Food / Vegetarian food in Poland? [83]

zaffyw,

If you visit Wrocław you will be about 200 miles in the wrong direction. I think that you'll cross the border and pass Poznan rather than Wrocław.

But if you are coming here, send a post and I'll let you know.

Law / What are the current market gaps in Polish business? [18]

Sernik,

Forget language schools. There are already far too many.

A sign of wealth is the number of pubs and restaurants. We have loads but you could open another.

A top quality travel service would go down well.

You might find a market in fashion.

We are short of shops selling musical instruments.

And I want a cut of the action before I give you more.

Real Estate / Apartment purchase in Poland [226]

Frank,

We do have estate agents here. Not quite the same as the UK but they are here.

Do you want some addresses ?

Also, I'm on the north side of the river. Unless you go into the suburbs you will only get a flat, if you want to be within five or ten minutes of the centre. Please bare in mind that a lot of apartments are for first time buyers and are therefore small by some standards.

I don't know if you are familiar with this: Property here is described by the square metre and not by the number of bedrooms [English style] A big flat in the city area would be about 150 sq metres

I'll look in the paper tomorrow and give you an update for the Wroclaw area.

All house sales go through a notary. If they don't then something is wrong.

Language / Television to learn Polish/English. What should I be watching? [33]

Sudheer,

Some of those are German so you won't be able to change anything.
But, if you have Bloomberg it might be the English version and Deutsche Welle has an English version. Polonia 1 has English subtitles [I think.] Zone Europe, try to change language on the decoder remote control.

Sometimes it's hit and miss. I've found good Arabic movies with English subtitles. At other times nothing.

Not much help am I. Sorry.

Language / Television to learn Polish/English. What should I be watching? [33]

Sudheer,

Please tell me what system you have. Is it satellite: Canal +, Polsat. Or terrestrial. Or do you have cable.

The Canal + package has programmes in English. You just hit a button on the remote.

Polsat has some programmes in English. But I never watch it, so I can't help you much with that.

I think we need input from other posters on this subject. There are Polish programmes with English subtitles and English programmes with Polish sutitles. It's just a matter of finding them.

Life / Whats driving like in Poland? [70]

Forget the stereotype.

Polish drivers used to drive around in little Fiats. They were easy to repair and inexpensive. With cheap cars on bad roads no-one cared.

Now we have good roads and car owners drive expensive cars.

Result : Polish drivers these days care about their cars and are [quite] careful drivers.

There is a problem with sign-posts, which has become a bit of a joke here. Make sure that you have a map with you, if you don't know the road.

Don't try and bribe the Police. They get more smartie points for collecting fines. Plus if you are speeding they may have you on camera. If you are unlucky any fine will be about 200zł

I don't think it's really going to happen though. You'll be OK.

If there is a radar trap further down the road, on-coming traffic will flash their headlights at you, just to let you know.

Not so many motorways here. The roads are like A and B roads in UK.

The Police will enjoy giving you an on the spot fine if they can find a reason to do so.

Some cobbled streets here. That's because they are hard wearing, not old fashioned.

You might need winter tyres [in winter]

Petrol stations are the same as in the UK.

More people die on the roads here on November 1st than any other day. [This is not a joke]

The temperature is dropping here so you might get black ice in three or four weeks.

News / Polish government punishes charitable givers [25]

The problem the homeless have when applying for work is that they need an address.
Although it must be said that you can lie and make one up.
Another problem is that the longer someone lives on the streets the more chance he becomes alcohol or drug dependent. Not the best job qualifications.

lef. I have no problem with showing kindness. It's just that [in London] it's kindness from people who don't understand the homeless situation. There are too many hand-outs, which make it easy for the homeless to do nothing. They just sit and wait for everything to come to them. And it does.

Also, there are numbers of homeless who do casual labour, washing dishes in hotels etc. They earn a little cash, remain on the streets and convince themselves that they are happy.

Understanding who is living on the streets and why they are there is most important.

For everyone. Here is a true story.
A London business man lost his wallet and couldn't get home to his house in the suburbs.
He went up to some homeless beggars at Victoria train station and asked them for the fare home. They laughed at him then lent him the money, which he paid back the following day.

The point here is that you don't need to work if people are stupid enough to give you money. I've heard about young homeless making 20, 30 even fifty pounds a day.

As I said in post #8 I've worked with these people. I knew the people who lent the business man the money.

News / Polish government punishes charitable givers [25]

I have worked with the homeless in London. Once they learn the ropes it becomes easy for them. Free food, blankets, doctors, social workers, a place to go for a shower and more. There is little incentive to work. Even when placed in a flat or house and given the chance of work a small number still go for handouts. And then move back onto the streets because it's easier.

There was one time when a group of homeless were lining up for food and three different organizations were trying to feed them at the same time: hot soup and salmon sarnies.

I could go on.
opts is right on this.
