Law / Linux, Unix, and Open Source in Poland [119]

PolskaDoll, it would be a good idea to delete all postings from #90 and beyond, because they do not related to Poland at all.

True, they don't but they at least have to do with the operating systems involved (plus a bit of arguing ;) but lets move on and discuss

plus the other stuff that previously did relate to these OS's in PL.. :)

Law / Linux, Unix, and Open Source in Poland [119]

Sorry PolskaDoll, we kind of got carried away.. I've wasted my time answering somebody who was just teasing me. You can delete all of my posts on this page..

It's interesting stuff for computer buffs :) but lets try to keep it relevant to the uses of the software and operating systems in Poland and where is can lead to in the future. There is no doubt that Microsoft has made some errors recently and people are searching for other options but are those options available in Poland? If Poland surges ahead and uses other options other than those that Microsoft provide will it be more useful for them or will it hinder Poland because other countries still rely so much on Microsoft?

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

While there may be a lot of stories about Polish girls who have done this to unsuspecting males, there is going to be that one time the story from the Polish girl is true. I don't know if it is true or not nor does anyone here. Miranda posted that she knows a girl it happened to so we can't immediately deny these things happen.

Ireland32, can you not speak to her friends/flatmates in Ireland and find out if they have heard from her? If they haven't and you tell them that story you might get a bit further. Also, if this is a story from her then one of them might kindly tell you that. You also said that the ex-boyfriend had taken her phone. Have you tried calling it from a number that neither her or the ex-boyfriend know? If she answers then she's either been caught out in a lie or she has her phone back and finally you get some information. If the ex-boyfriend answers it then you also have an answer. Have you tried emailing her?

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

They do have ciggie dispensers at checkouts, quite normal.

I can't say all, because I don't know. But most, Yes.

I've been thinking about this...I have a vague recollection of supermarkets here having something like that but it would be when I was a child (while ago ;)

Very often with big supermarkets it's: distance from home, cost, size of car park and speed/time of round trip.

That makes sense.

Thanks for the info, PD.

You're welcome.

I have also seen them here in the UK at a branch of somerfields by the checkouts.

Eek, it might not have been my childhood then...

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

Yes, they are appearing here now. Not many so far but they're arriving. It's an off-shoot of the John Lewis group I think.

Waitrose is touted as a better supermarket than Tesco's, Asda etc but the one I sometimes go to doesn't look any different inside to Tesco, Sainsbury's or many others. Waitrose is pricier but it's fine for just grabbing a few items. (Same as M&S). Now if you're ever in Edinburgh go to Jenners Food Hall...that's pricey! ;)

JustysiaS is right, why are these supermarkets like Tesco or Lidl seen as for poorer people? Because the food is cheaper? Well, more fool the person who pays the higher price.

Actually I have a question going back to my picture yesterday. The individual cigarette dispensers at the check outs, are they the norm in Polish supermarkets? Is there no small kiosk for buying cigarettes and a newspaper? Also a lot of the bigger supermarkets here have things like cafes, dry cleaners in them, are they like this in Poland?

UK, Ireland / List of goods taken from living in the UK [64]

durable bread

Is stuffed full of crap preservatives. I'd rather have fresh, baked in the day bread. You can buy small loaves of it you know. ;)

Genealogy / Any information available on the Przedecz camp? [13]

The OP says she died in 1947 not that she died in the camp in 1947. It may be poor grammar but the OP means his grandmother died in Przedecz in 1947, not the camp. Sometimes you need to read things more than once to understand what they mean.

Genealogy / Any information available on the Przedecz camp? [13]

There was a labour camp at Inowroclaw about 44 miles North West of Przedecz. That's close enough. The OP may have had information that his relative was in a camp near Przedecz.

Type in "Chłopi komuna" in google images and you'll find his "family" between pages 23 and 25 i'll dig it up again,

I did look but can't find the picture.

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

Quick question, in the attached picture, above the checkouts there seems to be something that looks like a computer monitor suspended from the ceiling. If it is a computer monitor what would it be showing? I haven't seen anything like that before.

Edit: It's a flickr image so just follow the link...

Feedback / Why was my last post deleted and censored? [21]

last year, when the forums were basically unmoderated,

I don't understand that bit, it's been moderated since it opened in 05 and certainly last year it was moderated by myself, Admin and a few others.

Feedback / Why was my last post deleted and censored? [21]

they were removed to a random chat thread. I would have no way of knowing this without being informed, short of telepathy.

As I said, if you checked your own profile and looked at your latest replies you would see random chat there and if you'd clicked on it at that time it would have taken you to that post.

In the rule it says recommended. It doesn`t mean obligatory.

Correct. It's just nicer to have a short quote from the article in order to know the content but posts aren't moved for not having a quote.

Furthermore, the censorship is done in stealth, so that we can never get a full image of what is going on. Is blatant censorship of substantiated arguments about British anti-Americanism blocked here, but virulent racism and neo-nazi posturing is not?

Technically it's a Polish forum and your British/American chatter was going on in a thread about a DJ who said something about Poles. The last two posts from that thread were removed to random chat (not deleted - please check your own profile and your latest posting list) where you can continue that line of conversation or indeed start a thread in the off-topic lounge.

Posts are rarely deleted here. That's a fact members should acknowledge. Random Chat exists for a reason.

that her post should have been deleted.

They were NOT deleted.

UK, Ireland / going to uk to look for a cad job - are there any left? [21]

There are probably plently of CAD job vacancies, there ususally is and I saw a few on the website linked 1job.co.uk/category.php/8193/London/66/Engineering%20Design%20-%20CAD so it's worth having a look. I think the person they would favour is the person who was qualified for the job, nationality doesn't come into it. Although, a good knowledge of the English language would.

Food / Polish cake and pastry menu for coffee shop. [37]

I'm not really into cakes and pastries but I have to think of a menu of Polish cakes or pastries that would possibly be sold in a coffee shop so please could PFers give me some idea of what should be on that menu?

Thank you. :)

Feedback / Where is PF heading (Site Interface/Design wise) in the future? [21]

I would personally like to see a voting system similar to some websites such as digg.com whereby if somebody posts something negative and off topic it can be 'buried' based on what other forum users think, in the same way it can be voted up to indicate it is a good post in the opinions of the forum users. If this happened the forum would become somewhat self moderating with cyberpunks like noimmi's vulgar comments being buried and only accessible to those who want to read them.

I watched a trial of this on another forum a couple of months ago and it didn't last a week. What happened in that case was people just negatively voted for people they didn't like so their posts were voted against regardless of whether they were relevant or not. So in that sense, self-moderation didn't work. Another way it didn't work was that users just couldn't be bothered with it.

There is another way you can "self-moderate" when it comes to posters like noimmigration, just don't react to them. :)

Love / Younger foreign man dating older polish women ? [28]

I still wait for answers from Polish people or from people living in Poland more recently

Really what are you waiting for? You've had some good ideas here so far both from Polish people and people living in Poland.

This woman you search will not come looking for you, you'll have to search for her. Perhaps join a dating site where you can be specific about what you seek...
