Life / Polish Hospitality at Christmas Time [10]

I'm sorry to hear this. For me it is a test of the Christmas spirit to allow a stranger through the door on Christmas Eve.

Have you thought about booking into a hotel. I know that in the mountains some hotels have a special Christmas Eve meal for guests. It might not be too late.

Travel / Goth Shops in Cracow.. [9]

Rammstein T-shirt. Cost 40zl. Printed front and back.
They seem to last.
If it's metal you can buy the shirt. I was actually after a Die Toten Hosen shirt but they didn't have any. So I guess it's strictly metal or similar.

The best place to buy CD's DVD's is Media Markt. Various prices, it depends what you buy. I don't like expensive, so that's where I go.

Travel / Goth Shops in Cracow.. [9]

Lots of Metal, very few real Goths here in Wroclaw.
I've just come back from the [metal] T-shirt and music shop. Any colour shirt you want, so long as it's black. I think most Goths dress for Metal and listen to their band of choice.

Life / What's the weather like in Poland? [81]

According to one weather report: Snow coming in from the east. Snow in the mountains.

It has been trying to snow all day here, but it just comes down as drizzle.

I see a wet Christmas for us.

Life / Polish Girl Fashion - "less is more"? [108]

manser,

I doubt that you'll see many Polish girls in skirts. At least not through the Winter months.

Also, it's not just girls who wear combat trousers/combat style trousers. Many young men and some older men wear them too.

At the moment some young folk are wearing jackets and trousers which have a camouflage pattern, for example, on the front but not the back of whatever it is they are wearing.

There is also a mania for checked shirts. A lot of men are wearing them.

Life / Polish Girl Fashion - "less is more"? [108]

Stupidwelsh,

Once again you try to be smart, but can't pull it off.

Teenagers here wear camouflarge clothing as it's part of the fashion here.

I doubt very much that Amathyst was refering to soldiers. If she had of been she probably would have said something to that affect.

"not sure about this whole camouflage thang thats going on."

It might have something to do with National Service

It's teenage fashion.

Genealogy / The name of Malenka [9]

Maleńka would be 'little one'

Did you leave anyone behind ? Yes, Maleńka [my little sister]

Maleńka/Malanka has been used instead of a real name.

I could be wrong though.

Life / Dogs in Poland - why do we keep them? [28]

I must be of very low social status because I have two dogs.

Thanks for putting me in my place, Anja.

And if I didn't treat them with respect what would be the point in paying for their food, or indeed keeping them at all.

Life / How many people really know English in Poland? [53]

Babylon,

As there are more older people than younger in Poland I don't trust your figure.

However, among the under 30's it's probably true. But some speak better than others.

Life / on the Feast of Stephen [7]

I have my Name Day on the 26th

Family tradition dictates that I spend this day in the kitchen, with a bottle of brandy, cooking the English version of Christmas dinner.

Polish Christmas first then an English one [a day late]

Life / Polish Girl Fashion - "less is more"? [108]

To the original question.

It depends what time of year you come to Poland and if you are judging women in their out-door clothing. In the depths of winter we are all wrapped up. So it is difficult for anyone, of either sex, to look their absolute best.

The exceptions would be the New Year's Eve Ball and the High School Ball [Studniowka]
This is when either sex shine.
In Summer Polish people only have to look out the window to get a tan. And that always makes people look good. Coupled with the latest fashion I can see no reason for complaint about Polish women.

The facts here are not much different to those in any other country. It must be me....I just don't see ugly people anywhere. :)

Love / I fear to lose my polish boyfriend.. [44]

Kitten,

Please, start thinking. It won't be pleasant when the Police take you home and possibly arrest your boyfriend.
It will all be for nothing.

Grow up, Now. You are dreaming.

Love / I fear to lose my polish boyfriend.. [44]

kitten,

Maybe I'm too old. I don't know how to help you. But please listen to the younger members of this forum.

At the same time understand this. When my daughters reach sixteen there is no way that I will allow them to do what you are thinking of doing. I love them too much for them to ruin their lives at such a young age.

Life / Polish Driving Licence. [314]

To get a driving licence in Poland you have to sit a test in two parts. First is theory which has questions with multiple answers. In other words A could be correct or A and B could be correct. I can't remember how many questions there are. It is possible to get an English / Polish translator for this. You can get two questions wrong. Most people practice this test on a CD course. After passing the theory you have up to six months to pass the practical exam.

USA, Canada / Polish Dog Trainer from Chicago area / Dog Lessons [37]

Krysia,

Your last point. I trained my dog in English. The family speak to her in Polish. It works.

Useless information time. The Americans helped to save the Owczarek Podhalanski during WWII.

Grzegorz,

You're correct.

Kitten,

You are going about things in the wrong way. Please stop and think about your life and what you are saying and doing.

If you are going to join the adult world, start acting like an adult.

Slavery pre-dates history.

Or are you talking about the Spanish.

What you say is interesting. There is a thread somewhere in which posters talk about dog food and how it affects the dog.

Also, big well known breeds do seem to be quite cheap. Small exotic dogs are more expensive.

Language / Audio cd for a Pole to learn English? [12]

Many text books for learning English come with a CD. You can buy them in Poland, USA, anywhere.

Some of your friends might have them.

Or is it for a present ?

Don't be daft.

My dog works to hand signals, which are the same in any language.

And if it works with an owczarek podhalanski it will work with any other dog.

Besides it's not what you say it is how you say it. Dogs rely on tone not words.

Why don't you train the dog yourself. That way you will build up an understanding between you and it.

Are you sure that you are suited to looking after a dog ?

It's in two parts. Theory then practical. But not on the same day.
