UK, Ireland / British celebs that are bigger in Poland than in Britain [49]

WTF?

Never heard of Mr Pitkin?

If you fancy a good laugh, read One-Hit Wonderland by Tony Hawks - this guy is on a mission to have a no. 1 chart hit and ends up teaming up with Norman Wisdom in Albania.

UK, Ireland / British celebs that are bigger in Poland than in Britain [49]

Are there any British artists, musicians or actors who are more popular in Poland than they are in their home country, or spend a lot of time there?

In the same way that Depeche Mode is much bigger in Germany, the Nolans in Japan and Norman Wisdom in Albania.

I know that Nigel Kennedy spends a lot of time in Krakow - but are there any others?

News / Important Dates in the Polish Calendar [25]

I made the mistake of taking some comedy Halloween cakes to my Polish colleagues. They responded by telling me about 1 November and what they do on it. Talk about foot in mouth :(

News / World's Next Great Cities - Forbes. Warsaw 8. [22]

I am surprised to see no Krakow.

But Krakow isn't a major finance centre. The survey looked at financial services and things like investor protection, derivatives trading etc.

Language / My Learning Polish Woes... [64]

Am still chuckling over that one.

Reminds me of the time in my A-level Garman class. My mate got a bit mixed up using the German-English dictionary... she got a bit mixed up with the word "After" :D

Travel / Night Travel Warsaw-Prague [5]

Find out all you need to know about trains here....

seat61.com

On my first trip to Poland, I left by taking the night train to Budapest. It was fine - not at all dodgy. Slept in a bunk with three grannies. All good fun.

Travel / New Year's in Krakow [22]

I celerated New Year in Krakow a couple of years ago. Mr LC and I went out to find some hip and cool parties. Instead, we ended up in a very quiet restaurant, went out and and stood with the crowds at midnight, and ended up having a few beers in Bull pub.

It was only when we got back to the Holiday Inn where (we were staying) that we discovered a pretty lively party happening... so we gatecrashed.

UK, Ireland / My friends upset at Brits.... [51]

proper gander.

Love it!!

Arctic Paul - does your mate realise that these Brits are kind of like the sub-human variant, and that some of us are actually quite lovely?

Language / My Learning Polish Woes... [64]

Gah.... the woes continue...

I studied Russian waaaay back, at least 15 byears ago. Last time I used it was about 3 or 4 years ago. It's been resigned to the back of my memory, along with the Macarena.

So now I'm getting stuck into Polish. No matter how much attention I give it - plus the fact that I am surrounded by so many Polish sounds, whenever I try to speak, the Russian just comes out :(

Travel / About my Holiday in Krakow - the wonderful hospitality in Poland [8]

Awww, that's a nice report.

please try to get many more tourists to come and visit your beautiful country.

On one hand, I'm inclined to agree with you, but then again, I'd hate to see some of my favourite places fill up with the wrong kind of Brits if you know what I mean, LOL!

Work / Is there jobs for a beauty therapist in Poland? [28]

I have university yet to go through.

Studying what? If you know that beauty therapy is your vocation, surely there are more relevant qualifications that you can study.

I know a hairdresser who knew what he wanted to do from a v. early age. He had his own salon by 22 and through his combination of skill, talent, personality, business accumen and sheer hard work is now very successful... and I can no longer get an appointment with him without booking 6 months in advance :(

News / The most useless things in Poland [140]

That's what I figured. I'd not seen these doors in Russia or anywhere else in Central / Eastern Europe that I've visited.

Funny the quirky things that you notice...

News / The most useless things in Poland [140]

OK, not so much useless, but fascinating.... padded leather doors. What's with them in Poland?

I've travelled quite a fair bit, and have only ever seen them in Poland... heavy doors - usually in older style office buildings - with a leather padded / studded panel. Anybody know what I'm on about?

Work / Is there jobs for a beauty therapist in Poland? [28]

Um... try not to sound too flippant about it. Really, do your research. Work in a salon there for a while to build up your experience and contacts etc.

Have you ever even been to Poland?

Love / POLISH GIRLS AND LOOSE JEANS [36]

I'm with everyone else here - skinny jeans are everywhere you look in Poland.

Time for a baggy revival though, given the way that fashion works in cycles...

Love / Plastic boobs in Poland [44]

Funnily enough, in Poland you can get a face-lift type procedure where thin gold threads are inserted into the skin, like some kind of internal scaffolding. Have oly ever seen this in Poland.

UK, Ireland / Year Long Polish Festival... London [11]

How is Szczecin these days?

Cold and dark.

Actually, I only just got here, so have still to get my bearings. Without giving away too much info to any potential stalkers, I enjoyed Cafe 22 earlier today :)

Life / What are your favourite Polish Radio stations...? [27]

If you want to listen to some Polish music try and get a hold of this CD I talk about in This Thread. I bought it for a Polish friend and then I bought a copy for myself. :)

Fab - I'm off to Poland later in the week. Hoping to squeeze in some time to go shopping :)
