They were not spreading Islam, their power was waning due to:
- Janissaries revolts that started 1603 and following peasants and ethnic minorities revolts
- corruption of local lords
Successive sultans have chosen war - to take Janissaries out of cities and to unite corrupted landlords. It was a very short sighted policy, because war cost much more than eventual loot. It led to bankruptcy and anarchy. And that was the situation in Ottoman empire when Mehmed IV made his march to Austria. King Sobieski knew that, that's why he attacked.

As I said Hungary didn't have a problem with religion and was seeking for help to free itself from Habsburg's reign. There was no "Islam" spreading. Beside in that time Janissaries revolted against Islamic syncrasies such as celibacy and casernement.

It's all about politics, farseeing and predicting. Poland knew that Ottoman empire was feeble that time - they wouldn't have attacked it otherwise. Politics are not about gifts and pleasentries. Russia was already a strong enemy for Poland in that times and defeating turks untied Russias hands.

Beside one of the reasons to attack Ottoman was presumed danger for christianity in Europe which was dogs bollocks - hungarians were fighting along Ottomans and this alliance somehow didn't hinder catholicism and calvinism in Hungary.

That's a popular Polish myth, Ottoman Empire/ Turks was in a really bad political shape when it started its warring march towards Austria. The "victory" was actually one of the nails to Polands coffin - saved Austria took Hungary into possesion and strenghtened that way 90 years later participated in parition of Poland. It wasn't a victory bad a really big mistake of King Sobieski.

Depends on what the ring was made of, they can resize certain materials by applying different temperatures.. but usually only one size up or down this way. Otherwise they need to exchange the whole ring which may take more time - and if the ring has bigger stones ( engagement rings usually don't have these ) extending the size can crumble these stones off..

Poland ain't a really good place for skiing if you are used to skiing conditions in Alps. It's much better in Slovakia.. just over the border. I've been in Korbielow and Szczyrk which beside Zakopane are ones of the biggest resorts around ( and much cheaper than Zakopane ) - usually overcrowded with lots of mud, ice and pebbles covering the slopes because snow cannons can't keep up with amounts of people pushing the snow down...

You're wrong, you can get a 100zlotys fine for drinking on a train and it doesn't matter whether you are completely silent or not. I've seen it few time and got fined myself for drinking a beer on train by train guards.

I'm all for drinking in a cultured, responsible manner on trains, not for getting plastered, making a ruckus and annoying fellow passangers..

Drinking of alcohol is strictly illegal on trains in Poland. There was one thread about it already. In some trains there's a special diner cart called "Wars", you can drink alohol in it if you buy there at the counter.

There are so many shelter houses in Polish mountains it'd be hard for somebody to take one over another one. I'm pretty sure it's all about personal preferences, different people can tell you different things just because they've spent more time in that one favourite place. The best way is to hike from one "schronisko" to another one with a backpack, most "schronisko" hosts I've met were nice and always gave me proper directions for example if I'll make it to another "schronisko" before the night. Have fun!

Oh and if you want to go more off the beaten track avoid Zakopane and its surroundings - lots of tourists, although probably much fewer than in the summer period.

You'll be fine, you can buy a chit-chat phrasebook, beside you're probably gonna shop in a some sort of a shopping centre so you'll just put everything you need into the basket and pay for it a the register, no communication involved
