David, as far I remember, we always had a X-mas dinner on X-mas Eve and is called Wigilia. There should be 12 different items on the table (12 apostles) and an empty plate because NOBODY should be alone that night. Traditionally, there is no meat and alcohol allowed. Anybody could be a guest that evening ( I don't think anybody opens a door for someone they don't know nowadays :(, however). Gifts were usually for kids only. There was no X-mas shopping hoopla when I grew up in Poland.

The fruit cake is an awfully tasting cake and in my 27 years in the US, I had it only once.

Some Americans make fun of the way British speak and I bet it is mutual! :)
The pronunciation of many words is different (sounds harder and "choppy" in British, but slower and more "mumbled" in USA) and when a foreign person who learns British hears the same in American English, it sounds like a new word they don't know.

And who is to say that Americans do not use it properly? Or the British?

When I came to the US as a young and lovely girl :) I could not "chase away" all arabic men going after me in College, as well as from South America! They all seem to want a piece of really white meat! Ha. Ha. At the end, I even dated one man from Jordan, adored him, but I knew I could NEVER marry him.

We eventually split and I married a polish man. We are divorced now and I date mostly American men. It is hard for me to meet polish men now. The ones I met did not have a legal status and I was not sure, if they love me or they love the "vision" of a green card...

Personally, since "bossie" asked on Nov 19th, there are races and ethnic groups I never felt attracted to and would not date.

Nope. Her English is very poor. And, yes she had English for 3 years. Her 'school" English is not good enough to have a conversation. Besides, Americans speak different than the British English taught in Poland.

I understand she had French in middle school. (unfortunately).

There is nothing wrong with a humble begining and any job which payes the bills. However, the educated ones should always strive to do better. I know a young girl (21) who was attending university in Poland, but now she cleans houses. She doesn't even go to school in the evening to learn more english.

Yet, she wants to stay here. What kind of future is she going to have?

Yes, it takes getting used to a new place no matter what part of the world or a country it is.
I moved from Poland to The US in 1980. The weather in Illinois is comparable and I did not need to adapt. That was the easy part :)

I'm sure your wife rather be in Canada than in Poland. Life is still pretty hard there.

Well boss, I'm surprised that out of 85% of polish workers, there is nobody who can speak English enough to tell you what they like. Krysia is right on the cold meat cuts, bread, pretzels, mixed nuts. I don't know what you offered that they did not like... :)

December 6th is St.Nicolaus day and kids get small gifts under the pillow or just candy, if they are good. The naughty ones may get a wooden stick ( a little twig) as a symbol for punishment.

Never heard of gifts put in the shoes.

My cousin lives in Canada (Manitoba). He would move to The US if he could - in no time. Too cold for him. However it is beautiful there. I loved Ontario. The forest is amazing.

Maati, there lots and lots educated, polish slaves in Chicago. I don't blame the ones who want to make a quick buck in a year or two and go back, but some are here 5, 10, 15 years!! Na domkach: taking care of children or some elderly sick person.

No language. No life. Just this "needy" family left in Poland who thinks that money grows on trees. They want cars, furniture, expensive clothes or just cash.

And the "slave" stays another year longer, and then another... Sad.

Americans don't like the French and it is mutual. My sister went to Poland via Paris and stayed there a few days. When she talked in English to the ordinary French people she met, and was asked where she was from (accent) she was saying - "from United States". She could 'feel" the chill in the conversation after that, but when she said she was Polish, they were much nicer. Isn't it strange?

Yes, we are strong. In most families the women are in charge of the family budget. My mother was, her sisters and now...my sisters and me... :) Single polish women who are my friends in Chicago, have good jobs, own their houses etc. Of course, there are planty of households where the man is in charge.

I work with American women. Their husbands are in charge. Again, not a rule, but that's what I see. A couple of my single, American friends seems to struggle more.

Yes, Krakow is a very beautiful, old city, a forgotten European marvel... I think, polish people don't know how to advertise themselves...too modest. We even do not dispute other's opinion of us. This makes us an easy target.
