Genealogy / How to research Polish WW2 Uniforms [6]

Does anyone know of how to research a navy uniform from WW2? I have a photo of my grandfather in (?dress) uniform and I'd like to know more about it. I have tried some sites but to no avail.

Genealogy / My mum is Polish and father is Polish/German. History of my background - I'm 1st generation Aus [3]

Hi, If you're parents or other relatives came by boat to OZ, then you can look that info up at the National Archives of Australia. Many poles went to the USA so you can also go to ancestry.com and that has HEAPS of info. At this site you can post a message (or see if other people/relo's are doing the same thing!) looking for US relatives who can steer you in the right direction. I learnt alot there and I also got in touch with a distant cousin who filled in alot of gaps!

News / American wanting to know about views from Poland [37]

I went to the US 2 years ago and I found alot of them, especially in 'the south' to be very nice and welcoming. But I must say that their knowledge of their own accents is pretty bad. My friend and I were chatting away in our aussie accents in the line at wal-mart in North Carolina, when the guy in front of us asked us if we were from Alabama!!!????!!!

Life / Polish Country Music [5]

I just saw this guy 'Lonstar' on a doco on tv about 30 mins ago (SBS Melbourne). He's some sort of country music singer - totally americanised by the look of it. I love country music but hearing it sung in Polish was def weird.

Life / Polish Country Music [5]

Maybe watching too many american westerns

Close! This guy said his father used to listen to some illegal US radio broadcast (very dangerous during communist times) while he was growing up in Poland and that one day his father left the radio on and a country music show came on and he fell in love. He apparently has a line dancing school too!

Love / Polish Engagement and Wedding Traditions [42]

I once saw a wedding video from Poland - the reception went FOREVER and they played all these games, which, honestly, I found really annoying rather than fun - and by the look on many faces, they did too! I think by the time it was over - sometime near dawn, the 'happy couple' were exhausted - so much for the wedding night!

Hi B, yes I think the band was crap! I think a good band makes a big difference, naturally. I've been to a few polish weddings in Oz and they played a few games - which were entertaining and funny - the best fun was boogie-ing... I always have fun at these weddings and polish people here tend to booze it up bigtime and that always makes for more laughs...

Australia / Polish Language - Social Sports/Clubs/Newspapers in Melbourne [6]

Hi Peter, which part of Melbourne are you in? Check out past posts for info on where to hook up with others. A good place to start is the "Dziupla" website - it has one section in english and now often has an english translation for events. There are a few polish clubs around - depends where you are. You could also try polish newspapers but you'd need someone to translate them for you... Good luck with the hunt... PS if i find out any etxra info will let you know...

Genealogy / Info on Poles in German work camps 1943-45 [7]

There's a great website to find family sent to German work camps: straty.pl. Type in the surname (or town of birth in the advanced search).

Genealogy / Info on Poles in German work camps 1943-45 [7]

Hi Bobby, the advanced search is the 2nd tab from the left 'zaawansowane' Type in the surname - 1st box or the place of birth - 6th box down. It pays to type in any towns that are nearby too. I also found that if you aren't using the polish alphabet it skips names. So going by the town gives you better results.

Australia / Dziupla Disco in North Melbourne [5]

From the Dziupla website: Wiec w sumie skad ta nazwa Dziupla? Bardzo proste: gniazdo dla nas emigrantow, w ktorym czujemy sie dobrze i zawsze do niego wracamy.

I guess its like a nest or a safe place where emigrants congregate, always come back to, where you feel at home, feel safe/good. So it was started by this lady Gosia and has grown over the years from humble beginnings. Its a series of functions she organises over the year - a few 'discos', a couple Balls as well as smaller get togethers. I don't speak polish although i can understand, read and write OK - and i found Dziupla to always be welcoming and lots of fun. 95% of the music they play is in english and the poles always bring their non-polish friends with them - so you don't feel out of place at all there. What i love about the discos is that its just like going to a bar/club but much friendlier and for us chicks, alot safer too. Its the kind of place you can leave your wallet on the table and no one touches it! But the same can't be said for your vodka!!!!

If you want to go along by yourself, you can sit at the bar. Or if I get a table you can sit with us... Cheers

It's on again this saturday the 26th.

Australia / Swieto Sportowe - Albion, Melbourne 23-24 Feb 08 [5]

For those who aren't aware, there is a polish sports carnival on this weekend at the Polish recreational centre in Albion @ 19 Carrington Drive ( just off the Ring Rd near Sunshine/Deer Park). Sunday is the main day with a Mass at 9am, followed by some entertainment, such as folk dancing and various sporting activities, such as football, athletics, volley ball and an open air market. Lots of people, lots of food and drinks, activities for the littlies. There is an admission fee per car, something like $4. I'm planning on going.. my niece will be dancing... very cute!

Did anyone go? I just went in the morning for a couple of hours. Since when was riding a mechanical bull a sport!!!!

This bull had no legs! and thank goodness because from the 'athletes' ( and by that I mean middle aged polish men with something to prove) that took it, it seems if this sport is take off, it needs some serious federal funding and a special institute for training. Quite funny really.

Hej DJP, these events are good for socialising, you meet up with people you don't see regulalry so thats nice. They often have a market so you can buy music and dvds, jewellery, bit and pieces, polish apparell etc. There are alot of poles here in Melbourne spread out but especially in the northern and eastern suburbs. So, whats the project???

Genealogy / Old Gorzow Cemetery - help to find it? [10]

Me and a mate will visit Gorzów to september.

Maybe if i go to Poland next year I can find it myself. I think they built a park over it, better than office blocks i guess.
