Life / How do you Poles feel about the fact that so many Poles work abroad? [145]

Whatt do you mean above? Don't you exaggerate a bit?

No...I read it somewhere on the BBC (months ago) that immigration of Poles had hit a peak then was beginning to subside. It looked like some of them had done what they intended in the UK and were ready to return home, with money made abroad to buy homes and start their lives.

I imagine they would be plenty homesick, too....I know I would be....even if just for the food. :)

Love / Soldier born in Poland / living in England. Fiance going away for ages. Complicated... [205]

Hey look at the bright side.....you don't have to listen to any snoring for a while, or pick up dirty socks! hehe :)

Make him leave some of his clothes behind that smell like him.....to make him seem close.

I once slept in a BF's coat for a month (at night in winter instead of using a blanket because it had his scent)...and I cried myself to sleep every night.

Love / Soldier born in Poland / living in England. Fiance going away for ages. Complicated... [205]

My two cents worth....

Relationships are a series of hurdles to jump....some bigger, some smaller.
After this, if you do get married, it could be new issues with in-laws, where to live, how to handle finances, when or if to have kids, how to raise the kids, where to relocate if one of you gets a better job, or if (god forbid) one of you gets sick...the possiblities of challenges are endless.

No one ever knows what lies down the road....or when you will hit a bump that you can't handle. For every couple it is something different....some things couples breeze through, but others find them to be a deal-breaker.

When a couple DOES get through a crisis point, and then another, and then another...it builds up confidence in the relationship. You may have heard people say "We've gotten through worse things than this....we'll get through this too!" If you know you got through a long wait before...you know already know that you can do it again. You know what will be the most difficult for you and you can look for ways to offset the hard times (friends, family, a hobby, a class).

I feel that the key to getting through this will be for the two of you to step up your communication with each other, and focus on the positive rather than the negative.

Like PTG said....if its meant to be....it will be.
There has to be enough "substance" relationship to make it worth waiting for...

Good luck :)

News / Is Poland experiencing the same economic problems as is USA? [30]

Not trying to make light of it but you've got to be tough. I live in Indy and I'll run some pasta down to the shelters tomorrow just for you. Seriously. No sarcasm.

Thank you for that!

Here is an article you might find surprising.......

From USA Today : New breed of American emerges in need of food

At food banks, demand is up 15% to 20% over last year. Pantries are serving "folks who get up and go to work every day," says Bill Bolling, founder of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. "That's remarkably different than the profile of who we've served through the years."

Here is another one: Charities having to do with less

News / Is Poland experiencing the same economic problems as is USA? [30]

It's a little tougher sure but not quite that dire.. perhaps the BBC likes to tell you these things?

It wasn't the BBC...I live in the US....It was a news piece I saw on the part of the state where I grew up. It was hard to watch. People who work, and work hard, but have no money for food after everything else is paid (rent, utilities, gas). The higher prices for gas and food have tightened their budgets to a breaking point.

Be thankful if you are not in this situation, but don't turn a blind eye to it.

News / Is Poland experiencing the same economic problems as is USA? [30]

People in the US are getting very very touchy (more so than ever before) about products in the US being imported from China and other countries, while on the other hand, fuel costs are causing everything to increase in cost as freight costs rise (most goods are transported in the US via truck, rail is second).

People are getting squeezed in every direction...food, gas, goods....and don't even mention health care over here! :(

People who were making it before are now looking for help....food banks in the US for the poor are at the lowest levels ever. Some days people don't eat...in supposedly what is the richest nation in the world.

USA, Canada / Who will be the best US President for Poland? [15]

I have a bad feeling that we (USA) are screwed in this election, no matter how it ends. How could any of these people be "good" for Poland? They haven't really said much about Europe....all the talk has been focused on what to do about Iraq.

:(

Love / My polish g/f can be a nightmare,is it always like this [262]

Listen to PGT....she's spot on.
You teach people how to treat you you. In that respect, what have you told your GF about how to treat you (what you will put up with and so on)?

I don't see her changing, and even if she did...what happens the next time she gets "stressed"? How much can you take?

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

I want a little Honda scooter. They sell for about 2,000.00 and get 118 miles to one gallon of gas. And they come in cute colors! ;)

Whhhheeee!

USA, Canada / Rationing food in some US-based stores [32]

I saw this on CNN a few days ago (Glen Beck's show).
They said that using grain for ethanol accounted for 1/3 of grain consumption due to Federal mandates....but that the amount of grain needed to fill up an SUV one time would feed a human for one year....they ridiculed the lack of logic there considering the world's need for food.

They reported that the shortage was being felt in terms of bulk quantities (the 25-50 lb. bag of flour or rice that you would find in a warehouse store, or if you ran a bakery or restaurant and need large quantities). They said this was due to the fall of the dollar, and other countries were buying our grain more cheaply than was possible before, so greater volume is being exported.

