You point out that we are a state with high level of censorship although you are unable to provide any certain proof.

You seem to not understande "strange rules". Well Boy we are a eastern european culture and a catholic one and if I am right you are from India and your culture is obviously very different from ours.

So I'm 100% sure that if I would go to your country I would also be very confused with all the rules and life styles there. Well at least we dont call our selves a democratic country and then go masacre people because of religion differences what happenes in India (sic!)

As for politics and war in Iraq. Some poles dont like our goverment some do. It's called democracy and everybody has a right to say what they think and feel about our government - get used to it. Same thing is with Iraqii war which is a part of our current state agenda and I dont see how is that any of your concerns.

Some might be reading this post and think its filled with hate and perhaps you are RIGHT. I'm simply fed up with all the people grumble and grief about our country on this forums and afterwards they say they want to move here (cuz obviously they want citzenship, education, work). My answer is, if you dont like it here, dont wan't to get used to the living here, then simply STAY IN YOUR COUNTRY.

Language / Which books is it essential to have read to be a good Polish student? [23]

Marek if you want to understand and get to know polish culture even a bit you should try reading some of the clasics.

Unfortunately some of them might be realy hard to read. I myself love books with the medieval and reneisance setting.
"Krzyżacy" is a great book telling a story of great victory of polish-lithuanian comonwealth.
Then there is a set of book with the 16-17th houndrets setting. Those books are crucial for understanding polish culture and the way we look at things. They might answer to many of you questions. And as somebody already wrote here, those books would be "Potop" "Ogniem i Mieczem" "Pan Włodyjowski". They're great literature and I enjoyed reading them but if you dont have guts for it... well there is still hope for you because there are movie version of those books.

Then there is literature with the setting of polish uprisings and fighting with the foreign oppresors. A good book from that era would be "Przedwiośnie" (there is also a movie ver.:))

Then there is lots of books with the setting of early XX century, 2nd WW. ]
I myself loved "Kamienie na Szaniec" Its a book about a group of young scouts who become freedom fighters when Poland gets attacked in 1939. The beuty of this book is that its based on facts and I can say that its 99% verified true.

There is also a rather large group of books with the setting of WW but from other angle... the angle of concentration camps and jewish minority. I cant recall any good titles since I despised those books and were simply unable to read more the 50pages of any of those books.

This whole thing is some sort of big sham.
Basicaly the permission to built was given at first but it turned out that the owner of the area was one of the politicians and thats why he was pusing so hard to sell the land to the government.

The land is a natural park and wasnt giving him much of an income. He forged some documents made it look all legit and he would get away with it if not a bunch of ecologists who went on strike.

thats pretty much it. as always it all happened because one ignorant bastard wanted to make more money.

well did you stay at his place during that time? if yes then the answer is simple, he is a conservative catholic and it was better for him to sleep in the bed with his sister then share the bed with you and then having his sister come back to Poland telling the whole family that he's sleeping with a british girl on the side without a proper mariage.

If he was so conservative as I think it would explain why he would pull up his sister trausers (which i don't think is disgusting). He might not be perfectly happy that his little sis is running around with her trousers low and showing her body - some conservative men can be control freaks.

Yeah, I don't see the point of your trying to implement polish in your classes it will only make you and rest of the class confused along side with the polish youngster.

So what that the bar for him will bet set high at his new school a slightly bigger learning curve didnt hurt anyone(I only feel bad for him that he'll have to put up with the british education system;P). He's a young kid so he will learn fast and 5 year olds dont realy use that complicated vocabulary.

Ok you can stop telling me how and where write in my language. I've been using english mostly and helping some of you with translations because I realy like this forums site and its concept. But sometimes I will use polish languange when communicating with polish people like I did in this thread.

Dont expect that every time everything will be handed to you in your language, its definately not the way to learn foreign languages.
If what I did was so annoying then make an effort and try translating it on your own.

Well I dont like smoking in pubs and restaurants.
But to be perectly honest with you its maybe better the way it is right now.
There are pubs and restaurants were you are forbiden to smoke but if you go to a typical bar you will probably deal with smokers it's your choice. And since when the government should tell private pub/restaurant owners how they should I ran their business.

As one comedian once said (I think it was Lewis Black):

yeah Thats exactly my point. The forums shouldnt be only for bunch for british and americans who would like to know what pierogi are or would like to chat up a polish bloke. NO. Polonia and polish fom different parts of the world should also have their place to meet and chat about what ever they wish.

The whole fuss started about that. I wrote a question which was for polish men because I was curious what was their point of view.

People here say they're intrested in Poland or have other business that in some way involves poles and polish language. But everone gets upset when people start speaking polish? C'mon dont be that ignorant. I speak russian, german, french and english besides my national language so I guess everybody else could also make an effort and at least be more opened to polish language.

Plus as plk123 said, it would be a great way for polonia to stay in touch with polish language and for other people to learn it and interact with it.

You all cant be asking poles to translate your text messages to the end of your lives.

I dont think there is a problem. I believe that there are wives and families that visit each other and there are families that dont. Its a simple choice made by humans. I dont think it has nothing to do with nationality.

well getting a pasport is a small expence of about 30 american dollars.
And it will take you about 1week-4weeks to get your passport after applying for it (its the beurocracy thats all)

I dont want to be rude, but If a guy says that his wife cannot visit him because she doesnt have a passport then he is obviously ************. Cuz getting a passport is no Chinese Wall that cannot be passed.

well if he's married as he's saying and he has no photos nor his wive visites him well then...
I can see only two logical explenation (although there must be more because life can be very complicated)
1)he's just ******* around in UK
2)he married her some time ago(maybe they got a kid together, and thats only why he married her in the first place) now he's in UK and wants a fresh start. They might no longer even live together but they will not take a divorce for some family reasons- taking a divorce in Poland might be a very complicated process, sometimes both sides want it and still the judge will not allow it if it might hurt family and kids.

well if it helps you... there might be economical reasons.
Lets say they dont live together anymore but they didnt take a divorce as well.
If she's staying at home he's probably supporting her all the time but dosnt realy have to pay that much...so he has enough cash for himself and lives like a bachelor.

Prenups arent that popular in Poland so if they didnt have one and they got divorced.
He would be the one called responsible for the divorce since he left the family home and poland (thats 100% possible scenario especialy if the judge would be a women).

Now if they got divorced, Polish law states that he might have to give her even half of his pay for about 3 years. And It would be for much longer if he was declared guilty of the divorce. it might hurt his wallet a lot.

I know what I'm saying cuz I'm in the law school.

We are in Eu now and inside EU we can travel using ID cards, Every single pole has an ID card - its a must have.

which has all your basic information on it, some digital prints and citizenship number.
