The European Commission sought a court order on Monday to block the construction of a Polish motorway through a protected wildlife area which the country looks set to resume this week.

The Commission asked the European Court of Justice to order Poland to halt preparatory work through the northeastern Rospuda Valley, which is known for its peat bogs and is home to rare plants and animals.

just wonder what the view of this issue is back in the motherland

It's a bit difficult to clean up some rivers as they originate in other countries. There is a program in place to clean up air polution. It has been in place for quite some time.

This whole thing is some sort of big sham.
Basicaly the permission to built was given at first but it turned out that the owner of the area was one of the politicians and thats why he was pusing so hard to sell the land to the government.

The land is a natural park and wasnt giving him much of an income. He forged some documents made it look all legit and he would get away with it if not a bunch of ecologists who went on strike.

thats pretty much it. as always it all happened because one ignorant bastard wanted to make more money.

I don't really like It but I understand that It's a part of the whole deal, we get many things from EU but also have to do many things according to EU rules.

wisla?

all others get very little polution at their point of beginning.. most start in remote mountains.

is this a similar excuse the gov uses? since you said that the program has been in place for some time.. is there any actual progress or is it all smoke and mirrors?

True.

I have no idea about the government's stance. Air pollution: I read about it years ago. It's not something I care to keep up with.

Poland has its polluted bits but overall I'd say it's clean and actually getting cleaner as a lot of old-style communist heavy industry had been dismantled. Which means less jobs but more fresh air.

Paradoxically I have seen the most attractive and preserved nature in former communist countries.Huge forests, lakes, rivers etc.I think if they were to be exploited in market way, they would not have remained the same so long.Especially in Ukraine the extent of forest land is unbelievable.

A committee of the European Parliament has called on Poland to find a different route for a planned motorway across the north of the country.
