me: "kto z kim przystaje takim sie staje", which would translate to "you are as the people you hang around with". This particular girl was... well, somewhat slutty, but really fun to be around. My Mom believed that by hanging around with her, everybody will think the same about me. Wasn't she right? She was.

The point is, if you don't like the environment you are in - change it. Life is about choices, don't expect anything handed to you on the silver platter. Work at it. It really pays in a long run.

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

Poland is a new kid on the block and has to learn a lot, but I would not be that pessimistic. I twill have its turn, some day.

However, as long as the government will not provide good paying jobs for the young and educated, they will go to UK or other countries to build their power.

Only, to bashed for it by the host.

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

The foreign countries for sure are very grateful for such a present .... a high -skilled people for free.

That's exactly what I mean. All the free resource, a gift to the western world.

I sometimes think that those who left took what they thought was the easy route

I agree. Many young people are not determined enough to find a job they want and are qualified for. Just like here, it takes 6 months to a year to find the job you want.

News / Polish Keyboard with the Polish alphabet? [30]

Does anybody know where I can purchase one?

There is a polish shopping mall on Irving Park Rd. A store in there has a software you can buy and install (CD). It was maybe two years ago when I inquired. Hopefully they are still there...

Irving Park Rd, a little bit east of Harlem Ave. They have Wally's Supermarket in there too.

News / Polish Keyboard with the Polish alphabet? [30]

This is simpler than working with Word.

Assuming you work with Windows XP:
1. Control Panel
2. date, Time, language and Regional..
3. add other languages
4. details
5. key settings - choose Polish (Programmers)
6. add - it should put the icon in your task bar
7. click Language bar next to key settings to see if the adding of the icon to the task bar is checked.

It should work. Then type as usual. When you come to a letter that you want it to have a little "thingy" press Alt & Ctr at the same time and voila: śćżź

Make sure that the language bar icon in the task bar is checked for polish"programmers'.
It defaults to English

Life / Polish people have low self-esteem? [80]

The only time I'd say Polish girls are reserved is when there in direct communication with English girls. They tend to be afraid of English girls.

Lee, maybe... just maybe they are somewhat intimidated because their English is not always fluent enough to make a deep conversation.
Conversing with you guys... no big language skills are needed, none for some perhaps... just mere attraction will do :)

Genealogy / Poland- Stories from the Ancestors Homeland [20]

A wild life story...sniffed by a fox.
I was 11 or 12 years old and walked to school about 1km (less than a mile). My walk was throughout a real nice, thick pine forest. My father was a forest ranger and we lived in a beautiful house called 'lesniczowka'. There were no houses between our home and the school. It was a winter, February or March, and there was still a lot of snow. I followed a path made by people walking to cut across going to the next village over.( It was much shorter walk than using the road.) As I walked, I suddenly heard a strange noise behind me. I looked back and there were two wild, red faxes running on the path straight at me. My heart skipped a beat and I moved slightly to the side. The first one passed me by running, the beautiful fluffy tail brushed my long, winter coat...but the second one slowed down and then stopped. I froze and I did not look at him, just observed him from the corner of my eye. I did not move. (My father always said not make sudden moves, if we (kids) come across a wild animal). The fax stood there and I was just imagining the moment he will bare his teeth and bite me...then I get rabies and die before anybody can save me...

Well, it did not happen. He just sniffed my coat...hasitated a little and off he went after the first one. My knees were shaking a little and I was not sure, if I should turn around and go back home or keep on going ahead. However, being a brav, forest girl and not wanting to miss my class I followed the foxes. I did not see them again.

When I told my parents about my adventure, my father jokingly said that after sniffing me the fox realized that I was "a wrong female" so he went after the one he was chasing already... :)

News / The Polish Economy and its future [101]

Artur, I really like your forecast. If it happens, I may go back to Poland to retire and give English lessons part time :)

Kidding aside, after the past and current struggles, Poland will thrive. You guys need to get rid of all the communist and post communist people in government.

Please vote. It's the best you can do for the country.

Food / Is there McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut etc in Poland? Food survey. [222]

I think Poles are still in a decent shape comparing to western dwellers. Some may be just pleasantly plump, but not grossly obese (ok, a few are). I left Poland in 1980 and the amount of HUGE people on the street was shocking to me. My aunt in Poland always complained that she is fat. I wrote back to her that she could be a model comparing to a lot of people on the street (she was about 180 Ibs then).

Guess what, they got bigger since then and I gained 17 pounds since my arrival. Some people gain more than that in a year. IT'S THE FOOD plus the convenience of a car and an elevator in a 3 story building. As I literally run up the stairs, my fellow Americans are waiting for an elevator! People love to dig their grave with a fork and a knife, if you know what I mean. This might be a blunt statement, but it's time to zip the mouth for many.

News / The Polish Economy and its future [101]

Poles are great as individual workers, but poor as far as group work is concerned.

Yes, I agree. Poles need to learn how to work as team. When there is a group of polish people they don't seem to agree on anything. One is smarter than the other. Let the smartest one lead.

USA, Canada / American attitude towards Poland [89]

Artur, kids are cruel everywhere. They will always call each other names. It does not matter if the other kid is Polish, Mexican, fat, wearing glasses or having freckles and red hair - just to name a few "reasons". I attended a grade and a high school in Poland.

Oh, the names the kids could call each other! And, we were ALL THE SAME!
It's just a part of growing up.

I think Tomek is curious of our life style in general (as comparing to life in Poland).
