Travel / New Year Celebration in Warszawa [12]

You must just make sure guys and girls that you book in advance. Last year, I called round and round to find a restaurant that would even be OPEN on New Year's Eve. We could only find two in the vicinity of the old town that were open, and the restaurant where we booked, we filled the last table - two weeks in advance. By the time, we just arrived in Poland from SA, and it was the strangest thing for us that restaurants were closed on New Year's Eve.

Is lamb big in Poland?

Nie Osioł, niestety, nigdy nie! :(

No matter what they say.

If you want to have lamb - go have it in SA :)

Life / Where to buy Marmite in Warsaw? [35]

Glasgow is where I spend most of my time. No idea where you got SA from.

Sorry about that. Someone else was on here the other day, coming from SA and moving to Warsaw in a couple of months.

Anyway, now you know where you can find (British) Marmite.

Life / Where to buy Marmite in Warsaw? [35]

You can buy Marmite and Bovril at Kuchnie Świata (Kitchens of the World). There are a number of branches all over Warsaw - the biggest in Arkadia Centrum).

However, except for the fact that it's very expensive (about 17.00 PLN = R46.00 for a small bottle), there is a difference in taste between the English products available in Europe, and the one's we get in SA. Don't ask me why or how it works - it just does. Hubby and I are bovril fans, and we always bring with when we go for a visit - it lasts very long in a coolish cupboard.

Good luck ;)

Language / can / be able to vs may / be allowed to [19]

Kinda tongue in cheek expression, since the diminutive and affectionate "daruś" is gently cancelled by "pan".

At least I got the tongue in cheek feeling through to you - no matter how crooked!

You have helped with almost all my langauge questions so far, therefore you have become an 'old friend' (the informal part)

You are 'the teacher' (formal part) - so yes - it was meant tongue in cheek.

I'll absorb the rest of your teaching slowly so that wolono mi pamiętać następny ras.

Następny ras is without doubt not correct, but anyway ;)

Language / can / be able to vs may / be allowed to [19]

Some help please.
I know can / be able to = móc. (In English, this is about your physical ability to go to the party - yes you can)

Do you also use móc for may / be allowed to, or is there another word. (In English, this is about whether your parents allow you to go - no, you may not)

I know that this is in a strict sense, and that the two words in english are sometimes used as synonyms, although it's not entirely correct.

Life / Polish Driving Licence. [314]

Hey Bushman

Sorry, but you'll have no luck, unless you are willing to hand in your SA licence. I was not willing to do that, because when we go to South Africa on holiday, I need my licence there. They were then not willing to give me a Polish licence, so I drive with a South African international licence that I got from the AA. Depending on which countries you travel in, the period of validity for the licences vary.

Good luck.

Language / How do people mispronounce your Polish names? [60]

In Afrikaans

"w"

Sometimes like English na przykład

twee: two - Crooked polish fonetics: tłiy with i and y flowing into each other, almost like ej in Polish becomes one sound.

Sometimes like Polish na przykład

weet: know - Crooked polish fonetics: wiyt

This is nothing official - just my humble attempt - so please.

I'm sure a dutch person might be able to give a dutch example, but I am not clued up enough to think up one myself. There was a dutchman here a day or so ago. I'll check my threads.

"ij" makes the sound

"ej" in dutch

In Afrikaans, it became "ei" or "y" - the "y" being an eventual combination of the "ij" written cursively :)