It will be interesting to see what other food items get exported if the dollar stays down or continues to fall. Then we might have a problem.

News / Why does Poland love the US? [144]

From what I have studied, it was WWI that made a profit for the US because of loans made to other countries.

WWII helped in other ways, like upgrading factories that got retooled for war production, and the workplace was changed by allowing women to do jobs that had been reserved for men. Plus we got a lot of great patents stolen from Germany after the war, and some scientists too.

I don't know how the US would have made money from WWII.....haven't heard that before.

Travel / Tips for travel with 1 year old needed [17]

Before you go...make little diaper change kits for the diaper bag.

Take a small zip loc bag, put in a diaper, and another zip loc bag with a few wipes (the really small ones used for "snacks" are the perfect size for the wipes).

That way you don't have to lug the diaper bag into the teeny weeny restroom/closet on the plane. All the used items can go back into the ziploc for disposal.

Take a variety of snacks (Cheerios, pretzels, animal crackers) and some juice boxes that don't need refrigeration. Even if you take toys.....face it, for a toddler it's more fun to stand on mom's lap and look around at all those faces.

Good luck with your trip! :)

News / Earth Hour - possible in Poland? [62]

Can't someone invent a better way of de-icing a car slightly more efficiently than by burning more petrol?

You can spray on stuff from a can .......its called HEET, but I kinda doubt if that's really good for the environment, too. I should look at the ingredients. I keep a can in the car for emergencies in winter.

News / Earth Hour - possible in Poland? [62]

I quite doubt that, SG, unless an alien spaceship took the picture and sent it to us somehow,

No...that's not what I mean. I meant more like an arial shot from a plane.....we had planes around the beginning of the century, but I don't know if there were any cameras at that light with the capabilities for shutter speed/film type for low light photography. Time exposure wouldn't work because of the movement of the plane.

But still, I think it is unnatural for the planet to be lit on its dark side all the time...
Flip it off, earth!

(I live in a dark sky community that purposely minimizes light pollution. People who visit here often comment on the star sky that we have....especially if they have always lived in a city)

Life / Polish Fireflies [23]

You put them in a jar and use them as a flashlight.

That's what we did as kids growing up in southern Tenn.
It was actually more fun to chase them, though :)
But we usually let them loose when we had to go inside for the night. :)

Once though, my little sister put some frogs in one of those toy purses that snap shut....and forgot it for a few days. Ewwwww!

News / Earth Hour - possible in Poland? [62]

I think its time to communicate other ideas to people about what helps....
turning off lights is fairly well known.

For example some folks may not know that leaving appliances plugged in while not used, still pull energy (toasters, cell phone chargers, etc.). Apparently its also safer to unplug unused appliances as well as saving energy.

I would like to see more education/awareness on issues like that. :)

18 million tons of CO2 sounds like a lot......

News / Earth Hour - possible in Poland? [62]

I think it serves the purpose (as posted) to raise awareness...to get people's attention.

I was thinking about all the photos I have seen of aerial views of various countries at night.....all those little dots of light clustered in cities like masses of stars.

I wonder if there is a comparison photo somewhere taken of the Earth at night.... say circa 1900 and one circa 2000?

Do we really need to light the whole planet every night? I mean...doesn't that seem a little 'odd'?

News / China to buy 150 helicopters from Poland [47]

Di you read this today Crow?
Speak out against the government in China and you go to jail...
Or was that Russia? Or Both?

"the charges against Hu Jia centred on six articles he wrote and two interviews given to radio stations."

"State prosecutors were mainly concerned with Hu's criticisms of the government, its exercise of official power and the political system, he said. "Although the criticisms are harsh, we don't believe it should be counted as subversion of state power," Li said. The court might announce the verdict next week and Hu, 34, could face a prison sentence of up to five years if he is found guilty, he said."

News / China to buy 150 helicopters from Poland [47]

No, I think you will find that lots of people are well aware of where most things are produced,

I agree because many Americans in my shop pick things up and look for a sticker on the bottom/on the packaging to see where it was made. They do this because they are looking for domestic products.

The problem is that the domestic product can be more more expensive, for example a coffee cup made in China or Taiwan will sell for $5.00 or so, but one made in the US will start at about 8 or 9 dollars. But if you wash the US made coffee cup in the dishwasher it will come out looking like it did when it went in, and isn't as likely to test positive for lead!

Last year, in my store we had a recall on costume jewelry because it arrived with stickers "made in China" and "may contain lead". How idiotic!

There was recently an email going around regarding rubber sandals being sold at Wal-Mart that were made in China and causing lesions on the area of the feet that came into contact with the rubber straps. The email was warning others not to purchase any China-made sandals. I would attach the pics here, but they are very disgusting to see.

So yeah, people DO CARE where things are made!
