History / MONSTERS AND DRAGONS OF POLAND...are there any...? [42]

Every child knows about Baba Jaga z £ysej Góry and now you'll know too. :)
A fragment taken from the link below. I couldn't possibly describe any better the monster I was scared with as a kid. Especially living in or nearby of huge kieleckie forests and not too far from Lysa Gora. Speaking of a childhood trauma...hehehe :) Just kidding, being sniffed by a fox was much, much scarier!

"Perhaps the most well known figure appearing in Polish folk tales is
BabaYaga/Jedza/Wiedzma/Czarownica. She is an old witch with magical powers.
In the middle of the forest, she sits and spins in her hut supported by bird's feet. Her thread is made of bones and entrails of the dead and her hut is surrounded with a fence of human skulls and bones. The house itself seems to be made

out of parts of the human body. She rides in a mortar, pushing herself along with a pestle,
and sweeping with a birch broom. The mortar and the pestle are simultaneously
instruments of destruction and nurture, serving both to grind grain and prepare flax for
spinning cloth. They also symbolize human sexual organs. Riding the pestle or the broom
(in Polish folklore), Yaga rules over the masculine generative organ. BabaYaga cooks
and eats human flesh, her cannibalistic tendencies recalling memories of human sacrifice.
She is a birth and a death giver. In order to achieve whatever she
considers necessary for life on earth to continue, she may transform into a bird, a reptile,
or a fish. Just like Mother Earth, she feeds and devours life. Although Baba Yaga-the
old hag--has been demonized, in folk tales we can still perceive her positive qualities. In
fact, she is "good" and "bad,' young and old, concurrently. She devours children, but she
helps couples to reunite; she appears as a horrifying, bird of prey-like old woman, but she
is also the beautiful and wise princess, or the young maiden..."

USA, Canada / HOLY SATURDAY FOOD BELSSING IN YOUR AREA? [13]

Here in Denver, Colorado the Święconka tradition is alive

I had no idea we invaded Denver as well. Would it be safe to assume that most of them are highlanders?

The catholic church in my suburb also had a small, basket blessing event, so the locals would not have to drive to other suburbs or to the city.

Food / POLISH "CHEMICALISED" CONVENIENCE FOODS [23]

Actually, conventionally grown carrots are not as bad as strawberries, spinach, peppers or peaches. The mentioned above are the most polluted, so if you can help it buy them organic. That's what my health foods magazines tell me. Anything that you eat most often, including apples and milk, pasta or bread - the organics are a better choice. You don't need to worry about most of the veggies and fruit, as long as they are throughly washed (3 min under running water). OK, it's a kind of waste of water but I'd rather waste water than ingest unnecessary chemicals they are sprayed with. Anyway...works for me. :)

I am somewhat surprised that Poland went so quickly for the convenience of packaged, frozen foods. The younger generation thinks that food comes in a package...

then comes a variety of health problems starting with allergies. After all, our body cells have to scream for help at some point being contaminated with ingredients they can not use as fuel and don't know what to do with. The health symptoms star to appear. Rings the bell for anybody over 40? And, if you're not there yet, think about it. You are what you eat.

Life / Researching Polish Culture for a speech... need help! [24]

Wildrover, I'm sure you've seen the cemeteries on that day too. There are lots of candles lit on each grave. When the evening comes and you drive home after visiting the graves of your beloved, you can pinpoint exactly where another cemetery is... the radiant aurora gives it away, the sky is lit! I was always in awe when I looked at it.

Life / Researching Polish Culture for a speech... need help! [24]

I agree. There is no better way to learn about the people and the country than having a good meal and a few beers with them! Everything also is just a "hearsay".

I'm glad you experienced the reality. You can take it or leave then.

Life / Researching Polish Culture for a speech... need help! [24]

Spalko, just search this website "polish culture", "Polish Christmas", "Polish Easter"...etc.
You'll find lots of information when you read the topics. Yes, you'll need some time to do that, but it should be worth the time. Don't forget the "polish swear words"! Hehehe.

Good luck!

Life / What should be done to make life in Poland better and more enjoyable? [94]

I don't live in Poland, but here the quirks my family complains about:

If you have a doctor's or a dentist's appointment, please respect your clients time.
I don't need to show in your office at appointment time only to wait another 2 or three hours (beacuse you stroll into the office late yourself).

When I go to the town hall to get some kind of business (or not) certification, don't make hop through many multiple hoops and request tons of additional proof, including signatures and original stamps.

Be nice and helpful to me when I ask for an item I don't seem to locate in Biedronka.
You don't need to take my hand and lead me there, but pointing in the right direction with a smile would make feel appreciated.

Please don't sit behind that bullet proof glass at the Bank, pretend being busy, so I can stand there expecting to be invited to the window to do my business, which is also yours.

OK, that's the few I heard recently.

Love / Advice from Polish Girls please :) [54]

How about slipping a nice, short note with your phone number on it at the time of paying for groceries? Say in the note that you like her a lot and would like to ask her out. You may also fold and pin the note to a single flower (not a red one); after that just wait for you phone to ring! :)

Life / Easter presents for Polish people? [14]

Make sure you bring some gifts for the kids (if there are any) nothing big... "eggs" filled with candy will do. You are on the right track, a bouquet of spring flowers or a box of chocolates... as long as you're not empty handed, the wine is fine too.

UK, Ireland / Negative attitude towards Polish immigration in UK becoming stronger [90]

''romaniannnnnnn nooooooo u need a proof of address''

You need to show a document (or two) with your address on it and I'm sure it works the same in Romania as well as in any country. You can't just walk in and open an account saying your name and address to the clerk. No need to feel insulted. I'm sure you had to do it when you opened your account. Right?

Life / How many people really know English in Poland? [53]

Matyjasz's remark about people above 40 is very true.

Well..they were only around 20 when Poland officially was no longer under the commie rule, why didn't they start learn then?

I would not expect anybody over 50 or 60 to know another language, but most people under the age group had a chance already. Yes, many young people are pretty good at English now, but still not enough.

Life / What's your favourite Polish cartoon? [10]

It was actually a Japanese cartoon, very popular in Poland in 70's, I think.

Love / Discussion about Polish Men's Tempers [103]

It's been always portrait in jokes..a wife with a "kluski" roller to greet her no goodnik husband coming late home. Really, no real violence here. Don't get all excited onecent. Polish wives know how to handle their men with or without the roller.

Travel / Tatry Mountains Poland / First Snow [29]

Darn Al Gore, messing with people's minds...but, heck..most people are gullible. You can tell them anything. I'm glad that people in Canada and Chicago screw the 'Inconvenient Truth"..year by year. LOL.

Life / Is drinking water in Poland good? [96]

"Polish Spring" comes from Michigan I believe, just purified. Might as well drink it from the tap. It's just a lovely marketing touch.

I buy Nalęczowianka instead. Imported from Poland. Really.

Food / favorite polish recipes? [65]

i tried to make potato pancakes once and would've gotten sick if I ate all of them because they didn't cook all the way through

Lol. Don't make them so thick...anyway a raw potato would not likely make you sick. Maybe there was something also that you you've eaten?

Love / Polish girls' obsession with marriage [124]

Oh, no southern...the girl is pressuring you to marry her? No, you can't do that. There are too many women and too little time to be just with the one! You know, you love them all, why settle for one? :)

History / Fall of Communism in Poland [33]

I don't think anyone would buy it. Probably they are not worth too much tho.

Hey, if a potato chip with seemingly Holy Mary's shape on it got sold...anything can be. After all, it is a historic ID.

I wonder if any of them sold their communist party membership ID on ebay...
